Chapter 104: Be A Villainess

Chapter 104: Be A Villainess

He thought over some things, the Duke was targeting him, not Adeline. He wouldn’t dare to touch her, she was the daughter of the Marquess of course.

He should put some distance between them, if he was in danger he knew he could protect himself, but he couldn’t say for certain he could protect her. He was not that strong enough yet.

"I think you should stop being near me. It would be for the best." He proposed solemnly.

"What?!" She couldn’t believe what she was hearing.

His eyes softened, but his tone remained firm. "Their target is me, Adeline. They won’t be going out of their way to hurt you. The reason I came with you was to keep you safe. And that is exactly what I plan on doing."

Adeline’s heart twisted as she took in his words. "So your idea of keeping me safe is to... Leave me?" She shook her head, a fire igniting in her eyes. "No, Dimitri. You’re wrong."

"Adeline, you don’t understand," he replied, the frustration in his voice was clear. "I’m not strong enough yet. If I found myself in danger... I know how to protect myself. But if something were to happen to you because of me..." He clenched his fists, clearly grappling with the thought. "I wouldn’t be able to live with that."

Adeline couldn’t understand why he was saying this. The reason he was in danger was because of her! She wouldn’t be able to live with herself if something happened to him either.

"No, if you were to find yourself in danger, it would be my fault. You got wrapped in my schemes. It’s my job to ensure your safety."

Dimitri took issue with this. His jaw clenched. He wasn’t used to this kind of pushback from her, and a part of him felt a pang of frustration. "Adeline, you’re not listening. I am your knight. I promised your father I would protect you," he said, his voice firm with a sense of duty.

Adeline glared at him and grabbed him by the collar to meet her eye level, "Listen to me well, I don’t want you to be my knight. I want you to be my friend." She pushed him away and turned to leave. She didn’t plan to give him room to refuse.

Dimitri’s eyes widened in surprise, taken aback by her intensity.

He was slightly hurt by her comment, she didn’t want him to be her knight? They were already friends, were they not? He looked down and kicked some rocks in frustration.

He wasn’t frustrated at her, he was frustrated that he wasn’t strong enough.

Adeline was raging as she returned to her room. Just what was that kid talking about?! Fear, no, she was angry.

She was done with being passive, with waiting for things to happen around her. If the Duke thought she would just sit by while he plotted, he was dead wrong.

She wouldn’t give him a moment’s peace. She wanted to act first and not give him any time to plot. She wanted to keep him on his toes.

If anyone was going to fear for their safety, it wouldn’t be her or Dimitri. It would be the Duke himself.

Filled with determination, Adeline decided it was time to make her first move. She knew that if she wanted to shake things up, she would need to start with Everett. If she could plant the seeds of doubt in him, she might just unravel the Duke’s carefully laid plans.

She sent out her butterflies to find him, they flew through the estate as they searched for Everett. Soon, she spotted him, sitting alone in the library, his nose buried in a book.

Adeline had half-expected to find him with his father, perhaps plotting some scheme to secure his position, but it seems that the Duke didn’t trust his son enough to involve him.

She slowly made her way to the library, her presence was unmissable. She made some noise on purpose, plus her pink hair would always attract people.

He quickly looked at her, doubt filled his mind. His eyes widened, then quickly darted back down, as if he hadn’t seen her.

He couldn’t help but wonder why she was here. Was she seeking him out? Was she here to taunt him? Dimitri was declared the heir after all... She won.

That Dimitri... He had Adeline’s support and the Duchess’ support. What did he have? His pathetic father... Such a coward. He was planning on using underhanded methods to get what he wanted.

This just showed him how powerless he was.

He was just a pawn in his father’s game, with no real power of his own.

At least the Duchess hadn’t kicked him out, but she hadn’t acknowledged him either. The only person with real power in this house was her.

If he wanted to stay here, he would have to align himself with her. He would have to beg for her favour and become a part of her faction if he wanted to survive.

That was the only way he could remain in this household.

She noticed how his gaze flickered to her now and then, though he pretended to be lost in his book. Her smirk deepened. She wasn’t in a rush. She simply watched him, pretending to browse through a few books, letting him stew in his thoughts.

She looked out the window to see the Sun slowly setting. With two books in her hand, she made her way to the table where Everett sat.

She placed the books down with a loud bang, knowing the sound would grab his attention. She smiled wickedly as she turned to face him, resting her chin on her hand, and watching him closely. Her gaze was intense, her eyes never leaving his.

Everett looked her up and down, a mixture of annoyance and curiosity flickering in his eyes before he finally spoke. "What do you want?" He could tell that she was approaching him with ulterior motives.

Adeline smiled, her lips curling slightly. "See, that’s what I always liked about you. You’re smart," she said, her voice dripping with approval. She straightened up, sitting tall, her confidence practically radiating off of her.

Everett scoffed, he didn’t hide his disdain, "That didn’t answer my question. Why are you here?" He reiterated.

She leaned back, sighing dramatically. "Oh, I was just browsing the library... And then I thought, why not have a chat with you?" She shrugged. Her gaze never left him.

Everett’s jaw tightened. "You and I have nothing to discuss." He got up, preparing to leave when Adeline spoke.

"Oh, but that’s where you’re wrong," she said, her tone playful yet chilling. "I think you’ll find what I have to say... interesting." She leaned in closer, lowering her voice. "Tell me, Everett, do you know much about your mother?"

He stopped immediately, and turned to look at her with a weird expression, "Why did you bring her up?" He walked dangerously close to her.

Adeline stood her ground, and looked straight at him with unwavering eyes. She was going to implement her plan and nothing will stop her.

In the game between the Duke and her, she was certain she would be the ultimate winner.
