Chapter 984: Chapter 963 Bullying
The officers stood but did not leave, circling around the brothers for quite some time. Seeing him drenched in cold sweat and looking genuinely ill, they couldn’t help but turn back to look at those three young men. The leader then turned to ask Manbao, "What illness does he have?"
Manbao sighed. "A very serious illness."
"What kind of serious illness is it?"
"That’s the patient’s privacy, I can’t tell you," Manbao frowned. "Look, there’s no case here, and if you stay in my consultation room, I can’t treat patients. Please leave."
"That won’t do, someone has accused you of malpractice, and as officers of the court, we must investigate thoroughly. If you don’t explain clearly, I will have to take you back to the government office."
Manbao asked, "Who made the accusation?"
The officer pointed at the youth, reconsidered, then turned to point at the three young men.
Young Manager Zheng said, "The patient is right here, and yet you’d listen to the words of three people of unknown origin?"
The officer spoke expressionlessly, "We don’t care about these things, all we know is that human life is paramount. If there’s an accusation, we have to detain and interrogate."
So Manbao said, "But explaining to you won’t make it clear, so how about this? First you go find some knowledgeable doctors, then when I explain, you’ll have a basis for judgment, right?"
She smiled, "I know you don’t trust the doctors from Jishi Hall, no problem, you can find doctors from elsewhere, even an imperial physician would do."
From the side, Shopkeeper Zheng said darkly, "If you can’t get hold of an imperial physician, do you want me to ask Imperial Doctor Zheng to pull some strings for you?"
The atmosphere suddenly quieted down. The leading officer remained silent until another whispered in his ear, "Big Brother, we’ve been here too long, and besides, Jishi Hall belongs to Imperial Doctor Zheng’s family. If this blows up..."
Only then did the leading officer clear his throat and said, "We can’t find a physician at the drop of a hat, so we will record this case for now. However, Zhou Man cannot leave the capital, as we will need to summon him at any time."
Shopkeeper Zheng then turned to Young Manager Zheng and said, "Please escort our officers out."
After sending the officers out, Shopkeeper Zheng also went to apologize to the patients in the main hall, saying that it was wrong to have alarmed them today.
Once he had calmed the patients down and come back in, Manbao had already removed the needles from the man’s arm. He, drenched in sweat, asked Manbao, "What illness do you say I have?"
"Neurological disorder," Manbao replied gravely. "It’s a disease of the nerves, very serious. But you’ve caught it early, and it’s still treatable."
The man immediately asked, "Do I need medication?"
"Yes, wait, I’ll prescribe some for you."
After writing a prescription, she handed it to him and said, "This is for two doses, come back for a follow-up after you’ve finished them. By then, I’ll determine if we should switch to another treatment method."
The man nodded at the prescription, his brothers also looked on in stunned silence, and went out with him, muttering quietly, "So you really are sick, huh? Weren’t you full of energy before?"
"How would I know? Didn’t she just say some illnesses are hidden deep, sometimes you don’t even realize it until the symptoms show."
"Now what do we do? How do we explain this to the Yin Family’s steward?"
"Just tell the truth, return the money. This is my fault, I owe you guys. Once I’m cured, I’ll treat you to drinks."
Watching the four go off to fetch their medicines, Shopkeeper Zheng let the curtain drop and asked, "A neurological disease? I’ve never heard of such an illness?"
Manbao chuckled, "There are many odd diseases in this world."
Shopkeeper Zheng shook his head and said, "Clean up and go home, best not come in tomorrow. Be careful at home, too. Once the Yin Family has cooled off and forgotten about this matter, all will be well."
Manbao was skeptical, "Will they forget?"
"They will," Shopkeeper Zheng smiled, "people in the capital are quick to forget, after all, they thrive on excitement. In a few days, something new will come up, and the Yin Family will naturally forget about this."
Yet he was still curious, "How did you get on the wrong side of the Yin Family? Did you encounter Lord Yin’s son yesterday?"
"No, it was my Junior Brother who had a few disagreements with Yin Huo in class."
Shopkeeper Zheng nodded, "No wonder."
Curiously, Manbao asked, "No wonder what?"
"No wonder the ladies of the Yin Family came after you. Don’t you know, Yin Huo is the precious only son of the family. Lord Yin had six daughters before finally having a son. Can you imagine how much the Yin sisters dote on him?"
Manbao retorted, "I have six older brothers and one older sister above me, and I am also the treasured one in our family. But my brothers and sisters have never gone after my Junior Brothers just because we fought at school. The fights are our own business, why should adults get involved?"
Shopkeeper Zheng: ...
Manbao packed her basket, handed it to Daji, and left feeling downcast.
Through Young Manager Zheng, the patients in the main hall knew why Manbao had just faced such a tribulation. Although most were now too wary to greet her, they smiled kindly at her, looks of sympathy on their faces.
After getting on the carriage and finding it boring, Manbao climbed back out to sit beside Daji and asked, "Do you think Bai Shan will be bullied by Yin Huo at school?"
Daji was also worried, but he couldn’t enter the Imperial Academy, so he was unable to help the young master.
Thinking this way, however, Daji felt much safer, because the Imperial Academy was strictly managed. He couldn’t get in, and neither could the Yin Family, so comparatively, the young master was the safest after all. It was Miss Man who was in real danger now.
Bai Shan was not bullied; on the contrary, he was the one who went to bully others.
After the morning class, they had a long break at midday. Bai Shan walked straight to Yin Huo’s desk, and all the classmates turned to look.
The Imperial Academy was the fastest at spreading news among the Six Academies.
First, because most of their students were high officials’ offspring, thus well-connected. Second, the Imperial Academy had the highest proportion of students lodging outside school, with nine-tenths of the student body. Third, they were relatively few in number and the campus was small, so any bit of news could spread in a single morning.
Especially since quite a few students from the academy had witnessed the dispute between the Bai Family and Yin Family this morning, everyone in the class was now aware, including Yin Huo.
As Bai Shan approached Yin Huo, a fire of gossip ignited in their chests. Two of the more excited even clenched their fists, eyes shining as they muttered, "Hit him, hit him, do it quickly..."
Yin Huo sat at his seat, his face red with embarrassment, stubbornly looking down, fingers nervously clutching his textbook.
Bai Shan, originally intending to pick a fight, no longer felt quite right about attacking upon seeing this state. However, he didn’t hold back much, slapping the table and saying, "Yin Huo, come outside, I have something to talk to you about."
Swallowing nervously, Yin Huo replied softly, "I... I don’t want to go out."
"Fine, if you won’t come out, we can talk here. I want to ask you, did you have your sisters stop me today? Did you tell them to do that?"
