Chapter 1003: Chapter 982: A Delightful Conversation (An extra Chapter dedicated to the reward from "Strive for Progress Every Day")
Yin Huo wiped the corners of his mouth with a handkerchief, closed the bamboo tube with a lid, and when he looked up, he met Bai Erlang’s widened eyes.
Bai Erlang glanced at him, then sniffed the medicinal smell lingering in the air and asked with a pained face, "You’re just drinking it like that? Isn’t it bitter?"
Yin Huo replied indifferently, "I’m already used to it."
Bai Erlang rummaged through his clothes and took out a purse. He picked out a piece of candy from it and offered it to Yin Huo, "Do you want some sweet to take the edge off?"
Yin Huo glanced at the candy in his hand, accepted it, unwrapped it, ate it, and then asked, "I’ve never had candy this sweet before; where did you buy it?"
"Bought by Manbao, she’s got a large jar of it. But she doesn’t like sweets much, so she’s basically divided it among us," Bai Erlang thought for a moment and then said, "If you like it, I’ll ask her for some to give to you."
Bai Erlang didn’t concentrate too much on that matter; he turned his head and spoke to Bai Shan, "Do you think if I kneel down as soon as I get home, my tutor might not beat me?"
Bai Shan responded, "You could try."
"Then, where do you think it’s best to kneel?"
Bai Shan pondered for a moment, "In the study room, I guess. The tutor must be in the study room at this hour. With the sun so fierce, you could be sunbaked within moments if you kneeled in the courtyard."
Bai Erlang hesitated, "What do you think of faking some misery then? Just like in those storybooks. Kneeling in the courtyard, some rain falling from the sky or something, would look quite pitiful."
"...To be so careless with your own body, I think the tutor might get even angrier and beat you once more," Bai Shan said, "Besides, where could we find rain for you at this moment?"
"How come the heroes in the storybooks always have it so easy? I’ve read several of those, and it starts raining or snowing the moment they kneel, never failing."
Yin Huo couldn’t help asking, "What kind of storybooks are you reading?"
"Oh, you know, ’How Deep is Love?’, ’Deep Resentment in the Harem.’ There are so many; all collected by Manbao. Do you want to read them?"
Before Bai Shan could prevent it, he could only look at Yin Huo skeptically, "You’re not strong enough; can you read such storybooks?"
Yin Huo declared, "A storybook is still a book, after all. I have nothing else to do at home anyway. Reading books takes energy too, so I might as well read storybooks."
"Wrong!" Bai Erlang raised his uninjured left hand and said, "Reading books takes much more energy than reading storybooks. You have to think when reading books, but storybooks require no such effort."
"That’s because you choose storybooks that don’t require thinking. Try reading ’Unsolved Cases and Doubt.’"
"Never mind that. Reading books is already straining enough. Why would I want to trouble myself during my free time?"
Yin Huo watched the bantering between the two brothers, completely engrossed. This was the first time he had ever seen such an interaction mode, and for a moment, he was utterly fascinated.
The three in the carriage forgot about time, but those beneath did not.
Yin Family’s servant wiped the sweat from his forehead, looked up at the sun, and realized that the young master had been inside for half an hour. The students from the Imperial Academy and carriages had all left. Only a few stragglers from the academy were seen leaving sporadically.
Fushou checked the time and tugged at Changshou, saying, "What are the young masters talking about inside the carriage? We should go back; the family will be worried."
Changshou hesitated and then approached the carriage from the Bai Family, bowed deeply, and said softly, "Young master, it’s been half an hour; the Old Madam is waiting at home."
Only then did the three inside the carriage realize much time had passed. Bai Shan said to Yin Huo, "You should go back. I’ll bring the medicine over tomorrow."
Yin Huo nodded and got off the carriage.
After watching the Bai Family’s carriage leave, Yin Huo then supported himself by holding Changshou’s hand to board their own carriage, saying, "Let’s go, home."
As soon as Yin Huo entered the door, Eldest Sister Yin, with a flurry of younger sisters, hurriedly met him from the inner courtyard. Upon seeing him, she glared at the servants behind him and scolded angrily, "Where have you taken the person to fetch? Don’t you know that the family is worried?"
Changshou and the other servants knelt on the ground in a rush.
Yin Huo was indifferent, turned around, and handed the still-carried book basket to the kneeling Changshou, who immediately scrambled up to receive it.
Only then did Yin Huo ask Eldest Sister Yin, "When did eldest sister arrive?"
Eldest Sister Yin softened her voice when facing Yin Huo, taking hold of his arm, "I came before lunch, thinking you were not at home and no one was there to accompany grandmother to eat; she would be lonely, so I came."
She paused and then asked, "Little brother, I heard that you sent something to Changqing Alley yesterday?"
Since the Bai Family lived in Changqing Alley, their only connection with Changqing Alley was now the Bai Family. Yin Huo nodded and explained softly, "Eldest sister, I wasn’t quarreling with him. Our family was wrong before, and that’s why I thought of sending some things over. Didn’t grandmother always say, ’Better to resolve enmity than harbor it’?"
"They just accepted like that?"
Yin Huo nodded, a faint smile emerging on his face, "Yes, so we’ve become friends. I’m late today because we were talking."
Eldest Sister Yin couldn’t help but become frustrated, barely holding back her displeasure, "Little brother, you’re being fooled by them. They surely know your identity, and they are just trying to ingratiate themselves with you."
As if he hadn’t heard, Yin Huo withdrew his hand from Eldest Sister Yin and headed toward the main courtyard.
Although Eldest Sister Yin wasn’t too pleased, she knew her brother was always this way; sometimes he didn’t listen to anyone. It seemed as if he shut the whole world outside, with nothing anyone said ever reaching his ears.
She wondered if he was truly unwell or just pretending.
Eldest Sister Yin followed suit.
Yin Huo ignored all his sisters along the way and went straight to Old Madam Yin’s courtyard to greet her.
Seeing his return, Old Madam Yin breathed a sigh of relief and, taking his hand, asked, "Why are you so late today?"
Yin Huo replied, "I spoke a few words with friends, and before I knew it, time had passed."
Old Madam Yin, surprised and delighted, inquired, "You’ve made friends, with which family’s child?"
Yin Huo said, "Just with my classmate Bai Shan, and his Junior Brother and Senior Sister."
Old Madam Yin nodded smilingly, "Good, good, a misunderstanding turned into a friendship. From now on, you must get along well with people and try not to argue so easily."
Yin Huo nodded.
Eldest Sister Yin interjected, "Grandmother, what kind of friends are those? They are of no rank, probably buttering up to our little brother because he is born of a noble family and naive, that’s why they’re deliberately being nice."
"Nonsense," Old Madam Yin glared at her and said, "Bai Family are descendants of a meritorious successor; how can they be considered of no rank?"
Old Madam Yin, holding Yin Huo’s hand, said cheerfully, "Since they are your friends, have them over for a meal when we host a gathering at home. Also, if he needs your help with anything, come back and tell grandmother. I’ll help you arrange it."
Yin Huo obediently nodded and said, "Grandmother, I am going to my room now."
"Go ahead, go ahead. The wind will pick up in the evening; you need not come over. After eating and resting a bit, remember to drink your medicine."
Yin Huo acknowledged and, after making his bow, turned and left.
