Chapter 1001: Chapter 980: Taking the Initiative to Seek Out

Bai Shan put away the medicine container and, during the break between classes, went to ask Peng Zhiru and Lu Xiaofu, "Do you know Zhang Jinghao?"

Peng Zhiru and Lu Xiaofu were taken aback for a moment before shaking their heads, "Never heard of him, is he a student at our National Academy?"

"No, he’s from the Highest Institute."

"Oh, from the Highest Institute, I’ve only heard of Feng Chenxiang and Ren Ke, not too familiar with the others. What about him?"

Bai Shan shook his head, "Nothing, just asking."

After a pause, Peng Zhiru said, "If you want to inquire about someone, it’s best to ask the other students in the class. They are mostly here by imperial grace and know a lot of people."

Bai Shan nodded but did not just ask anyone. The students at the National Academy were much more arrogant than those at the Prefecture School. He wasn’t close with them, and it wouldn’t be appropriate to probe when the relationship was superficial. He had no intention of asking them.

However, during the lunch break, Bai Shan went to have lunch and happened to walk with Yin Huo. He asked him, "Do you know Zhang Jinghao?"

Yin Huo shook his head with a bewildered face, "Who is he?"

"Nobody," since he didn’t know, Bai Shan said, "Let’s go, time to eat."

Yin Huo then pursed his lips.

Bai Shan got his meal and sat down with Yin Huo. Other students from different classes who came to eat were stunned.

Liu Huan, holding his meal, almost spilled his food on a classmate in front of him.

He looked and looked again, and finally couldn’t hold back, sat down beside Bai Shan with his own meal, and then stared at Yin Huo sitting diagonally across from him.

Yin Huo looked up at him, then silently lowered his head to eat.

Liu Huan nudged Bai Shan carefully and whispered, "Hey, what’s the deal with you two, you... made up?"

Bai Shan said indifferently, "We never had a fight, it was his sister who misunderstood."

Liu Huan was stunned, "So you forgave his sisters?"

Bai Shan looked up, "No, but what does that have to do with him?"

Bai Shan said, "He brought something to our house yesterday." So he generously separated that from them.

Liu Huan was dumbstruck. He said blankly, "Back when his sister cornered me, he also brought me something..."

Across the table, Yin Huo couldn’t help but grip his chopsticks tightly.

Bai Shan nodded, knowing that the outcome was probably not good, so he didn’t continue in that vein but changed the subject, "Do you know Zhang Jinghao from the Highest Institute?"

Liu Huan tilted his head to think for a moment, then shook his head, "Don’t know him, who is that?"

Bai Shan just nodded, "How many people from the Highest Institute do you know?"

"Quite a few. Han Hao, Lang He, Jiao Yun are all quite famous, what’s up?"

"Nothing much, so no one’s heard of Zhang Jinghao? Help me ask around."

"No problem," Liu Huan agreed readily, patted his chest, and then looked at Yin Huo, who was quietly eating across from him. He cleared his throat but still couldn’t resist leaning over to ask, "Hey, is your crying really because of an illness and not because you are spoiled?"

Yin Huo raised his head to look at him, the corners of his eyes slightly red.

Afraid that Yin Huo would start crying and bring trouble upon himself, Liu Huan picked up his meal and ran off.

Bai Shan cast a disdainful glance at him and then lowered his head to continue eating.

After dinner, Bai Shan wandered around the canteen and found Feng Zongping hiding away in a corner, dining with a couple of close friends.

"Senior Feng," Bai Shan greeted with a bow. "I’m looking to inquire about someone."

Feng Zongping smiled and asked, "Who is it?"

"Zhang Jinghao from the Highest Institute."

"Zhang Jinghao?" Feng Zongping thought for a moment, not remembering anyone by that name. He turned to Yun Xinjue and Yi Ziyang, "Have any of you heard of him?"

Yun Xinjue replied irritably, "If you haven’t heard of him, we’re even less likely to have."

Yi Ziyang said, "The Highest Institute has over fifteen hundred students, who can remember that many?"

Realizing his search had reached a dead end, Bai Shan nodded his understanding and thanked them.

Feng Zongping quickly stopped him to ask, "What do you want with him?"

"Oh, nothing important, just some matters to discuss this afternoon. You seniors go ahead and eat, I’m going to take a stroll outside."

And while strolling, he ended up making his way to the Highest Institute. Bai Erlang was also having his meal in a canteen, not far from where Bai Shan had dined.

Because his right hand was wrapped up so tightly and was painful, he had specially requested a spoon and was now clumsily scooping up his rice to eat.

Ren Ke and Qiao Tao sat beside him, laughing as they ate and watched him struggle. Many of his classmates had gathered around, some who had finished eating fast didn’t leave, but leaned against the table, teasing him. "Tell us, Bai Cheng, how did you get that injury? You didn’t wrap it up yourself to avoid doing homework, did you?"

"That’s impossible, didn’t you see his eyes were red early in the morning?"

"The doctor even checked it himself. As soon as he pressed down, that anguished cry and the tears that shot out – there’s no way it was fake."

Fuming, Bai Erlang poked at his rice, took a bite, then said, "Laugh all you want, huh, nobody will escape from this in the future."

Ren Ke lifted his eyelid and said, "You still haven’t told us, how did you get beaten, and who did it?"

"Who else could it be? It’s someone from his family. Aside from his elder brother, it’s either his teacher, Senior Sister, or Senior Brother... It’s not a beating on the palm of the hand... I don’t think it was his elder brother; it must have been his teacher, Senior Brother is good!"

Annoyed, Bai Erlang lifted his eyelid and said, "Who are you calling Senior Brother..."

Bai Erlang spotted Bai Shan standing by the table, swallowed his words, and hastily asked, "What are you doing here? Is the teacher still angry?"

Bai Shan looked around and asked, "Which one is Zhang Jinghao?"

Bai Erlang’s scalp tingled, "What do you want with him? I already told you I won’t deal with him anymore."

Bai Shan glanced at him and said, "I didn’t ask you."

A classmate pointed to someone in the distance and said, "Over there."

Bai Shan followed their direction, got up, and started to walk over when Bai Erlang quickly dropped his spoon and grabbed him with his still-functional left hand. "What are you doing?"

"I don’t like the sisters of Yin Huo, so of course, I won’t do what they do. I’m going to have a chat with Zhang Jinghao, you keep eating," Bai Shan brushed off his left hand. "Oh, by the way, Manbao also said you were right last night, since we’re both going to buy horses, it’s better to buy from a classmate. It’s cheaper and more convenient. It works out well for both sides, such a good deal."

But the look on Bai Shan’s face didn’t make Bai Erlang think it was a good thing at all.

Evidently, Bai Erlang didn’t have the power to stop Bai Shan. He could only sit at the table and watch him approach Zhang Jinghao.

Bai Erlang felt like crying.

The classmates around him sensed something wasn’t quite right and crowded onto a long bench next to him, whispering, "What’s going on, why is your Senior Brother going to find Zhang Jinghao?"

"And he doesn’t seem to have good intentions."

Feng Chenxiang, who had been silently eating on the side, finished his meal and looked up casually, "See, I wasn’t wrong, was I? Zhang Jinghao is no good, you wouldn’t listen, and isn’t your beating somehow related to Zhang Jinghao?"
