Chapter 49: A Heavy Decision

"How long are you going to keep me like this?" Clard asked.

Raiga glanced at him, then looked back toward the corridor leading into the Ant Bee nest. "Until the leader of the Ant Bees arrives. You must die by his hand."

Clard looked confused. "I already killed their leader. Don’t you know that the leader of the Ant Bees was the Prince of Ant Bee?" Clard laughed, pointing toward Niva’s corpse lying not far from where he was. "The body you tidied up earlier was their leader. That was the Prince of Ant Bee."

Raiga gave a small smile. "You’re very wrong."

Clard turned. "What do you mean?"

Raiga pointed toward the entrance hole into the Ant Bee nest. "That’s your answer."

Clard looked in the direction Raiga pointed. Right then, he saw a figure he had never seen before walking alongside Tamae and the demon woman. Behind them were countless Ant Bees. Upon seeing them, Clard swallowed hard. He realized that the ones he defeated were only a fraction of the Ant Bee colony.

"How can there still be so many of them?" he muttered.

He didn’t focus on Alvaric, who was walking toward him. But when Alvaric was very close, both Raiga and Brukk immediately showed their respect. Raiga didn’t even dare to lift his gaze, as if he were terrified.

Clard didn’t understand. "Why are you..."

A second later, one of his arms was severed and fell to the ground. At first, there was no pain. But after a few seconds, Clard screamed in agony. At the same time, he felt a terrifying aura pressing down on his entire body.

He vomited blood. The pressure caused his bones to break. He tried to resist with what strength he had left, but it was no use.

"What is this? How can there be a being this powerful?" Clard groaned.

A second later, something stepped on his head. His pride was trampled. Clard wanted to fight back, but couldn’t. The more he struggled, the weaker his body became.

Bam!

His head was stomped with such force that it sank into the ground. A moment later, his body was lifted. Clard locked eyes with Alvaric. Alvaric’s eyes were still wet with tears that had only recently fallen, but now they radiated something colder than death—burning hatred and vengeance.

His tears had stopped, but the traces remained on a face that now showed no mercy at all.

"You killed the girl I cherished," Alvaric said, clenching his fist. He was ready to strike. "You killed her. Death must be repaid with death."

Clard tried to fight back. He kicked at Alvaric’s leg, but it didn’t move. A moment later, Alvaric delivered a powerful punch to Clard’s body. The blow sent him flying into the air. Alvaric then glanced at Gramn, whose face had gone pale.

"What are you planning to do?" he shouted.

Without mercy, Alvaric pulled out Vapper’s Dagger and slashed through half of Gramn’s body. Blood poured from the wound. The slash was clean, avoiding vital organs, which left Gramn alive—just long enough to feel the pain. He screamed in agony.

Not long after, Clard’s body crashed to the ground. His bones were broken. He couldn’t move at all. Even his jaw was shattered upon impact.

He screamed, but the sound that came out was distorted. Tears fell from Clard’s eyes as he tried to endure the pain. There was nothing he could do now but wait for death.

"I’m sorry, sir. I failed to stop this attack!" Raiga said in a soft voice. "I tried to stop it, but this army is from the kingdom. As part of the kingdom, I couldn’t disobey."

Raiga chose his words carefully—soft and reasonable—hoping Alvaric wouldn’t turn his wrath toward him too.

"This is not enough," Alvaric said.

Raiga closed his eyes. He knew this was coming. "What do you want as payment, so you will forgive me?"

Alvaric turned briefly. "Nothing. Because nothing you can offer will ever be equal to Niva’s life. Not even the life of an entire kingdom would suffice, but..." Alvaric walked over to Niva. He knelt down and carried her lifeless body in his arms. "...if you declare war on the kingdom, then I will forgive you."

Raiga’s eyes widened in shock. "No. That’s impossible. If I do that, then the entire city of Chillg will be wiped out."

Alvaric glanced at him. Raiga’s body immediately felt heavy. He almost collapsed. He was forced to his knees. Alvaric raised his hand, pointing at Raiga.

"If you refuse, then tomorrow, Lyrith and I will slaughter the entire city of Chillg. Choose."

After saying that, Alvaric walked back into the Ant Bee nest. The demon woman and the rest of the Ant Bees followed him in. Only Tamae, Brukk, Raiga, and a few Chillg soldiers remained.

Raiga was still kneeling, his body trembling under the fading pressure of Alvaric’s aura. But the threat was far from gone. He took a deep breath, trying to bear the weight crushing his soul.

Tamae stepped forward. "What will you decide?"

Raiga shook his head slightly, still staring at the ground. "I don’t know. On one hand, we are nothing without the kingdom’s protection. If we rebel, it won’t take a month before the central army arrives to destroy us. We’ll be wiped out."

"But if we stay silent, Alvaric will massacre us tomorrow."

"But if we betray the kingdom..." Raiga took a deep breath and closed his eyes. "It’s the same as suicide."

Whatever they chose, both options felt like the end for Chillg. Raiga pulled his hair, hitting his head repeatedly. He was truly torn over what decision to make. Both carried the risk of total destruction.

"What if we ask the kingdom for help? Maybe they’ll send reinforcements to protect Chillg. Maybe even one of the main generals will come. I believe if any of them steps in, they could match that man," Brukk suggested.

Tamae laughed loudly upon hearing that. "Ask for help from the kingdom? That’s the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard. Do you think they’ll aid Chillg? Did you forget what happened last year?"

Brukk fell silent. He remembered it clearly—when monsters attacked from the forest. Raiga had sent a letter asking for reinforcements, but it went unanswered. Fortunately, Chillg narrowly escaped destruction. To the kingdom, Chillg wasn’t valuable enough. Its lack of natural resources made it expendable.

"And besides, the attack is happening tomorrow," Tamae continued.

Raiga stood up. He had made his decision. "I have no other choice. We must betray the kingdom. I hope this is the best decision."

Brukk wanted to say something, but he held back. Meanwhile, Tamae nodded. She had made up her mind from the start.

Raiga turned around. "You must be ready for whatever comes. This will be a hard life."

Brukk and Tamae nodded. "We’re with you."
