Chapter 83: Chapter 72: Chinese Yam (Additional update for ’Miao Miao’s’ birthday)

Manbao also got excited, waving her little hands and shouting, "I want to go too!"

Zhou Dalang asked her, "What are you going to do there?"

"I want to sell medicine at the pharmacy," Manbao said, "Big brother, you don’t need to take the Indian pennywort anymore, we’ll take it ourselves."

"You have school though!"

"Not necessary," Manbao said, "Tomorrow is a day off!"

Zhou Dalang was startled and then remembered that tomorrow indeed was a day off. He scratched his head, not good at refusing Manbao, and could only say, "Go ask your mother."

Ms.Qian was initially reluctant to agree, but seeing her daughter so enthusiastic, she hesitated for a moment before nodding her head.

Watching her little girl with her rosy cheeks full of excitement, Ms.Qian thought it might be good to let her get out more. At least she wasn’t always hovering around her and Junior Ms.Qian, where as a four- or five-year-old, the only thing to do was to play with ants on her own.

Overjoyed, Manbao quickly ran out to tell everyone the good news, asking them to pack the dried Indian pennywort and take it to the county town tomorrow.

Datou and Daya were very happy, thinking their little aunt had also spoken for them and their grandmother, so they all prepared to go to the county town together.

Early the next morning, the children got up early, neatly dressed and ready to follow along.

Zhou Dalang, seeing so many children, felt overwhelmed and reluctant to take them, saying, "It’s fine if your little aunt goes, but why are you all joining in the excitement?"

Datou confidently said, "Grandma already agreed."

Zhou Dalang thought his mother had really agreed, so he was somewhat hesitant. In the meantime, Datou had already led his three younger siblings onto the cart, sitting down and surrounding their little aunt in the center.

It was early winter by then, and quite cold in the mornings, but with everyone huddling close, it wasn’t so cold anymore.

So, Manbao said, "Big brother, just let them come. They know quite a few characters now, and this time we can take them out for some new experiences."

"What’s there to experience? They can go when they’re as old as Five and Sixth. And besides, we don’t have that much dry food with us."

Recalling the dry food she had eaten last time in the market and county town, which she disliked, Manbao said, "It’s okay; I’ll give them my share."

She would buy something to eat when the time came.

With every excuse blocked, Zhou Dalang thought about the fact that his mother had agreed, and could only silently consent.

After pushing the cart to the front gate and coming out with her clothes on, Ms.Qian frowned when she saw the older children sitting on the cart. However, after glancing at her two sons, she thought they wanted to take the kids to the county town for a stroll and didn’t say anything out of consideration for her daughters-in-law.

Ms.Qian handed Zhou Dalang a handful of copper coins, saying, "Even though you’re going to sell goods, you should still carry some money with you. Once you’re in the county town, if you’re hungry, go buy some hot food, don’t starve the kids."

Zhou Dalang agreed, then he and Zhou ErLang started pushing the cart together, with Zhou Wulang and Zhou Liulang walking on either side escorting it.

In the darkness, Manbao yawned and fell asleep again leaning against her niece and nephews.

Manbao felt they had started earlier than last time, but it wasn’t actually earlier—it was just that the sun rose later now.

This time Manbao slept even deeper, not waking up until they stopped for a break.

This time they had traveled a bit farther because the cart was much lighter than last time, though they were still in the mountains.

Manbao rubbed her eyes awake and, seeing the dense forests on both sides, got excited. She immediately climbed down from the cart and ran obediently to Zhou Dalang and Zhou Er’s side, very attentively saying, "Big brother, Second brother, you two rest well, please don’t get tired."

Zhou Dalang and Zhou ErLang felt deeply gratified and smiled at her, saying, "Don’t worry, Manbao, your big brother (Second brother) isn’t tired."

"Even if you’re not tired, you should rest more. What if you get tired?" Manbao looked eagerly at the forests on either side and said, "Big brother, Second brother, you rest first. Shall I go get you some wild fruit to eat?"

Zhou Dalang then understood that she wanted to play in the forest, which was why she was urging them to rest more. He was a bit amused and waved his hand, saying, "Go ahead, but don’t go too far, and stay with your Fifth Brother."

Having walked all morning, Wulang was a bit tired too and was squatting on the ground resting. Reluctantly, he followed Manbao, complaining, "What’s so fun about the forest? There aren’t any edible wild fruits around here."

Manbao, however, complained back, "I don’t necessarily need wild fruits. Fifth Brother, you clearly promised to help me find plants I’ve never seen before on the way, but I haven’t seen you bring any back."

Wulang felt a bit embarrassed and said, "These things are all so common. How would I know which ones you’ve seen and which you haven’t?"

Manbao, who was always known for her good memory, could mostly remember the plants she had documented, so as they talked and walked, she recognized many that she had already recorded, sighing and leaning against a tree, saying, "If only I were a little older."

Then she could go deeper into the forest, where she could find many plants for Keke.

Manbao felt she was growing too slowly and asked Keke, "Keke, do you have a medicine that can make a person grow overnight?"

The system said, "Host, humans in the interstellar pursue the opposite—they want to shrink overnight. If you want a medicine to reverse aging and make you younger, there are some in the store, though they are expensive."

Manbao replied, "I don’t want that kind of medicine. I want to grow up quickly, not get smaller."

She also said, "People in the future are weird. I’ve only heard about people wanting to grow up. Why do they like turning back into children?"

She continued, "As a child, there are so many things you want to do but can’t."

The system said, "You will understand in twenty years, host. At that time, you are welcome to order the reverse aging medicine."

Manbao didn’t think that day would come.

They continued talking and searching for valuable plants, with Manbao using her eyes and the system using its scans.

Since becoming its master, Keke had not leveled up because it lacked points, so its scanning range was limited to two hundred meters around Manbao.

But what Manbao could see was not just two hundred meters. As long as the view was clear, she could see very far into the distance.

So she stood on her tiptoes, peering left, right, and down, when she noticed a clump of plants behind a tree.

Those plants seemed familiar, yet she felt she hadn’t seen them before.

Thus, Manbao, leaning on the tree for support, walked over, with Liulang hurrying to assist her. As they went, he asked, "The slope here is steep, why do you insist on coming here?"

Manbao finally reached the tree and pointed at the clump of plants, asking, "Fifth Brother, what is this?"

Liulang glanced at it and shook his head, saying, "I don’t know."

At the same time, the system finally finished scanning and announced, "It’s Chinese yam!"
