Chapter 310: Chapter 299: Pain and Regret

Then she fixed the fishing net firmly, ensuring that the trapped birds could not escape.

Keke, however, said, "Host, there’s a bird here that’s not of the right species. Do you want to collect that one too?"

Following Keke’s direction, Manbao found a small bird with blue feathers; its beak also looked different from the other birds nearby.

Manbao thought it was very pretty.

She carefully reached into the net to take it out and asked Keke, "What’s its name?"

"I don’t know." Keke paused before adding, "A species even I don’t know is usually worth a lot of points."

Manbao’s eyes sparkled, and she handed the bird to Keke, who then stowed it away. By then, Datou had already charged over with others in tow.

When Bai Shanbao went to the Zhou family’s house, most of them were still asleep. Luckily, in a farmer’s house, the front door is generally not locked unless it is night or no one is home.

Bai Shanbao also knew where Datou’s room was and sneaked right in to find him.

Once Datou was up, Second Son naturally woke up too, and Daya and Erya, who lived in the neighboring room, followed suit.

Seeing the birds struggling in the net, they were all so excited, "You guys are amazing, catching so many."

Bai Shanbao proudly said, "If we change spots, we can surely catch even more."

Datou brought a basket with a lid on his sister’s advice.

They carefully took the birds out one by one and placed them into the basket, counting as they went. Even Daji was surprised; they had caught twelve in total.

After they had captured all the birds, they gathered up the net and saw the wheat on the ground that had been eaten away. Datou praised them foolishly, "Sister, you’re incredible, how did you find a spot with wheat like this?"

Manbao: "We scattered it ourselves."

Datou blinked and asked, "Sister, where did you get the wheat spikes from?"

He glanced over at the nearby field and widened his eyes, "You didn’t take it from Dog Egg’s field, did you?"

Manbao also turned to look at the adjacent wheat field and her eyes lit up, "How could I have forgotten, we could just go to our own wheat field to catch them, then we wouldn’t have to take wheat from home."

Now Daya and Erya’s eyes were wide open as they exclaimed, "Sister, did you take the wheat spikes from home?"

Seeing her nod, the four children exchanged glances and immediately said, "Sister, you can’t tell Grandpa."

They didn’t know if their sister would be punished, but they knew for sure they would be scolded.

Manbao had no intention of telling her father, so she quickly agreed.

They gathered their things and moved to a new spot.

In the fields where wheat had not been harvested, there were birds; in those where the wheat was cut but not yet taken home, there were even more.

With Datou and the others’ help, their speed was quicker, and soon they had set up the net in the field, choosing a spot where they saw a lot of birds flying as they entered.

They propped up the sticks, then quietly waited for the birds to land.

Datou felt the wait was too long; seeing the birds eat so much wheat in his field was quite painful.

But the sister insisted on waiting a bit longer, so as not to spook the birds too soon.

Staying out in the field was not as comfortable as being under the trees, sweating profusely under the sun, Bai Shan suggested softly to Manbao, "Next time let’s hide under trees."

Manbao also felt miserable hiding in the field and nodded. They would just have to bring some wheat there next time.

The net fell quickly; everyone rushed up to secure it. Seeing the birds caught inside, they all laughed with joy.

When Old Zhou and the others came by carrying baskets after their noon nap, they saw a group of children hiding under the trees, pulling strings. The net fell, and a flock of birds fluttered their wings and flew away, while another flock flapped helplessly, trapped in the net.

Old Zhou smiled as he approached them and was about to speak when he noticed the scattered wheat spikes on the ground.

A frown creased his brow as his smile slowly faded.

The six kids, too engrossed to notice the approaching adults, were excitedly staking out their corners of the net, reaching in to grab the trapped birds, and carefully placing them in the basket.

By the time they had stuffed all the birds into the basket and looked up, they saw a group of adults from the Zhou residence watching them.

Zhou SiLang laughed heartily, sneaked a peek at the birds in the basket, and then exclaimed happily, "Manbao, you really did it, you actually caught them!"

Zhou Dalang, feeling he could not stay quiet any longer, asked, "Where did all these wheat spikes come from?"

Manbao demurred, "We found them."

Old Zhou reminded himself not to get angry and asked sternly, "Where did you find them?"

"From our own field."

Zhou Sanlang said, "Youngest sister, that’s not finding, that’s taking!"

"No, it’s not," Manbao replied, "We picked up a lot of wheat spikes this morning, and didn’t we just put them in the field?"

Junior Ms. Qian quickly changed the subject, "Manbao, how many birds did you catch?"

"Lots and lots," Manbao bubbled with excitement, pulling Junior Ms. Qian to look at the birds in the basket.

Old Zhou also took the opportunity to look and his expression softened slightly.

Zhou SiLang swallowed and said, "There must be one for everyone, right?"

Of course, it was more than that since they had set up nets four times, in four different locations, and the basket was nearly full.

Manbao had already discussed with Bai Shan, and they had agreed to split the catch. Half would stay with the Zhou family to eat later that night, and the other half would be taken to the Bai family to have their cook prepare them immediately.

What could Old Zhou do? It was surely his beloved daughter who had brought the wheat, and he certainly couldn’t take his frustration out on his grandkids, could he?

And it was impossible to be mad at Young Master Bai, so he could only sigh and wave his hand, signaling Junior Ms. Qian to take them home.

To deal with the birds they had caught.

As for Datou and the four, of course, it was back to fieldwork for them, having been so bold as to use wheat as bait. Looking at the wheat on the ground, Old Zhou guessed it made up about two or three bowls of flour?

Enough to bake several pancakes.

Old Zhou regretfully picked up the almost pecked-clean wheat from the ground.

Manbao then consoled her father, "Dad, when we come back tonight, I’ll treat you to roasted bird."

Old Zhou’s face contorted with conflicted emotions but he replied with relief, "Okay."

Manbao left with Junior Ms. Qian, pulling Bai Shan along as they went.

Daji quickly followed with the tools, thinking that the young master was not tired of the game yet, so these items would definitely be needed again.

Upon reaching the Zhou residence, Junior Ms. Qian found some string, tied up one bird after another, and after securing them, counted out half to put into the basket for Daji.

Manbao then returned to the Bai family with Bai Shan, planning to find the cook in the kitchen together.
