Chapter 948: 927 Chapter: Stealing Skills and Being Blatantly Open

Manbao prepared the prescription and saw Shopkeeper Zheng standing by, so she handed the prescription to him first, "Would you like to check?"

Shopkeeper Zheng felt a bit awkward, thinking Manbao was unhappy with him standing by and watching, but when the prescription was handed to him, he took it and looked it over, nodding, "Not bad, not bad, if it were me, I would prescribe the same, with the same dosage."

The patients and their families in the room all sighed in relief. Although this young doctor seemed quite skilled, her age was indeed very young, and she was a girl.

Shopkeeper Zheng handed the prescription to them and, once they had left, wanted to connect with Manbao, fearing she harbored any resentment over the incident. To his surprise, Manbao was also waiting for them to leave.

As soon as they left, Manbao cheerfully pulled out a medical record book and handed it to Shopkeeper Zheng, "You arrived at just the right time. These are the patients I saw this morning and the prescriptions I wrote. Could you check if there are any improvements to be made?"

Shopkeeper Zheng paused, carefully observing Manbao, and after confirming she was indeed happy, he took the medical record book. "Did Young Doctor Zhou in Yizhou City also often show his medical record book to other doctors?"

"Not really," Manbao replied. "Doctor Ji said that the medical records are the patients’ privacy and should not be shown to others, even though I’m still learning, I have to abide by that. So, I only show them to Doctor Ji and Shopkeeper Zheng to get their advice."

Shopkeeper Zheng: ... How is that different from showing it to everyone?

Aren’t there only these two doctors in Yizhou City?

Oh, and Doctor Ji’s son, Young Doctor Ji.

Shopkeeper Zheng felt this child’s innocence was worrying. He glanced at the thin three pages in the medical record book, closed it, and said, "It all seems very well handled."

After pausing, he continued, "Better than I had thought, even. The first two cases were managed even better than I could have done, but from now on, just show these records to me, and don’t easily show them to others."

Manbao agreed, "Yes, I will seek more guidance from you in the future."

Shopkeeper Zheng smiled lightly and nodded, "Good."

As Shopkeeper Zheng went out, he saw the hall filled with people, some holding prescriptions waiting for their medicine, others waiting to see a doctor. The other two examination rooms, even the one on the other side of a large medicine cabinet, had many patients waiting, but Manbao’s area was mostly empty, awaiting just a few patients.

Clearly, the word had spread through Jishi Hall; the doctor in this room was a young girl.

When Shopkeeper Zheng came out, a patient immediately opened the curtain and went in.

Shopkeeper Zheng glanced at the long queue next to him and couldn’t help but touch his beard and smile, these patients were all underestimating the young doctor inside.

In fact, not only them, but even he had initially underestimated her.

Doctor Ji and Shopkeeper Zheng had written to him saying her talent was extremely high, that she had several medical texts they had never seen before which could be considered treasures in the medical community. They said the only difference between Manbao and a renowned doctor was age and experience.

So he went to great lengths to recruit her, but now it seemed, what she lacked was not age or experience, but just age.

Whether dealing with Dou Zhu’er’s case or the father and son earlier, she had handled it very well. It was evident; Doctor Ji had taught her very well.

To become a good doctor, one needs more than just medical skills, especially during the growth phase.

Manbao had few patients and she was evidently aware of this fact, and thus she treated each patient with great care, carefully advising them and meticulously writing prescriptions. However, meticulous as she was, by lunchtime, she had finished seeing all the patients who were lined up outside.

Manbao looked outside for a while and then simply moved a small stool to the doorway to watch the patients of the two doctors next door. Whenever she saw a disease that interested her, as soon as a patient entered the room next door, Manbao would bring her teapot over to offer tea and take the opportunity to observe how the two doctors treated their patients.

However, she was still new to the area and not familiar with them, so she just silently watched for a while without interrupting or asking questions.

When she had seen enough, she left.

Seeing her so blatantly learning from them, Doctor Tao and Doctor Yu were speechless for a long moment.

Manbao returned to her own clinic, thought for a bit, and then took out blank paper to write down two case studies and prescriptions. After looking at the time, she handed the prescriptions to Young Manager Zheng, "I am going home and won’t disturb Doctor Tao and Doctor Yu. These are two case studies and prescriptions from medical books I’ve read. If they have time tomorrow, we might discuss these prescriptions."

Young Doctor Zhou looked down at what he was given and saw one prescription for treating cold-induced ailments and another for treating childhood fright. Both were common conditions, but the prescriptions were slightly different from what they usually used.

He found it odd, "Why does Young Doctor Zhou suddenly want to discuss prescriptions with Doctor Tao and Doctor Yu? Were there any issues with the diseases they treated today?"

Manbao shook her head and smiled, "No, it’s just an exchange, isn’t it? Didn’t Shopkeeper Zheng say that Doctor Yu specializes in childhood ailments and Doctor Tao in treating externally contracted wind diseases?"

It’s not customary to directly present case studies and modified prescriptions for discussion, is it?

Isn’t it typically done when a doctor’s reputation is widely recognized or when there is a problem with the treatment of a case?

Manbao had already turned and gone back to pack her basket to go home.

Young Manager Zheng scratched his head, took the prescriptions, and planned to bring them out for discussion during the lunch break.

Manbao was learning medicine from Doctor Ji and often consulted him. Mr. Zhuang then let her copy her own medical books to give to Doctor Ji, and whenever Doctor Ji had questions about a condition, she would consult Teacher Mo, and both of them would seek the appropriate prescriptions and various arguments from the endless books...

And Doctor Ji, in turn, became more dedicated to her, and their relationship evolved from mere exchanges to that of mentors and friends, and peers as well.

From that time on, Manbao had figured it out—knowledge was never free, she had to give something in order to learn; and relationships developed through exchange, one-sided efforts were undesirable by anyone.

Since she had just stealthily learned from Doctor Ding and Doctor Tao, she naturally had to give something back.

This was an act of reciprocity; having shared her knowledge, she wouldn’t feel too embarrassed to sneak in to learn next time, and through such interactions, their acquaintance would naturally deepen.

Doctor Tao and Doctor Ding knew nothing of this; they wouldn’t think so much like Manbao, as adults, they rarely pondered over such social niceties.

They were simply displeased with Manbao’s sneaking in to learn, but this displeasure disappeared once they received the prescriptions.

The two doctors, realizing the names and dosages of the medicines, had an epiphany, "So that’s how it is, so that’s how it is. Young Manager Zheng, did Young Doctor Zhou say she got this from another medical book? Do you know which book it was, and are there other prescriptions?"

Doctor Gu couldn’t help but step forward to look, and Shopkeeper Zheng smiled and sat down at the table, "There’s no hurry to discuss this, let’s eat first, there are still patients waiting outside. We’ll talk after we get through this busy period."
