Chapter 604: Chapter 593 Wake Up (Additional updates for the book friend "セ祖灬﹎" who gave a reward)
Bai Shanbao only glanced once before lowering her head to wipe her face and hands, splashing the water onto her floral plants, and then she said, "Even if you’re rich, you’re not as rich as me."
Manbao snorted, also splashed the water in the basin, then turned and went back to her room.
After Bai Shanbao had finished combing her hair, she noticed that Bai Erlang across from her was still lazing in bed. She couldn’t help but knock on his screen, "The sun is about to rise, if you don’t get up now, the teacher will come with a stick."
Bai Erlang turned over and sluggishly burrowed under the covers, pretending not to hear.
As Manbao passed by, she overheard and stealthily pulled out a stick from the pile of firewood, sneaking up to his window to push it open.
Noticing this, Bai Shanbao immediately turned back, opened the window quietly for her, and then, feigning nonchalance, coughed lightly before walking out the door.
Manbao poked the stick inside, aiming for the bulge in the bedding and gave it a whack, but the blanket only moved slightly and then there was no movement at all.
Manbao paused, looked at the stick, and couldn’t help but switch from whipping to prodding, poking several times without a stir.
Seeing that Manbao wasn’t succeeding, Bai Shanbao couldn’t help but give the stick a nudge. This roused the continuously shifting Bai Erlang, who angrily threw off the covers and sat up, yelling, "Bai Shan, that’s enough——"
Seeing that Bai Shanbao wasn’t at his bedside, he followed the stick and turned his head to glare out the window. His expression involuntarily stiffened as he meekly and guiltily called out, "Teacher..."
Mr. Zhuang glanced at the stick in his hand, then at Bai Erlang, withdrew the stick, and said, "It’s broad daylight, aren’t you going to get up?"
Bai Erlang let out a soft "oh," and got out of bed.
Mr. Zhuang reached out to help him close the window and then turned to the two disciples standing with their heads lowered, poking them with the stick and saying, "Naughty. Since you have so much energy, both of you will be punished by writing five extra large characters today."
Bai Shanbao & Manbao: ......so busy!
But neither of them dared to resist and agreed with lowered heads.
Then Mr. Zhuang handed the stick to Daji, who was standing nearby, and walked away with his hands behind his back.
Bai Shanbao and Manbao sighed with relief, exchanged a glance, and then scattered to prepare for school and for morning lessons, respectively.
Bai Erlang, having dressed himself, yawned as he walked out from behind the screen and spoke listlessly to Bai Shanbao, "Just now I thought it was you hitting me, who would have thought it was the teacher; why didn’t you say something?"
Bai Shanbao: "...I’ll make sure to wake you tomorrow."
Bai Erlang nodded with a sigh, "Alright then."
"If you had read fewer storybooks and slept earlier last night, you wouldn’t have struggled to wake up this morning," Bai Shanbao remarked.
Bai Erlang sneakily looked outside before saying, "Keep your voice down, don’t let the teacher hear."
"I peeked outside before going to bed last night; the legitimate wife’s light was still on. So, the teacher definitely knows your light was on. Do you think the teacher doesn’t know you read storybooks at night?"
Bai Erlang frowned miserably, "Living with the teacher is the worst; nothing gets past him. Sigh, now that I think about it, my elder brother has it even better than I do."
"Is Dalang brother going to the capital to try for the Six Academies this year?"
"I don’t know."
Bai Shanbao looked down on him, "What do you know? He’s your own elder brother. You really don’t care enough, do you?"
Bai Erlang remained silent, deep in thought.
After breakfast, Bai Shanbao took a bag of snacks prepared by Aunt Rong and rode the carriage to the academy.
Daji saw her off to the gate and asked, "Young master, should I find a way to enter and take care of you?"
Bai Shanbao paused before realizing what he meant, and she laughed, "There’s no need, they might not be nice, but this is inside the academy, they don’t have the guts to beat me up."
Daji was still a bit worried; although the young master never mentioned it, he heard everything from Manbao’s and Mr. Zhuang’s conversations, and that’s how he knew about the targeting of his young master at the academy.
His only fear was that they would engage in a conflict within the academy, putting the young master at a disadvantage.
It would be a disadvantage for him to get into fights, given his young age.
Bai Shanbao stepped down from the carriage and nodded at Daji, "Don’t worry, there’s no need to tell Grandmother about this issue; I have my own ways to deal with it."
Bai Shanbao’s way of dealing with it was to also form a faction; he didn’t need many, just two people in class on his side would suffice.
Bai Shanbao, carrying her basket of books, took her place in the classroom. Wei Chen, who lived inside the academy, arrived even later than her.
Wei Chen habitually used the back entrance. Upon entering and seeing Bai Shanbao, he greeted with a smile, "Bai Dalang, you sure got here early."
The smile on Bai Shanbao’s face froze, and she tilted her head, asking, "Bai Dalang?"
"Yeah," Wei Chen sat beside her without any misgivings and said, "Weren’t you bragging yesterday about being an only child? That’s just like me."
But Bai Shanbao wasn’t accustomed to that title, which in her memory was usually reserved for her older cousin, "Just call me Bai Shan."
"That’s too distant; Bai Dalang is better." At least they were friends who had eaten at each other’s houses. Wei Chen settled in with familiarity, bumped her shoulder, and said, "Aren’t we friends anyway?"
Bai Shan took out a bag of snacks from her sleeve and placed it in Wei Chen’s hand, "Take this, friend, go back to your seat, I’m about to read the morning lesson."
Friends sure talk a lot.
Wei Chen, delighted with the snacks in his palm, exclaimed, "I didn’t expect Brother Bai to remember me, thanks a lot. It’s exactly what I needed since I didn’t have my morning meal."
Bai Shanbao was puzzled, "Won’t skipping breakfast harm your stomach?"
"Ah, it’s fine to miss it occasionally," Wei Chen waved it off nonchalantly, "I just overslept today; we can have an early lunch."
Bai Shanbao had never experienced skipping breakfast. Ever since she could remember, her grandmother had taught her that no matter the circumstances, one must not neglect one’s health, so having three meals a day was a must.
The most she would do is have snacks as her main meal, which inevitably led to being scolded and then punished for days without snacks.
Wei Chen took the snacks back to his seat. The students in the classroom glanced their direction, more or less subtly. Kang Xiaodong had just entered from outside, exchanged greetings with everyone, and with Bai Shanbao, before sitting down in front of Wei Chen.
He sniffed, turned his head towards Wei Chen’s snacks, and asked quietly, "Wei brother, did you get those delicious-looking snacks from the academy’s cafeteria?"
"No, they’re from Bai Dalang’s home."
Kang Xiaodong paused, "Bai Dalang?"
Wei Chen looked at him oddly, "That’s Bai Shan. Didn’t I see you greet her just now? You should be familiar, right?"
