Chapter 792: Chapter 781 Make You

Manbao and his friends had been busy for a while and were hungry, so they headed back to the restaurant, propped themselves up on the second floor, and waited for their food while watching the river of lanterns flowing below.

County Magistrate Yang dealt with the only conflict of the evening, glanced down to see that his "citizens" were safe, and strolled over to the next room with his hands clasped behind his back.

Because he smelled the enticing fragrance of the food.

The waiter was just bringing late-night snacks for Manbao and his party when County Magistrate Yang arrived, not even needing to knock on the door, "Having fun?"

All three nodded continuously and invited County Magistrate Yang to sit down.

"Lord Yang, aren’t you going out to enjoy yourself?"

"I would have liked to, but with you guys here, I can’t be at ease."

Bai Shan: "Lord Yang, we don’t need your protection."

Manbao: "That’s right, we have Daji."

County Magistrate Yang lifted his eyelids to glance at them and said, "No, I’m protecting others."

Manbao blinked and catching on, turned to Bai Shan, "Are we the bad guys?"

Bai Shan: "No, we are the good guys."

Manbao then jutted his chin out towards County Magistrate Yang in a gesture.

County Magistrate Yang simply offered the trio a silent smile.

Even Bai Erlang couldn’t help but snort and turned his head away, ignoring him.

Though they were reluctant to engage with him, Bai Shan still instructed the waiter to add an extra set of utensils for him as a guest.

After being busy for half the evening, County Magistrate Yang was quite hungry; he looked over the dishes they had ordered and nodded in satisfaction.

He knew that dining with these three youngsters, he would never eat poorly.

"You have seen the lanterns and guessed the riddles, and tonight was lively because of you. What is next, are you going home?"

Bai Erlang: "We’ve barely started; we plan to leave at midnight."

County Magistrate Yang then turned to ask his attendant beside him, "Is it 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. yet?"

The attendant replied, "We haven’t heard the night watch gong; it’s not yet time."

Manbao checked the time in the system and confirmed, "Not yet, it’s fifteen minutes off."

County Magistrate Yang advised them, "Aren’t you tired? Usually, at this time, you are already asleep, right? And you still need time to go back."

All three shook their heads in unison and confidently said, "We are not tired at all."

County Magistrate Yang ceased to persuade them and asked instead, "So tell me, what are you planning to do next for fun?"

Manbao grinned and said, "We are going to do business."

County Magistrate Yang became interested and said, "Come on, after the late-night snack, I’ll join you for a walk to see what kind of business you are doing."

This promptly quietened everyone as they began to enjoy their late-night snacks, with County Magistrate Yang clearly a regular customer at the restaurant, explaining which dish on the table was the tastiest.

As they were relishing their meal, a commotion suddenly started outside. Everyone in the room heard a sharp reprimand from outside, "This room has always been used by our family; now you say we can’t use it this year—who are you kidding? I really want to see who is inside..."

Upon saying that, the door was pushed open with a "bang".

Daji stood up calmly and moved behind Bai Shan.

The four who were still seated turned their heads in unison towards the door. The people outside stiffened upon seeing County Magistrate Yang, and the crowd instantly fell silent.

Manbao stared at the young woman who pushed open the door for a long time until he recognized her. Waving his hand excitedly, he called out, "It’s Sister Zhang."

Ms. Zhang then turned to look at Manbao and struggled to recognize who she was.

County Magistrate Yang looked between her and Manbao and asked with a smile, "So, you know the eldest Miss from Principal Clerk Zhang’s family?"

"Yes, when I was little, Sister Zhang loved to eat the candy from my family. I often sold candy to her," Manbao said as he looked at the now greatly changed Miss Zhang, feeling nostalgic. "I didn’t expect Sister Zhang to be married, but it’s to be expected because Second Sister Fu is married too."

County Magistrate Yang raised an eyebrow.

With that reminder from Manbao, Ms. Zhang finally remembered who she was.

She was the child who frequently sold candy in their alley years ago, the daughter of a farming family who could make friends with Fu Er.

Ms. Zhang looked Manbao up and down and recognized some of her old features from her chubby face. However, she quickly averted her gaze and kneeled to apologize to County Magistrate Yang with regret, "I didn’t realize this was your private room; I have offended you."

Mother Zhang finally caught up and also started apologizing profusely.

County Magistrate Yang stood up, gestured with his hands to Mother Zhang and said with a smile, "Madam, there’s no need for formality. So, you had reserved this room early on?"

The manager, sweating from behind, hurriedly explained, "Principal Clerk Zhang’s family might have forgotten this year and did not reserve. So when Young Master Bai’s party came to pick a room, the restaurant’s staff arranged this one for them. My mistake, I was slow to explain just now, disturbing the guests’ meal—it’s truly my fault. How about this, I will offer a pot of tea and a plate of pastries to the young master and the ladies as compensation."

He clarified the situation clearly with his explanation.

The Zhang family quickly agreed, "We forgot amid the busyness of this year. Instructions were given to a servant, and who knew it was not properly reserved. The elder girl just returned from her in-laws’ and didn’t know, thinking it was reserved, so she acted impulsively."

Standing beside, Ms. Zhang appeared embarrassed, her face a mixture of green and white, but she dared not contradict her aunt.

County Magistrate Yang smiled and suggested, "Aren’t there any rooms left in the inn? Otherwise, let’s give up the room next door to mine, and I’ll just squeeze in with my three young friends here."

The Zhang family could hardly refuse and quickly tried to decline the offer.

County Magistrate Yang said with a laugh, "It’s only right. Normally the Lantern Festival should be a time for Principal Clerk Zhang to reunite with his family, and yet due to the limitations of my abilities, I still require Principal Clerk Zhang and Captain Liu to work overtime during the festive season. It wouldn’t be right for Principal Clerk Zhang to be busy at the front while Madam suffers at the back."

He then instructed his attendants to move everything from the room next door over and to let the Zhang family take it.

Even though the Zhang family showed modesty on their faces, they were secretly elated and accepted after a brief moment of pretense.

Manbao watched the whole episode with great interest. Seeing his Sister Zhang was following them, he cheerfully waved goodbye to her.

Ms. Zhang forced a smile and then followed her relatives to the next room.

Once the private room door was closed again, the manager brought in the apology items. After everyone had left, County Magistrate Yang curiously asked Manbao, "How come you don’t seem very familiar with Miss Zhang from the Zhang family?"

"We are not familiar. My family’s candy was especially delicious, but she found it expensive. However, to speak with Second Sister Fu, she would always buy our candy. Usually, it was my Fifth Brother and Sixth Brother who sold the candy to her, so I’m not familiar with her."

County Magistrate Yang: "Then why were you so enthusiastic about greeting her?"

"Even if we aren’t close, she was once a customer of mine. And back then, when my family was struggling, her children contributed a lot of orders to our family. Since I’ve met her, of course, I had to greet her; otherwise it would be rude."

County Magistrate Yang: "But it seems she wasn’t very happy that you greeted her."

Bai Shan, annoyed by his many questions, interjected: "Whether she’s happy or not is her business; how could we possibly control that? All we need to ensure is that we are not impolite ourselves."

Manbao nodded in agreement with Bai Shan’s point of view.

County Magistrate Yang was dumbfounded and after a moment asked, "Who taught you this?"

Bai Erlang, having had his fill, picked up another piece of pastry to munch on and said, "Our tutor taught us."

County Magistrate Yang took a while before responding, "...Your tutor really does teach you everything."
