Chapter 900: Chapter 878 Riding Horses is Good

County Magistrate Yang had a lot of time when he didn’t need to visit the towns, especially now that it was spring planting season. All the seeds and farming tools that needed to be distributed at the beginning had already been dispatched, and it was only necessary to review them now, so he wasn’t busy at all.

Luojiang County wasn’t like Huayang County either, where cases cropped up every three to five days. Here, it was hard to have a dispute every ten or fifteen days, and unless it was a major case, County Magistrate Yang liked to accumulate half a month’s cases and judge them all in one day.

Everyone preferred it this way too. They needed to be out in the fields. Who had the time to come to the court every day?

So County Magistrate Yang went home early today, as was only natural.

Just after lunch, a group of people began to eagerly await the arrival of County Magistrate Tang.

County Magistrate Yang calmly drank his tea to reassure them, "It won’t be that quick."

But thinking of Tang Zhihe’s impulsive temperament and calculating the distance from Yizhou City to Luojiang County, he said, "If he speeds up his horse, he could be here in about an hour or so."

Manbao exclaimed, "That fast? It takes us an entire day."

"You were in a carriage, whereas he’s on horseback. Naturally, it’s quicker."

No sooner had he spoken than, just after they had sipped some tea, County Magistrate Tang arrived in a flurry, his hair somewhat disheveled.

He walked in following Wantian and didn’t notice Ms. Cui; he just nodded to Manbao and the others, then began to complain to County Magistrate Yang, "The wind was too strong. Have a servant prepare some hot water for me to wash up first. Oh, and I haven’t had lunch yet. I left at dawn, and it’s already been three hours."

County Magistrate Yang was still holding his tea and hadn’t spoken when Ms. Cui quickly stood up and ordered, "Go to the kitchen and prepare hot water for Old Master Tang."

She then turned to him with a smile, "What would you like to eat, cousin-in-law? I’ll have the kitchen prepare it right away."

It was only then that County Magistrate Tang noticed Ms. Cui, and he stared blankly for a while before he hurriedly greeted her, "Is this my sister-in-law? My apologies, my apologies."

He also reproached Heshu, "You too. My sister-in-law is here, and you didn’t even introduce me?"

Heshu finally put down his teacup, looking at him with a speechless expression, "Did you give me a chance to speak? You came in and started rattling off nonstop," pointing to Manbao and the others, "they couldn’t even get a word in."

Heshu waved his hand, "Go ahead and wash up."

Then he told Ms. Cui, "Just let the kitchen prepare something simple; he’s not fussy."

County Magistrate Tang nodded repeatedly, "Yes, yes, I’m not picky. Sister-in-law, prepare whatever you like."

After saying this, County Magistrate Tang turned and left, with Wantian leading him to wash up.

Once he was gone, Manbao finally got a chance to speak. She turned to Bai Shan and said, "Riding a horse cuts the travel time by a third compared to a carriage. We should ride horses in the future."

Bai Shan said, "I don’t have a problem. I’ve been learning to ride for half a year already. Can you?"

Manbao thought about her budget and then gritted her teeth, "I’ll also buy a horse and learn to ride."

Bai Shan got excited, "I’ll teach you."

"No, you’ve only been learning for a short while yourself. I’ll have Daji teach me." Turning her head, she called out, "Daji, can you teach me how to ride a horse?"

Daji nodded with a smile, "If Miss Man wishes to learn, I’m willing to teach."

Bai Erlang silently said nothing while beside them, Bai Shan nudged his foot and asked, "Aren’t you learning?"

"I learned it at school."

Manbao then said, "Have your dad buy you your own little horse too, so that when we ride back home from Yizhou City, we can ride together."

Bai Erlang was torn, "I prefer riding in a carriage. You haven’t ridden a horse, you don’t know, it’s quite unbearable."

He glanced awkwardly at County Magistrate Yang and Ms. Cui beside him, and squeezed in between Manbao and Bai Shan saying, "Riding a horse is not only a pain in the butt, but the wind hurts your face and eyes too."

Manbao then looked towards Bai Shan.

But Bai Shan said, "I think it’s quite exciting and liberating."

The two couldn’t come to an agreement, and Manbao wasn’t sure whose opinion was more important, so she waited for Lord Tang to refresh himself and come over, then she asked him, "Lord Tang, which is better, riding a horse or riding in a carriage?"

Lord Tang blinked, looked towards County Magistrate Yang, saw him sitting there smiling without offering any clarification, then glanced at Bai Shan and Bai Erlang who were eagerly looking at him, he vaguely guessed their thoughts, then grinned at Manbao, "Naturally, riding a horse is better."

He sat down at the table and asked, "Do you find riding in a carriage bumpy?"

Manbao nodded.

"That’s right, a good horse ride feels like walking on flat ground, without the bumps of a carriage. Moreover, riding a horse is faster and more comfortable than riding in a carriage, naturally, it’s better to ride a horse."

County Magistrate Yang laughed so hard his teacup shook. He tried to hold back his laughter and put down his teacup, then said to Lord Tang, "Come on, aren’t you hungry? We’ve prepared some food for you."

With that, the servants brought over two plates of dishes and a bowl of noodles, Ms. Cui smiled shyly, "It’s a bit simple, I hope your cousin-in-law doesn’t mind."

"Too modest, sister-in-law," laughed Lord Tang, "I can’t even get such good food at home, just getting a bowl of noodles from your cousin would be great."

By now, Manbao had already decided to learn horse riding and had even quietly persuaded Bai Erlang. She looked up, hearing them refer to each other with different familial terms, and found it quite intriguing, "Are all four of your families related?"

Lord Tang just smiled and continued eating his noodles, but County Magistrate Yang carefully explained, "Sort of but not really. The major families intermarry, and nearly every family has some relation to another. If we took the time to trace every connection, it would take days, so we simply refer to each other by our closest relations."

Why couldn’t County Magistrate Yang remember that Ms. Cui and Madam Tang were cousins? Because the relation was indeed a bit distant.

Ms. Cui’s grandmother and Madam Tang Ms. Wang’s maternal grandmother are both from the Ms. Lu family, making them cousins.

And that was considered a simple family connection. If they were to count all the distant relatives back home, it might turn out that Yang Heshu and Ms. Cui were of different generations.

Mr. Zhuang had not yet taught them about their family trees, but she occasionally heard Bai Shan mention some, she nodded puzzled, feeling that their major family relatives were even more numerous and complex than those in the Zhou Family and Qili Village.

As Lord Tang ate, Manbao, Bai Shan, and Bai Erlang propped their chins up and watched eagerly. Ms. Cui felt it wasn’t proper and suggested they go to the garden to digest their food.

The three shook their heads together, looking at Lord Tang, "We’ll wait for Lord Tang to finish eating."

County Magistrate Yang then laughed, "Let them wait, their hearts wouldn’t be at ease if they went out."

Ms. Cui then smiled and asked, "I see, do they have some business with their cousin-in-law?"

County Magistrate Yang nodded but did not elaborate on the matter, simply saying, "Let them go, by the way, isn’t it time for your nap? You go rest first."

It was also time for County Magistrate Yang to take a nap, but seeing that he made no move to leave, Ms. Cui hesitated for a moment then excused herself and left, while Lord Tang and the others hastily paid their respects as she departed.

Lord Tang ate quickly, and after wiping his mouth, he said, "Let’s go to the study."
