Chapter 640: Chapter 629: Caring
Ms.Fang quickly prepared the meal and then squeezed into the hall to join the fun.
Ms.Qian accepted all the gifts, sending people off, "Alright, alright, it’s too late today. We’ll distribute the items tomorrow, and discuss things then. Let Four and the others eat first. Lixue, first thing tomorrow morning, you go to the county town and close the shop for the day, so your mother and the others can come back."
Zhou Lixue agreed.
Everyone moved the items into the main room, while Ms.Qian took Manbao to have dinner. Manbao said, "Mother, we ate some dry food on the road."
"Dry food is cold, and by now you must be hungry again. You need to eat something, your fourth sister-in-law made noodles for you."
Manbao complied.
Old Zhou and Ms.Qian sat by, watching her eat the noodles. Just three months apart, Manbao had changed quite a bit.
Mainly, she had become paler, her fair complexion resembling the white jade on Young Master Bai’s waist, and her cheeks seemed fuller, she had grown taller...
Ms.Qian watched her with satisfaction and asked softly, "Every time your fourth brother comes back, he says you’ve been studying with Mr. Zhuang and learning medicine at Jishi Hall, but when I ask him for more details, he doesn’t know. Tell me, what have you learned?"
Manbao then enthusiastically shared some interesting events, with stories from the pharmacy being mentioned the most.
There was no choice, as every day, every patient who came for a consultation had a story, and there were always some memorable incidents.
Not just Ms.Qian, but Old Zhou by her side also listened in stunned silence.
After finishing the noodles, Manbao chatted with her parents for a while before going to wash up and prepare for bed.
Zhou SiLang naturally spent time with his own wife and children. Even Zhou Lijun was pulled into their room by Zhou ErLang and his wife to eat noodles and talk.
Zhou ErLang asked Zhou Lijun, "Will your little sister be going to Yizhou City again this time?"
Zhou Lijun responded as if it was a given, "Of course she will. Isn’t my little sister supposed to study with Mr. Zhuang? And Father, do you know how impressive she has become now?"
Zhou Lijun raised his head, his eyes sparkling as he described how his little sister would stand in the pharmacy reciting medical books, "Doctor Ji knew little sister was going home for ten days and was so reluctant. He wished she could stay in the pharmacy to learn medicine. Whenever I went to pick up little sister, I could always see Doctor Ji and Shopkeeper Zheng’s eyes shining brightly at her, as bright as if candles were lit in them."
Zhou ErLang: ... What a description.
Ms.Feng lamented, "I can see now, Yizhou City really is different. Look, you haven’t been there long, but you’ve come back a changed person, chattering non-stop while eating noodles..."
Zhou Lijun immediately became more reserved, bowing his head to continue eating.
Zhou ErLang, smiling warmly, said, "It’s not bad to be talkative. By the way, Erya, did you find a job in Yizhou City?"
Zhou Lijun shook his head sadly, "Father, I’ve become familiar with several families and shops in that street and its alleys, but no one is willing to hire me as an accountant."
Ms.Feng then said, "You don’t have to look only for an accountant’s job. You could do other work like washing vegetables and dishes, at least it would earn some money."
Zhou Lijun replied, "I don’t want to do that. Rather than those, I’d rather help my Fourth Uncle, assisting with his accounts and business."
Unable to help herself, Ms.Feng blinked in surprise, "Does your Fourth Uncle pay you a wage?"
"Of course, he does," boasted Zhou Lijun proudly. "I’m very good at keeping Uncle’s accounts, and I keep the ledger well too."
Ms.Feng curiously asked, "How much money does your uncle make on a round trip?"
Zhou Lijun finished the noodles in his bowl and said, "Mother, I’m just an accountant. Teacher Mo said that accountants must keep secrets, so you should ask Fourth Uncle about this matter."
Ms.Feng tapped her on the head, saying, "I was just asking in advance. Anyway, the ledger will have to be shown to your grandparents sooner or later."
"Then you’ll find out by then," Zhou Lijun replied as she got up with her bowl. "Mother, I bought some things for you, Father, and my younger brother and sister. I’ll find them and give them to you tomorrow. I’m going to wash up and get some sleep now."
Ms.Feng stood up, "Go find your clothes. I’ll go to the kitchen and check on the hot water for you. Even though it’s hot weather, you shouldn’t wash with cold water... This whole family of yours is too particular; bathing every day, I have no idea how much water that wastes."
Zhou Lijun gave her father a knowing look, then quickly ran off.
Zhou SiLang’s wife naturally cherished him. Unlike Manbao and the others, he had kept a package with him all along, which he had specifically put together.
Then, after taking a bath, he opened the package, placed a silver hairpin on Ms.Fang’s head, and lifting his son, asked, "Do you think your mother looks beautiful?"
Six, nodding emphatically, said in a baby voice, "Pretty!"
Ms.Fang blushed and scolded Zhou SiLang, "Aren’t you tired? Get some rest."
Zhou SiLang chuckled with a quiet laugh and agreed.
Manbao made her bed and threw herself onto it, happily flipping around a couple of times before turning off the light to enter the system.
She checked Teacher Mo’s new email and browsed the forum. Feeling relaxed in both body and mind, she soon became sleepy. Since she was back home, Manbao wasn’t in a hurry and logged out to sleep when she felt tired.
The next day, as soon as the time came, she woke up. However, she didn’t want to get out of bed, so she turned over and continued to lie with her eyes closed.
Eventually, she fell asleep again and was finally awakened by a knocking sound outside her door.
Manbao rubbed her eyes and opened the door, only to find it was broad daylight outside, and the sun was already high in the sky.
Two little tots were squatting outside her door, reaching up with small hands to keep knocking.
Seeing Manbao open the door, the two swiftly retracted their hands and turned to run away.
Manbao caught one with her hand and called out happily, "Five, Six, can you talk yet? Quick, call me ’little auntie’."
Five and Six, not recognizing Manbao anymore, began to cry loudly, attracting Ms.Fang.
Ms.Fang took both children into her arms and laughed at Manbao, "They can both talk now, they know how to call everyone in the family. Little aunt has been gone for three months; they probably don’t remember you anymore."
Ms.Fang coaxed them, "Don’t remember your little aunt? She used to give you sweet candy often."
Manbao couldn’t help but lament, "Their memory really is poor, isn’t it? I remember having a good memory when I was little."
Ms.Fang: "... Little aunt, few people have the kind of memory you do."
Since she was already up, there was no chance of lying down again. Manbao went inside to get dressed, then washed up and went to the front to have breakfast and distribute gifts to her family.
Zhou Dalang and crew had gone down to the fields early. The wheat there wasn’t fully ripe yet, so they weren’t in a hurry, merely harvesting two plots ready for reaping. As soon as the sun became scorching, they immediately stopped work and headed home.
The timing was perfect to have lunch and watch the gifts being given out.
