THE LOST HEIRESS RETURNS AFTER DIVORCE
Chapter 21: Alcohol-fueled recklessness

Chapter 21: Alcohol-fueled recklessness

"Don’t you have a job, instead of following me aroundddd?"

Caius met her eyes then, the spin of the pen slowing. "I wouldn’t be here if you signed the papers like you said you would."

Heather took off Sheng’s suit jacket and tossed it onto the desk. She didn’t want to be anywhere near Caius right now.

"What papers? I never promised to sign anything."

"You said you’d turn a blind eye. Remember?"

Heather squinted at him, her mind was fuzzy from the alcohol. His voice was always so calm and deep that it was hard to tell if he was serious or joking.

"I sssaid maybe," she muttered. "W-what right do you have breaking in hereee?" She hiccupped.

Caius stood up slowly and began walking toward her. As he came closer, Heather instinctively stepped back until she felt the door behind her.

"Are you playing games with me, little piggy?" he asked quietly.

Heather’s expression shifted. She closed her eyes for a moment, trying not to explode. "Don’t call me that."

"It’s your nickname."

"It’s not. I hate it."

He leaned closer, eyes locked on hers, his tone still quiet. Her eyelids drooped a little as she tried to focus through the haze.

"You don’t get to choose your nickname, do you? Little piggy."

Her face twisted with frustration. "I hate you."

Caius exhaled slowly, still staring at her. Then he moved even closer.

"Then why," he said in a low voice, "does that make me want you more?"

Heather didn’t flinch. Instead, she leaned in too.

"Because you’re an idiot."

His face was now dangerously close. She pressed her hand to his chest, thinking she would push him away. But he didn’t budge. His arms were on either side of her head, his body heavy, unmoving.

And his chest... damn, it was firm beneath her hand. She pressed against it a little harder, confused by how solid and warm it felt.

To her surprise, Caius didn’t move. He was just watching her, still and quiet. Her fingers curled slightly, dragging lightly over his shirt.

She didn’t know why she was doing it. She wasn’t thinking anymore, the alcohol had taken over. She began fumbling with the buttons of his shirt, slowly undoing them, until her hand met his skin.

He still didn’t stop her.

Instead, he leaned in again. His lips hovered near hers, breath warm and teasing. One hand gripped the back of the couch near her legs.

Heather wasn’t thinking straight, she was drunk. But Caius—he was sober. And yet, he didn’t stop.

Knock. Knock.

"Heather?" Penny’s voice called from outside.

Caius didn’t move. Instead, he leaned in and pressed his lips onto hers, kissing her hard. The kiss was deep, taking her breath and any sense of reason she had left. His lips moved slowly at first, then with more need, like he’d waited for this.

The doorknob jiggled.

With a low growl, Caius broke the kiss only long enough to slam the door shut and lock it.

"What the—Heather, open up!" Penny shouted.

Heather gasped softly, but Caius kissed her again. His hands wrapped around her waist. His tongue moved against hers with purpose.

She pulled at his belt, unclasping it with a loud metallic click.

Without a second thought, Caius scooped her onto the desk, swiping everything off it. Papers, pens, even the suit jacket—all scattered to the floor.

Penny’s voice grew louder. "Heather? I’m serious!"

Heather didn’t hear her. Her hands had found Caius’s back, and her nails were already pressing into his skin.

...

Penny tapped Manager Sheng on the shoulder as he was talking to someone.

"Manager Sheng," she said urgently, "I can’t get to Heather. I left her outside her office to take a call, and now she’s not answering. The door’s locked. I’m worried."

He excused himself and turned to her. "Maybe she wants to be alone after what happened tonight."

"No. She locked the door after I came back. She’s not saying anything. That’s not like her."

He sighed. "So what do you want me to do?"

"Can I get a spare key?"

"You’re worried over nothing."

"Please. I just want to know she’s okay."

Before he could respond, another voice chimed in.

"What’s going on?" Lauren asked, clearly eavesdropping.

Penny glared at her, but Manager Sheng answered. "Penny’s worried about Heather."

"Why?" Lauren asked.

"It’s nothing," Penny snapped.

"Well, have you seen Caius?" Lauren looked around. "I can’t find him anywhere."

"We don’t know," Manager Sheng said quickly. "The spare’s in my office," he added. "Let’s go."

"I’m coming too," Lauren said.

"Why?" Penny asked sharply. "You don’t like her."

"I want to see if she’s with Caius."

"Of course you do," Penny muttered under her breath.

...

Bang. Bang.

"Caius! Are you in there?" Lauren yelled.

Caius raised his head up. He recognized that voice.

"Don’t stop," Heather whispered against his mouth.

"Why would Caius be in there?" Penny asked.

"Because Heather can be a whore," Lauren said coldly.

"Her? Or you?" Penny replied sharply.

"What did you just say to me?"

"Penny didn’t say anything," Sheng interrupted, trying to keep the peace.

Lauren sneered, then said loudly, "She didn’t tell you how she married Caius, did she?"

The key clicked in the lock.

Caius’s body tensed. He looked down at Heather, who was flushed and dazed.

The door creaked open a little.

Caius pulled out and lunged forward, slamming it shut again and locking it tight.

"What the hell?" Penny’s voice came through.

Heather’s cheat rose and fell, her lipstick was smudged, and her body aching.

Caius stared down at her with wild eyes and jagged breathing.

"Heather, open this door now!"Lauren yelled.

Manager Sheng tried the key again, Caius locked it.

"She’s locking it again."

"Are you sure it’s her?" Penny asked.

"There’s definitely someone in there," Sheng said firmly.

"Maybe I should call Caius," Lauren said, already pulling out her phone.

"Good idea. Don’t call Heather, call Caius instead." Penny said with heavy sarcasm.

Caius silently grabbed his phone from his suit jacket... and dropped it into the small fish tank in the corner.

Lauren ignored Penny. "He’s not answering."

Caius turned to Heather, lifting her gently.

"Are we going again?" she whispered.

"Shh," he said, picking up a pen and a piece of paper from the floor. "Write ’go away.’"

Heather giggled and played with his hand, too unfocused to listen.

He snapped his fingers in front of her face. "Focus."

She blinked, then grabbed the pen and wrote "Go away" on the paper.

As the door lock turned again, Caius dashed forward, slammed it shut again, and locked it. He slid the paper under the door.

"Wait, what’s that?" Penny asked.

Sheng bent down to pick it up. "Go away," he read aloud, scratching the back of his head.

"I called Caius, but he’s not picking up. Is he okay?" Lauren asked.

"No one here cares about Caius," Penny muttered.

Caius raised an eyebrow at that. "Fair," he said softly to himself.

"I’m going to look for him," Lauren announced, already walking off.

"Good luck," Penny called after her.

Sheng nodded. "Let’s go."

Penny hesitated before leaning close to the door. "Heather? If you need anything, just call, okay?"

Silence.

Then a paper slid under the door again.

Penny picked it up. It had a small check mark.

"Alright. Good night." She and Sheng turned and left.

Caius let out a long breath and looked down at Heather, who had already fallen asleep on the desk.

He quietly put his clothes back on, hers too. He unlocked the door, and slipped out.
