Chapter 106: Make A Choice
Adeline quickly collapsed on the bed. She closed her eyes, wishing for the voice to go away.
After nightfall, Dimitri secretly snuck out and went back to the intelligence guild. He intended to get the information he asked for.
He did not want to disturb anyone or arouse anyone’s attention so he went by himself. He hadn’t told anyone yet but he realised that he could levitate, he was able to master the element to such an extent that he could fly.
Using this to his advantage, he flew towards the intelligence guild, there were barely any people around, and most of the shops were closing.
As he stepped into the guild he was ushered into the room, he didn’t have to verify his identity again.
"Everything you asked for is in here," The man said. "But remember, the Mage Tower is not an ordinary place. Those who enter rarely return, and those who fail... Well, they do not live to tell the tale."
The man tossed the file on the desk for him to take. Dimitri was nervous, the Mage Tower had always been a secretive organisation, and no one really knew what was happening on the inside.
As the man said, those who successfully made it into the tower would never reveal its secrets, while those who fail... Were probably ripped apart by the monsters that surrounded the tower.
When he looked over the documents, he found out more information than he expected.
The Mage Tower was an independent organisation that was dedicated to research and invention of new magic tools, inventions, and techniques. Their objective isn’t power, they pursue magic solely because of their passion for it.
They like to explore ancient ruins and understand the powers the ancients used to wield. Many scrolls and techniques have been preserved this way. Countless civilisations have fallen, each holding its own secrets.
As such, most of the mages that join the tower are misfits or people with eccentricities.
The Mage Tower is divided into two. The Upper echelon and the lower echelon. Those who are here just to learn magic and leave to find their own path join the lower echelon. It was almost like a school.
While the upper echelon is accessed by only those who would dedicate their life to the Mage Tower. A spell is cast to bind them to the tower, and if they betray the Mage Tower, they will face instant death. Betrayal is not taken lightly.
Dimitri sighed to himself... If he joined the lower echelon, he could return to the West but he was not so sure that position would be of any use to Adeline. There are thousands of students who graduate from the Mage’s Tower.
Maybe they have more refined techniques than other mages who learnt locally, but in terms of status, they are the same.
He wished he knew more about the Upper Echelon, but given how exclusive it was, he was sure that he would not be able to find anything about it.
If he wanted power, he would need to aim for the Upper Echelon, and that would mean that his loyalty would be tied to the Tower. He couldn’t pledge his loyalty to Adeline... He didn’t even know if he could leave the Tower!
He was not sure about what to do next. What would be the best course of action? Become a powerful figure and lend her his name and influence, or stay by her side and protect her personally?
He always wanted to be a knight... But what she needed more was a powerful backing. He sighed as he decided resolutely what he would do.
He will join the Upper Echelon and make a name for himself... Once he does, she could use his status to pressure the Holy Temple, could she not?
With a sombre expression, he left the intelligence guild... This might be their last adventure together... After this, he will be off to the Mage Tower.

Everett did not get an ounce of sleep. He kept pacing his room thinking about what Adeline had revealed to him. After she left, it took him some time to compose himself.
And immediately after that he found himself running towards his father’s study... He- he wanted to ask him one more time about his mother. He wanted to know if his father would tell him anything...
Just anything... Any morsel of information would be enough for him to regain his trust in him. If what she said was true... His father was a monster, a monster he intended to kill himself.
His fists were clenched, bringing them slowly up he knocked on the door to his father’s study.
A cold voice rang from the inside, asking him to come in. He sounded restless and impatient.
"What is it?" Frustration seeped from his voice. He was there when that tree almost fell on those kids. No, he didn’t plan it. But he wished it crippled the boy. He couldn’t believe he was jealous of a young boy’s abilities.
The way he sent a heavy tree like that flying... Such power at such a young age. Damn it! Why couldn’t he inherit any powers? He specifically sought out a woman who had powers...
That woman... She had earth powers... They were weak but it was better than nothing. If she was stronger... Hah, if she was stronger why would she have seemed to have an affair with a married man? His eyes narrowed.
Everett laughed in defeat... This man... He didn’t care about him in the slightest. He was just a pawn to him, a means to get ahold of the Duchy.
"I want to know where my mother is," Everett said with resolute eyes. He had been burying his feelings for far too long. After hearing what Adeline said, he couldn’t hide it any longer. He wanted answers, he demanded answers!
The Duke scoffed, he threw the pen he was holding onto the table and crossed his arms, with the same mocking tone, he replied, "Again with this nonsense. I already told you to stop worrying about the woman who abandoned you. Are you that weak or am I not enough?"
Was he seriously asking that question? A father who dropped him in an orphanage, a father who only communicated with him through the letter... A father who was lying to him with no remorse...
"I said, tell me about my mother." Everett’s voice dropped, and his eyes turned cold. Every time his father deflected it was only confirming his suspicions.
The Duke was losing patience as well, he already told him multiple times to stop asking, but this child didn’t listen, "I do not know where your mother is. Who knows? Maybe she ran off with another man after taking the money. Through me, you can live a good life, don’t forget that. Now, get out."
Everett got his answer... It didn’t matter if his mother was alive or not, nor did it matter if she ran away with money... His father was unreliable and cruel, he would rather die than be loyal to such a man.
He recalled Adeline’s offer... Time to make a choice.
