Chapter 376: Chapter 365: Fight to Win
"And I’m not going the year after next, I’m going next year," Bai Shanbao said. "My grandmother mentioned that next year, before the Dragon Boat Festival, she wants to take me to Yizhou Prefecture to celebrate my grandaunt’s birthday. I’ll take you with me then."
Manbao hesitated and did not speak.
Bai Shanbao continued, "Yizhou Prefecture is much livelier than the county seat, and there are lots of fun things. The most important thing is, along the way, there are many plants you’ve never seen before. When the time comes, I’ll have Daji dig some up for you to play with."
This point obviously itched at Manbao’s heart, but was Manbao someone who would admit defeat so easily?
She hesitated only for a moment before shaking her head firmly, "No way, I’m going to be the Senior Sister!"
"Don’t you want to go to Yizhou Prefecture?"
Manbao was brimming with confidence, "I believe our farm will definitely make a lot of money. Whether I go a year earlier or a year later doesn’t make much difference, but becoming a junior is different," she hummed.
"Being the junior lasts a lifetime."
Even though she was itching to go, she could still discern what was more important.
Bai Shanbao got so angry that his face puffed up, "The teacher was considering me to be the Senior Brother!"
That was indeed true, so Manbao felt slightly guilty, but thinking that the teacher had asked them to decide on their own clearly meant that he hadn’t committed yet; otherwise, he wouldn’t be ’considering’ it.
Therefore, Manbao insisted, "I joined the sect before you, so I am the Senior Sister."
"I’m older than you!"
"I joined the sect before you though!"
Bai Shanbao retorted angrily, "I’m even better at reading than you are!"
Manbao clenched her fists and shouted, "But I still joined the sect before you!"
Bai Shanbao also clenched his fists and yelled, "But we started school at the academy on the same day!"
"Not true at all, I started a day before you," Manbao shouted, "Even a day earlier counts as earlier."
No one knew who threw the first punch, not even Bai Shanbao or Manbao could quite remember; they just found themselves scrapping as they argued.
When Zhou Dalang, who was digging holes for fruit trees on the mountain, and the others sensed something was wrong, the two children were rolling on the grass, fighting and yelling.
Zhou Dalang immediately dropped his hoe and raced down from the mountain. By the time he arrived, the situation had turned around; Manbao had bitten Bai Shanbao and managed to pin him down, brandishing her little fists threateningly, "If I’m saying I’m the Senior Sister, then I am the Senior Sister!"
Zhou Dalang immediately picked her up and helped Bai Shanbao to his feet. He was about to get angry at Manbao when he noticed there were several scratches on her face as well.
Zhou Dalang: ...
He separated the two children and, after composing himself, asked, "Why are you fighting?"
The two children glanced at each other, each snorted and then turned their heads away.
Zhou Dalang was at a loss with the two children, especially since they were being so uncooperative.
The two children hadn’t fought in a year, and this fight was particularly fierce, with the red marks on their faces being especially noticeable. Even though their nails were quite short, they were still sharp enough to do damage.
Bai Shanbao had a blue bump on his forehead, and the remaining three or four marks were from being scratched or pinched with fingernails.
On top of the two marks on Manbao’s face, there was also a palm print, clearly from Bai Shanbao hitting her with considerable force in his fury.
It wasn’t very noticeable at first, but now it stood out clearly.
Zhou Dalang didn’t know how to take the two children back, but they wouldn’t let him lead anyway and they just humphed and ran back home on their own.
Naturally, they walked back together, since there was some distance from the ridge to the village, but they kept a distance of three yards between them, and if the road had been wide enough, they would have wished to be worlds apart.
Daji followed silently behind the two children, escorting them home.
Halfway down the road, Bai Shanbao’s anger subsided a bit and that was when he noticed Daji. He was startled for a moment, then remembered that he should have had help!
Bai Shanbao, frustrated, turned and ran in front of Daji, kicking his leg and bellowing, "Why didn’t you help me?"
Manbao, who was originally staring at the wildflowers and grasses by the roadside, turned to look when she heard him running back and seeing him hitting Daji, felt displeased. She also ran back and pushed Bai Shanbao with a shove.
Caught off guard, Bai Shanbao fell to the ground.
Manbao, hands on hips and looking down, yelled at him, "You have the nerve to bully Daji, then have the nerve to fight me again!"
Bai Shanbao’s eyes reddened in an instant, he burst into tears, feeling utterly aggrieved while still yelling at Manbao, "If you hadn’t bitten me, how could you possibly beat me? You cheated!"
"I did not! You could bite me too; I didn’t stop you from biting!"
"What’s it to you if I hit Daji? He’s my family’s servant."
Manbao, with hands on hips, countered, "Daji is also my friend, and I won’t let you bully him. Humph, you’re just sore because you lost and now you’re taking it out on Daji."
Bai Shanbao cried and raged, leaping up from the ground and rushing at Manbao, and the two children instantly tangled into a scuffle once more.
Daji watched as his young master pinned Miss Manbao beneath him, his hand poised to scratch her. He hesitated over whether to intervene.
He remembered the first time he saw the young master and Miss Man fight; he had immediately separated them, only to have them both crying. Later they told the Old Madam, who then said to him that if the two children fought again, as long as it wasn’t anything serious, he shouldn’t interfere and let them fight it out!
So after that, Daji hadn’t interfered in their fights, and they usually made up after a while, which had nothing to do with him.
But why was it involving him this time?
Seeing that the children were about to scratch each other’s faces again, Daji had to step in to separate them.
Manbao and Bai Shanbao, still blocked from each other, each gave a kick in frustration. Missing, they grudgingly separated.
Bai Shanbao said, "When I see the teacher, I’ll definitely complain to him about how you bullied me."
"I will complain too!"
Bai Shanbao, still angry, replied, "Since you claim to be the Senior Sister, you should be more lenient towards me."
Manbao thought for a moment and agreed, "Fine, I’ll let you do the complaining this time!"
Bai Shanbao snorted and turned his head away.
Manbao declared, "You are the Junior Brother, you should listen to me."
"I won’t listen if you’re wrong!"
"Of course, didn’t our teacher say that even if it’s our parents who are wrong, we shouldn’t listen to them either?"
Bai Shanbao felt slightly better and made a request, "As the Senior Sister, you have to give a gift to your Junior Brother."
"I gave you a slingshot," Manbao said.
"That doesn’t count; I wasn’t your Junior Brother then."
Manbao became worried, "Then what gift do you want?"
Seeing that the two children were instantly discussing which gifts to give and had naturally come back together, Daji, who was again left trailing behind, thought: ...
Really, the hearts of children are even more difficult to understand than those of women. They were fighting so fiercely just now, and suddenly they’ve changed this fast?
When they returned to the village, the two were so chummy they walked hand in hand. As the newly appointed Senior Sister, Manbao considerately escorted Bai Shanbao back to the Bai Family across the river before cheerfully heading home herself.
