Chapter 102: Class Dismissed!

"Damn it!" She muttered to herself.

The Duchess, with her strict standards and an ironclad rulebook on noble conduct, had made it clear that Adeline’s education in nobility was a top priority. Adeline groaned, dreading the morning ahead.

This was not the plan! I repeat this was not the plan! She had seen with her own two eyes how scary the Duchess was. She commanded the room. And she would not give anyone a chance to refuse her!

Her words were the law. Adeline cried invisible tears, she was going to get hit, wasn’t she?

As soon as dawn broke, the maids rushed into her room to wake her up. She was still very sleepy and didn’t understand what was happening.

The room was bustling with enthusiastic maids, birds were chirping outside. The maids drew the curtains which flooded the room with light.

"The classes will be starting soon, Miss, no time to waste!" They tried to usher her into the bathroom to get her ready. But the child groaned, she didn’t want to wake up at all!

Adeline squinted, feeling every bit of her exhaustion. "It’s so early..." She mumbled, but the maids were relentless. They did not want to face the wrath of the Duchess either!

Adeline groaned as she got up. She never woke up this early before! She knew she came to the Eastern Duchy under the ruse of etiquette class but she didn’t think she would actually have to go through with it.

They guided her into the washroom, brushing and dressing her with practised efficiency.

Before she knew it she found herself in a spare room decorated like a classroom. The Duchess intended to do this the right way. She stepped in looking prim and proper, she didn’t like tired at all, unlike Adeline.

Adeline narrowed her eyes, maybe she should use holy powers on herself to get energised. But was this like tickling? When you tickle yourself you don’t feel... Ticklish, can she heal herself with her own powers? Only one way to find out.

"Good Morning, Adeline." She smiled. The smile didn’t reach her eyes though, they were stern as ever. Her eyes narrowed in on the sleepy child in front of her, "Pleased to see you up and ready for today’s class."

It’s not like I had a choice! Adeline thought to herself.

If she wasn’t so sleepy, she would’ve picked up on the sarcasm.

She let out a tired sigh and listened as the Duchess went on and on about the nobility, the titles, what they were responsible for, how to address various people and so on.

Adeline had her eyes peeled open... Forcefully, otherwise, she was sure that she would have fallen asleep. She had a fake smile plastered on her face. Maybe if she had a good night’s sleep she would have paid attention!

But now every second was a struggle to stay awake. She was so close to falling asleep when her stomach grumbled. All she had was a glass of milk, and now hours passed by. She was hungry.

The Duchess paused, shook her head and put down the material she had prepared.

"Very well. Let’s head to the dining hall, breakfast should be ready." She relented.

Adeline could almost cry. Finally! Food! She hopped down with much enthusiasm, the sleepiness that had a hold on her was gone. She desperately wanted some food. She practically skipped down the hall toward the dining room.

Warm, fresh bread with melted butter and jam... Ah... So wonderful.

Seated at the table, she waited eagerly as her meal was served. But just as she lifted her fork, the Duchess’s hand caught her wrist.

Her smile quickly vanished and she looked at the Duchess nervously with an awkward smile on her face.

The Duchess smiled back at her but it was very cold. "Start with the napkin, Adeline." She pointed at the napkin which was neatly folded and placed aside.

Adeline sighed deeply and slouched as she spread the napkin across her lap.

"Don’t slouch." Her voice immediately rang, she gave Adeline no chance to relax.

"Okay!" She sobbed and sat upright. Her back was hurting but she was more afraid of this lady!

Seeing that the Duchess hadn’t said anything, she was prepared to take a bite when that evil lady caught her hand again!

Please! I just want some food! She cried!

"You mustn’t eat until the host takes their first bite, this symbolises the beginning of the feast. That is proper etiquette."

Adeline watched the Duchess have the first bite with wide eyes. Those eyes contained fury... An unhinged amount of fury!

She was finally allowed to have breakfast! She wanted to stuff her face but the Duchess was ready to restrain her if she acted unladylike. Suppressing the urge to shove as much as she could into her mouth... She took small bites.

Carefully cutting everything... Even a grape!

This is bullshit!

She never knew that eating breakfast could be so taxing. She was so out of energy by the time everything was over. She wanted to go home! She almost didn’t want to help the Duchess any more. She pouted and crossed her arms.

The Duchess carefully dabbed her mouth with the napkin and turned to see Adeline sulking. The Duchess seemed to sense her frustration, her gaze was soft but with a hint of amusement.

With a gentle, if somewhat mocking, smile, she reached over and tugged playfully at Adeline’s cheek. She teased, "It is very unladylike to pout like that."

Adeline rubbed her cheek and turned her face away. Even breakfast was turned into a lesson, she sobbed.

The Duchess finally showed some mercy, "Alright. That will be it for today."

She stood up and left after saying, "I have matters to attend to."

She didn’t wait for Adelint to reply, she left decisively. The class started early in the morning and went on for a few hours, now she needed to get back to her study to finish her duties as a Duchess.

And that meant Adeline was free to investigate!

Adeline could barely contain her excitement. Now, with the Duchess occupied, she could finally get started on her investigation. She was determined to learn everything she could about the Duke’s past and Everett’s mysterious parentage.

Just who would have dared to get together with a married man she thought...

Her father informed her of their intelligence guilds placed all over the Empire... Which included the Eastern Duchy. Time to make contact. She needed to have a list of all the women who were registered dead five years ago...

She couldn’t rule out the possibility that the woman was a commoner, so she didn’t restrict her search to just nobles.
