Chapter 206: Chapter 195: Making Money
Manbao and Bai Shanbao placed the box they had carried in front of themselves before scrambling to grab their own cashboxes.
Bai Erlang also had his servant set down his box, then ran over to snatch up his cashbox.
The three each claimed a corner and then sat down.
Bai Erlang opened his box and then looked towards Bai Shanbao and Manbao. He quickly noticed something was amiss and pointed at Bai Shanbao’s box, asking, "What about all those toys you had before?"
"I’m not selling those!" Bai Shanbao said.
Bai Erlang was taken aback, his eyes widened as he exclaimed angrily, "You’re lying!"
"No, I’m not!" Bai Shanbao said, "Do you know what a deal is? It’s only a deal if both sides agree."
Manbao backed him up, "Forced buying is what bad guys do."
Bai Erlang pouted, feeling that something was wrong with what he said, but he couldn’t pinpoint exactly what. He certainly wasn’t as eloquent as Bai Shanbao, plus they were outnumbering him.
So, he felt unhappy for a moment.
Manbao then asked him, "Are you going to play or not?"
"I’ll play!"
Bai Erlang viciously opened both of his large boxes and boasted, "I have more toys than both of you."
Manbao curiously leaned in to look, then realized that he had several identical toys. Among them, her favorite was a toy made of several golden rings linked together, which she had also seen in Bai Shanbao’s toy box.
Manbao pointed to those rings and asked, "Are these made of gold?"
"No," Bai Erlang scratched his head and said, "I don’t know what they’re made of, but definitely not gold."
Manbao breathed a sigh of relief, "That was close, that was close. If they were made of gold, they’d be so expensive. I want to buy it from you, will you sell it?"
"It’s a seven-link chain, not fun at all," Bai Erlang said, having many such toys, including seven- and nine-link chains. His father had bought him some, his mother, his big brother, and his uncles had all bought him different types.
Seeing that Manbao wanted to buy one, he passed it to her without a second thought and waved his hand, "Here, take it."
Manbao asked, "How much?"
How would Bai Erlang know how much it was?
He never asked the price when buying things, let alone when selling them.
He looked at Manbao innocently and said, "You decide?"
Manbao was also at a loss and said, "I don’t know how much a seven-link chain costs."
So both of them turned to Bai Shanbao.
Bai Shanbao thought for a moment and said, "Give him nine copper coins."
Seeking advice sincerely, Manbao asked, "Why nine coins?"
"Because nine is the largest single-digit number, and since it’s used, it’s second-hand, so nine coins is already quite expensive for it."
Bai Erlang nodded in agreement and stretched out his hand to Manbao, "Give me nine coins."
Compared to Bai Erlang, Manbao considered herself a worldly child; after all, she had over a year of business experience. So after thinking it over, she felt that nine coins wasn’t too much and counted out nine coins for him from her cashbox, then placed the attractive seven-link chain into her own box.
Bai Erlang was more interested in Bai Shanbao’s toys, but after looking, he found that most of what Bai Shanbao had brought out he already owned, and the few he didn’t have were ones he didn’t like much.
He then demanded Bai Shanbao bring out his new toys.
Naturally, Bai Shanbao refused, insisting on not selling by force.
Manbao had just spent money, and after looking over, she found they both had many toys she had never seen or played with before, and she wanted to buy them all.
She glanced at her cashbox and decisively began promoting her own toys to both of them.
Bai Shanbao wasn’t very enthusiastic because he often played with Manbao and had seen most of her toys.
Adhering to the principle that it’s good to save money for big investments, Bai Shanbao insisted on not spending.
Bai Erlang glanced over and was about to look away when he spotted a grass dragonfly in her box. He picked it up and asked, "How do you make this?"
"I don’t know, my Fourth Brother made it." Manbao remembered something, searched her box, and quickly found an even prettier and sturdier bamboo dragonfly. She said delightedly, "Look, this one was made by my Second Brother."
Even Bai Shanbao couldn’t help but take a few extra looks, to say nothing of Bai Erlang. His eyes lit up as he asked, "How much for this one?"
Manbao thought it over and felt that a bamboo dragonfly certainly couldn’t be worth as much as a seven-link chain, so she said, "Five coins?"
Bai Erlang found it very cheap and counted out five coins from his cashbox for her.
Manbao was happy, and so was Bai Erlang, but Bai Shanbao was a bit unhappy. He pursed his lips and pushed his toys closer to Manbao, asking, "Do you like any of these?"
Manbao looked down to choose and quickly picked out a toy, so the two traded happily as well.
Because Bai Shanbao and Bai Erlang’s toys had a great deal of overlap, they weren’t very interested in each other’s offerings, so the trades they made between them could be counted on one hand.
In contrast, Manbao’s toys differed significantly from theirs, and despite Bai Shanbao’s initial disinterest, he soon couldn’t resist picking out several toys that he had never played with much.
Of course, the one who spent the most was Manbao.
She never was one to be frugal, and although she felt pain watching her money go, she couldn’t resist buying things she liked.
So, she purchased a vast collection of toys from Bai Erlang and Bai Shanbao. Although she had money coming in, she spent a lot as well.
The copper coins in her cashbox visibly dwindled.
Manbao felt that this couldn’t go on, so after pondering for a moment, she placed her satchel in front of her and reached inside, pulling out a handful of candies wrapped in a very common light grey wax paper. Inside, there were candies of various colors.
Bai Erlang’s eyes shone uncontrollably.
He knew that Manbao had some very tasty and pretty candy, but she was stingy, only ever sharing with Bai Shanbao and not him.
Now, seeing her take them out, he couldn’t help but swallow a mouthful of saliva.
Manbao asked them, "Do you want to buy some?"
Even Bai Shanbao couldn’t resist the urge to buy, "How much are they?"
"I sell them for one coin each to others, but I’ll give you two for one coin." She was saving on the trip to town and also cutting out the middleman of Fifth Brother.
Bai Shanbao and Bai Erlang misunderstood her meaning, thinking it was because they were friends.
The two nodded without hesitation and said, "Buy, I want to buy a lot."
Manbao kept pulling candies from her satchel until all the candies she had repackaged from Keke’s backpack were gone.
There was a pile of candies in front of her.
Bai Erlang had already forcefully dragged the candies to his side, and Bai Shanbao also hurried to grab some, only having time to glance at Manbao’s bag: Could it really hold so much stuff? It didn’t seem that bulgy just a moment ago.
Bai Shanbao soon had no more chance to ponder because Bai Erlang was too domineering. After grabbing most of the candies, he even tried to wrest some from in front of Bai Shanbao.
The two almost came to blows over it.
In the end, everyone counted the candies they had snatched, two candies making one pair, and paid Manbao accordingly.
As a result, the money Bai Shanbao and Bai Erlang had earned from Manbao quickly ended up back in her cashbox, with Bai Erlang, who had grabbed many candies, even having to pay an extra thirty or so coins.
Bai Erlang peeled a candy and put it in his mouth, the sweetness satisfying him, so he decided to put all the candies into his box and stop playing with them.
He wanted to go and hide the candies.
