Chapter 855: Chapter 833: Pleading
Manbao scratched her head and said, "It was Bai Shan who saved him. Doctor Ji and I are both doctors, treating and saving people is our duty, and the Ji Family has already paid a lot of consultation fees."
Wei Ting replied, "How can it be so clearly divided? We all know that if it hadn’t been for you stopping the bleeding, Ji Hao would have been buried by now. And during his recovery, he mumbled some words. He didn’t voice it out, but he has always felt very sorry."
Manbao thought about it earnestly before she remembered that incident, then casually waved her hand and said, "I thought it was something serious, I would have forgotten about it if you hadn’t mentioned it."
Wei Ting laughed, "That’s good, I just said you are generous and wouldn’t fuss over these things. I’ll talk to him about it; we are all good friends."
Bai Erlang quietly nudged Manbao’s foot, and Manbao thought to herself, Who wants to be friends with him?
What if he causes trouble next time and drags them all into it?
However, Manbao didn’t say anything, nor did she nod.
Wei Ting took her silence as consent and became happy, "You don’t know, because of you, Bai Shan also ignores Ji Hao. Ever since school started, their relationship has been a bit tense, even though they should actually be very close."
Bai Erlang and Manbao, horrified, asked, "Why would you think that?"
Wei Ting naturally said, "Isn’t that normal? After all, Bai Shan saved Ji Hao. Their relationship should naturally be very good."
Manbao and Bai Erlang exchanged glances and could only give Wei Ting an embarrassed smile.
They didn’t know whether Ji Hao wanted to be friends with Bai Shan, but they were certain Bai Shan wouldn’t want to be friends with Ji Hao; neither did they.
The carriage pulled up in front of the gate; Bai Shan got in the carriage, and everyone else got into their own family’s carriages, all heading towards Manbao’s small courtyard.
Though they knew Bai Shan and the other two lived together, and knew their address, besides Wei Ting, no one had actually visited.
Naturally, not all the carriages could enter the alley, so everyone got off outside the alley and Manbao invited everyone in.
Zhou SiLang was carefully watering his beloved moutan peonies, cautious not to pour too much, when he looked up and saw Manbao and Bai Shan with Bai Erlang and many youngsters returning, he stood up in surprise.
Manbao and a few others introduced her brother Zhou SiLang, "This is my older brother, and this is my second niece; our teacher is in the study."
Out of politeness, the group of youngsters went to give their respects to Mr. Zhuang in the study first; after the noisy greetings, they then left the study to look at the peonies.
They had already glanced at the white peonies under the eaves, which were strikingly captivating, but upon seeing the yaohuang and moutan peony next to them, they felt these only added to the charm.
Everyone crowded around, repeatedly saying, "These yaohuang and moutan peony are really beautiful."
"The quality is excellent, especially this moutan peony; the color is rich and noble. Although the flowers are not yet fully bloomed, from the looks of the half-open buds, they are evidently large."
"Yes, yes, such flowers are top-notch not only in Yizhou City but even in the capital."
Zhou SiLang, listening on the side, became a bit anxious because they had talked so much but hadn’t mentioned how much the flowers were worth.
Manbao asked, "Do you want to buy them?"
The youngsters nodded together, then shook their heads together, "We just want to look; we can’t afford them."
"Yes, it’s too expensive, too expensive."
Wei Ting also felt very tempted, and finally gritted his teeth, "I’ll go ask my grandmother, but I’ll buy a pot of white peonies first. The color of your white peonies is really pure. With such color and buds," he paused, "the price shouldn’t be set so low."
Manbao smiled and said, "I just set the price this way."
Seeing her insistence, Wei Ting naturally wouldn’t ask her to raise the price, but instead gave her a thumbs up and said, "After seeing these flowers, I now know you really gave us a low price."
Everyone nodded together.
Previously, Manbao had said they were pure white, but everyone thought that was unlikely. Peonies were quite expensive, and although they didn’t deal in them, they had heard bits and pieces by being around their doting grandmothers and mothers.
So before coming, they were merely curious and didn’t hold much hope. They thought that as long as the peonies weren’t too poor, they’d buy them to let their families appreciate them and also to support Manbao’s business.
The result was unexpectedly good, and the young men felt a bit embarrassed. In the end, they asked Manbao again, "Are you really not raising the price?"
Manbao shook his head and asked Wei Ting, "Are you really buying only one pot? You’re giving one to your grandmother, but not to your mother?"
Wei Ting didn’t understand, "Once I bring it home, my mother can enjoy it too."
"That’s not the same. When I buy gifts for my sister-in-law, I always buy another for my mother as well."
Wei Ting couldn’t see the connection, but hesitated and then nodded, "Alright, I’ll buy two pots then."
After all, the flowers were beautiful and not too expensive.
Manbao then questioned two other young men from outside Yizhou City, "You’re not from Yizhou City—do you still want to buy? It’s not easy to transport these home. Maybe you shouldn’t buy them?"
The two, who were initially nodding, felt Manbao’s reluctance to sell to them and were unwilling to agree, "No, we also want to fulfill our filial duties to our families."
"That’s right; we want to buy two pots as well."
Manbao thought for a moment and then said, "Buy just one pot. Try it and see if you can get it home without losing too much."
The young men looked at her, stunned. "Are you truly considering our best interests?"
Manbao nodded seriously, "Of course, I am a very good seller."
The two young men thought for a moment, nodded, and then bought only one pot.
Twenty pots of white peonies sold out quickly; eight pots were gone in an instant. Zhou Silang collected the money and, thoughtfully, helped Zhou Lijun carry the flowers out to the alley and carefully placed them on the carriage.
Wei Ting then borrowed a cart from Bai Shan, "I’ll take them home now, to avoid another trip tomorrow."
And he also wanted to talk to his grandmother about the two pots of Yaohuang Moutan Peony from Manbao’s place; he thought she would definitely like them.
Bai Shan, about to speak but stopping himself, saw the excitement on his face and said nothing, letting Daji drive the carriage to take him back to the Wei Family.
Once the carriage left the alley, Manbao said, "Is it really okay not to remind him that he’s skipping school?"
Bai Shan responded, "It is, after all, his act of filial piety. I think his father won’t punish him too harshly."
Bai Erlang had just entered and quietly told him that Wei Ting was avoiding him and making peace on behalf of Ji Hao and Manbao.
Bai Shan snorted softly, suppressing the hint of guilt in his heart.
Zhou Silang came back delighted, holding the money he had collected and approached Manbao, "Manbao, come count the money."
Manbao then said, "Silang, I’ll hold onto this money."
Zhou Silang had no objections and nodded, "You need money to buy flowers as well. By the way, does the flower farmer still have white peonies? If so, buy some more. At sixteen taels per pot, selling more can be quite profitable."
Bai Shan then said, "If you sell too many, they won’t be worth sixteen taels per pot anymore. I think the way it is now is good; selling more would offend people."
Manbao nodded, "I also only plan to sell these twenty pots."
