Chapter 579 - 568: Flying a Kite

Chapter 579: Chapter 568: Flying a Kite

Manbao jumped down from the carriage, grabbed her kite, and ran onto the grass field. Bai Shanbao and Bai Erlang were not to be outdone, and within moments they were chasing and scrambling after her to claim the best spot.

Mr. Zhuang leisurely got out of the carriage, holding his kite and deliberately distanced himself from his three disciples, finding an open space to send his kite soaring.

Then, he tied the string to a rather large rock and sat down on the grass, watching his three disciples from a distance as they playfully struggled to get their kites into the air.

Naturally, flying a kite was only fun if you did it yourself, so Manbao refused the help of Zhou Silang and ran back and forth with her kite a couple of times. On the third attempt, just as a breeze blew against her, the kite was filled with wind and rose into the sky, and she quickly began pulling and releasing the string.

Bai Shanbao and Bai Erlang’s kites were also up in the air now.

The three of them pulled on their kite strings and shouted in excitement.

It was a splendid spring day, with flowers blooming everywhere. Thanks to the fine weather, many people came to Qixia Mountain for a spring outing and to fly kites.

Not long after their kites took to the sky, other people also got their kites up, and the various shapes of kites flying overhead were a delight to see.

So, Manbao and the others were not only watching their kites but the others’ as well.

And commenting on other people’s kites was an entertainment in itself.

Mr. Zhuang, seated on the grass, heard the chattering nearby, "Whose three big and ugly kites are those? Is that long one a worm? Isn’t it too scary?"

"I just want to know how that tiger kite can fly when it’s cut like that?"

"And that big one next to it is weird too, who would paint such a strange mountain on a kite?"

"Oh my, look, quick look, those three ugly kites are going higher and higher..."

"This... what a pity, if they were made prettier, such kites could be a commodity."

"These kites catch the wind quite well, I wonder if they’re selling the kite frames."

Mr. Zhuang supported himself with one hand on the grass, half-reclining and looking towards the sky, as if oblivious to the comments about his three disciples.

Manbao and her companions focused entirely on the kites in the sky and didn’t hear these remarks.

Plus, the kite strings in the air were so faint they were nearly invisible; aside from themselves and their friends, no one knew whose kites were whose.

Besides celebrating the beauty, the kite flying also became a contest of whose kite could fly the highest.

Manbao slowly let out a bit more string, tugged on it slightly, and when it was flying taut, she let out more string again. Soon enough, her kite soared the highest, her gaze dominating the rest with a bird’s eye view.

She was incredibly proud of herself.

Bai Shanbao and Bai Erlang also wanted to catch up to her, but whether their kite frames weren’t well made or their flying skills were just a bit worse, their kites could not surpass hers.

Bai Erlang couldn’t help but start running while pulling his string, tugging and tugging, trying to get it to fly higher.

But then his string got entangled with someone else’s in mid-air, and Bai Erlang let out a cry of alarm, and from a distance, he seemed to hear another cry as well.

Not wanting to lose his tiger kite, Bai Erlang shouted, "Whose kite is this? Pull it away quickly!"

A voice from a distance replied, "Whose ugly kite is this—"

Seeing that Bai Erlang was almost about to cry, Manbao and Bai Shanbao immediately handed their kites to Zhou Silang and Daji, rushing to help him.

But unraveling kite strings tangled in mid-air is difficult; however, they could slowly reel them back in, provided both parties reel back simultaneously.

Bai Shanbao turned to find the owner of the other kite, following the direction of the voice, only to see a group of people surrounding a young man.

The young man had a pair of scissors in hand, and just as Bai Shanbao was about to intervene, he expertly gave a cut and severed his string.

"It’s so unlucky to get tangled with such an ugly kite. If it were a pretty one, at least that would have been something," the voice carried from afar, but Bai Shanbao had no time to deal with him and quickly took out their scissors, saying to Bai Erlang, "He’s cut his kite off, you hurry and cut yours too."

Bai Erlang was forcefully tugging at the wooden rod entangled with the string, unwilling to let go.

The other kite, now free from the string, immediately soared into the air but got dragged down after fluttering up for a while due to the strings tangled together, almost colliding with Bai Erlang’s tiger.

Since both kites’ pull was now on Bai Erlang’s string, and with the uneven force applied, his tiger also began to wobble dangerously.

Luckily, Manbao was there to help; Bai Erlang was a big boy, otherwise, he would have been pulled off his feet by the kite.

Manbao, too, urged him, "Let’s cut it, if you can’t bear to lose it, we’ll help you look for it together."

"Where are we supposed to look for it?"

"Well, just around this area; we’ll head in the direction it went. We’ve got nothing else to do, and plenty of time, we’ll definitely find it."

Reassured by her words, Bai Erlang reluctantly agreed, taking the scissors and cutting his kite free as well.

Everyone watched as the two kites, tossed by the wind, rolled over for a bit, then fell towards the southeast direction.

The three of them tiptoed, made sure of the direction, and set off to search.

The young man also watched the two kites, and quickly identifying the owner of the tiger kite, approached them fuming, "Hey, I say, that ugly kite was yours, wasn’t it? You’ve made it so ugly, huh?"

Manbao responded, "Kites getting entangled is a matter of fate, why do you start off so offensively?"

"What fate? Your kite is so ugly, I don’t want any fate with you!"

Bai Erlang, feeling insulted over his tiger kite, pulled Manbao aside and said, "You think I want anything to do with your fate? Your kite is the ugly one."

"My kite is ugly? My kite is a beauty kite!"

"So it’s called a beauty kite? It almost made me throw up," Bai Erlang retorted. "Mine is a tiger kite; even your beauty gets panic-stricken at the sight of my tiger!"

"Nonsense, panic-stricken, it’s disgust, disgust!"

"No way, if not for being panic-stricken, why would you cut the kite string?"

The young man replied, "I was disgusted."

"My tiger was the one disgusted! Have you never seen a beauty before, to draw such an ugly one?"

Manbao and Bai Shanbao had already stepped aside; seeing that the young man’s friends weren’t chiming in, they, too, stood quietly and didn’t take Bai Erlang’s side.

Bai Erlang had a talent for arguing; after all, he’d spent years bickering with Manbao and Bai Shanbao, and he’d become quite adept at it.

The young man initially held his own, but eventually was bested by Bai Erlang, who left him fuming with anger, prompting the young man to roll up his sleeves and give Bai Erlang a shove.

Bai Erlang shoved back without hesitation.

"What are you doing?" the young man’s friends quickly gathered around.

Manbao and Bai Shanbao stepped forward, rolling up their sleeves and asked, "What are you doing?"
