Chapter 836: Chapter 814: Promise
Manbao’s mouth was covered, and she reached out to try to pry off his palm, but found that Zhou Hu’s large hand was pressing down particularly tightly. Helplessly, she looked towards Bai Shan.
Bai Shan stepped forward and helped pry Zhou Hu’s hand away.
Only then did Zhou Hu realize and quickly released his grasp.
Manbao let out a breath before saying, "My parents talked to me about this, Zhou Hu, could you not startle me like that?"
Zhou Hu swallowed and looked from Bai Shan to Manbao, unable to help but ask, "Why would your parents tell you that?"
Manbao looked back at him, and after a moment of silent eye contact between the tall and the short, she also lowered her voice, "Zhou Hu, please don’t tell anyone else about this, and don’t mention it to Sister-in-law Hu either."
Zhou Hu: ... Who in the village doesn’t know about it?
But meeting Manbao’s gaze, he nonetheless nodded.
After leaving Zhou Hu’s house, the three of them found a spot at the edge of the fields and sat down in a row, facing the setting sun descending behind the mountains.
Daji silently stood behind them, guarding.
Zhou Hu also looked around carefully before asking, "Why are you asking all this?"
"I just want to go see. I’ve asked my older brothers, and they said the one who used to play with my dad the most was you, Zhou Hu. Every time my dad went into the mountains you followed."
Zhou Hu said, "Not only did he go to Da Hu Mountain, but he also went to other mountains. If you want to see the places he has been, shall I take you to some other places?"
"I don’t want to, I just want to go to Da Hu Mountain."
Zhou Hu frowned.
Manbao insisted, looking at him, "Zhou Hu, please, the places in Da Hu Mountain that my dad liked the most, the places he visited the most often, or even the farthest place he reached, can you take me to see them, please?"
Zhou Hu was silent for a moment, unable to withstand Manbao’s gaze, and could only nod, "Okay, but there are quite a few places. Do you have the time?"
Manbao became excited, saying, "We’ll leave early tomorrow morning and try to cover everything in one day."
Zhou Hu smiled, thinking this was impossible, as his dad was a hunter who used to take him and Zhou Yin into the mountains, finding that reaching the deepest parts often involved staying overnight.
He didn’t tell Manbao, planning to take her to a few places where she would naturally give up once she was tired and sleepy.
Manbao, unaware of Zhou Hu’s intentions, happily took her leave with Bai Shan. After returning home, she discussed with Keke, "Tomorrow I’ll be counting on your help."
Keke said, "I’ll do my best, but currently I can only scan within a range of eight hundred meters with you as the center. Da Hu Mountain is so large, it’s likely to take quite some time."
Manbao clenched her fists, "It doesn’t matter; I’ve waited twelve years already, and Liu Gui and the others searched for four years. I don’t mind spending a bit more time to search."
Keke said, "It would be good if the host could level up more."
Manbao, ashamed, "I always end up cramming at the last minute, it is really embarrassing. I will try harder in the future."
Keke responded without pressing the issue further.
Manbao’s determination was ignited. She got up early the next day to head into the mountains. Zhou SiLang, of course, would follow, and even Zhou ErLang caught up this time.
Seeing Manbao empty-handed and ready to enter the mountains, Keke biubiu flashed, and Manbao, snapping back to reality, immediately turned around to bring her exclusive small basket and hoe.
Zhou SiLang stared, bewildered, "You’re going into the mountains to search, and you still plan to dig up flowers and herbs?"
Manbao sternly said, "One doesn’t interfere with the other. Silang, you should know, everything in this world complements each other. Two things that seem unrelated are actually intricately connected."
Zhou SiLang: "I’m breaking my head trying to figure out, what does finding the things left by Uncle have to do with you digging up those plants?"
"That’s because you are not smart enough, and you don’t know enough," Manbao retorted, shouldering her basket and moving on.
Zhou Erlang said to Zhou Silang, "Alright, if Manbao wants to tag along, let her. Stop making a fuss about it."
Zhou Silang felt wronged. After all, who was the one not minding their own business and causing all the trouble?
But Zhou Erlang obviously didn’t care about his mood. These past days, everyone in the Zhou Family, from Old Zhou down to Zhou Wulang, who knew the actual situation, treated Manbao with extra care, willing to fulfill any request. They were all worried that her origins might upset her.
So, it wasn’t just that she wanted to carry a basket and a hoe up the mountain to dig for herbs. If she wished to pluck the stars from the sky, Zhou Dalang and the others would find a way to get her something similar to appease her.
Zhou Silang silently followed. By the time they reached the village entrance, Bai Shan and Daji were already waiting, and then Bai Erlang ran out from his house.
His eyes glaring angrily, he confronted them, "I’ve finally caught you two. Tell me, what have you been up to these last couple of days behind my back, and why can’t I ever find you?"
Bai Shan said, "We’re going to look for something up on the mountain, and it’s really tiring. Do you want to come?"
Bai Erlang’s gaze fixed on the basket on Manbao’s back, his surprise apparent. "You’re going up the mountain to gather herbs and need to take so many people with you? How precious are these herbs?"
Manbao turned her eyes craftily and lowered her voice, "Lingzhi!"
Bai Erlang’s eyes widened, and he immediately said, "Impossible, how could there be Lingzhi on the mountain?"
"Why not?" Manbao retorted. "Lingzhi grows in valleys. With Dahushan being so vast, who says it can’t grow here? Hasn’t someone already seen it inside?"
"Who?"
Without missing a beat, Manbao lied and pointed at Zhou Hu, "Brother Zhou Hu."
Bai Erlang immediately looked at Zhou Hu.
Zhou Hu, with a stiff bravado, nodded, "That’s right."
Bai Erlang was tempted but still asked, "Then why didn’t you pick it at the time?"
Zhou Hu opened his mouth, glanced at Manbao.
Manbao explained, "Because he didn’t know if it was poisonous or not. By the time he went back in, the Lingzhi had already been nibbled on by some wild animal."
A look of regret appeared on Bai Erlang’s face.
Manbao seriously added, "I think if Lingzhi was found once on the mountain, there’s bound to be a second and a third. That’s why I want to go into the mountain to look for it. Do you want to join?"
Bai Erlang pondered this.
Bai Shan asked, "Do you still need to go to the Taoist temple today?"
"The temple fair is over, so what’s the point of going?"
Bai Shan suggested, "Then you’d be idling in the village anyway. Why not come up the mountain with us?"
Bai Erlang thought about it and decided to go with them.
Halfway through their journey, Liu Gui also joined them with a sickle and three other people. Bai Erlang couldn’t help but turn back to look at them.
Bai Shan explained, "There’s no work in the fields yet, so I thought since Brother Liu Gui and the others are free anyway, they might as well go up the mountain with us."
Bai Erlang asked in a low voice, "What if we don’t find anything?"
"If we don’t find it, it just means it’s not our fate. We can always try again next time." Bai Shan had been anxious before, but after thinking it over last night, he agreed with Manbao that twelve years had passed, so why rush it in one day?
Bai Erlang clicked his tongue, "You are leading so many people on a wild-goose chase up the mountain, and your great-grandmother doesn’t scold you?"
Bai Shan shook his head.
Bai Erlang envied, "Your great-grandmother and great-aunt are really nice."
Bai Shan and Manbao turned to him and said, "Your grandmother and mother dote on you the most, don’t they?"
