The Last King Of Darkness -
Chapter 85 - 68: War Begins
Chapter 85: Chapter 68: War Begins
An invisible ripple unfurled from her hands, just like a burst of soap bubbles.
"In the upcoming battle, we mainly do three things,"
Roger continued.
"Protect our scout, Rod."
"Don’t let the Plague Demon escape, especially not to the surface."
"Pinpoint the Plague Demon’s position and create a good environment for Mr. Bach’s firepower output."
Keith nodded, "Our team’s first core is Bach. Due to the Plague Demon’s special characteristics, only Bach can cause it substantial damage."
Bach was a silent middle-aged man, wearing the Knight Order’s standard combat attire, with a sword and shield emblazoned on the front and the spiritual figures of two horses, one white and one red, on the back.
He thumped his chest with his right hand as a sign that he would give it his all.
Rod surreptitiously sized him up.
Kashan had said that the Knight Order was an elite corps, and her dream was to become an elite White Spirit Knight.
It was unclear what kind of knight he was.
Keith continued,
"The second core is little Roro. The Plague Demon is of the evil spirit kind, with very strong mist and phantom capabilities. Without a scout with high Spiritual Vision, we can’t distinguish the Plague Demon’s phantoms."
Roger glanced worriedly at Rod.
He was too young and seemed inexperienced. It was uncertain whether he could carry this heavy responsibility.
Rod was also somewhat anxious in his heart. The mission seemed immensely challenging, and it was uncertain if the Eye of the Soul would hold up.
Keith went on, "All the others are support positions, existing around these two. Even if you die, they cannot, and I’m no exception."
The mood was somewhat somber, and nobody spoke.
Eve said nothing either; she just silently blew bubbles, enveloping one person after another.
The Hunting Squad moved quickly through the gloomy sewer. Roger seemed to possess some extraordinary tracking ability, discerning directions simply by sniffing the silt, sewage, and even the stench, leading them through the web-like pipes.
The air grew more putrid; fresh human feces became scarce, while the old, congealed waste accumulated increasingly. Shadows devoured the light from their waist lamps, compressing their sight to a few meters.
Suddenly, Roger stopped.
"We’re here."
He detached his waist lamp and stretched it forward.
"Right here."
The light was nearly swallowed by darkness. There was no ground visible ahead, an abyss as far as the eye could see.
Rod looked cautiously. In the view of the Eye of the Soul, everything was deathly still, no light from scattered Spiritual Energy, no colorful ribbons.
Of course, there was no monster to be seen either.
His view matched exactly what he saw with his naked eye.
Rod hesitated for a moment but decided to share what he saw.
"I don’t see the monster... There’s nothing here, quiet as a graveyard."
As his words fell, Roger showed a smile.
"That’s right, it’s supposed to be like that. Your Spiritual Vision is indeed high."
Seeing Rod’s puzzled look, he explained, "The space can’t be empty, just as water flows from high to low and air blows from higher to lower pressure, the same goes for energy. If you didn’t see it, it means it’s been absorbed. The Plague Demon is below us; it’s trying to heal its damaged spirit."
"But, I haven’t seen the monster either."
"The Plague Demon must be in a quiescent state. This is an opportunity."
Roger reattached the waist lamp to his side, walked to the edge of the pipe, and leaped, jumping into the abyss.
About three seconds later, Rod saw Roger’s illuminated figure land at the bottom. The height appeared to be at least fifty meters.
That was ridiculously deep.
What on earth was hidden beneath the Royal City?
"Let’s go."
Seeing Rod’s pale face, Keith picked him up and jumped down second.
The rest followed suit.
The stale air rushed at them, making it difficult for Rod to breathe, and the indescribable moldy scent in the air made him worry about poisoning.
But when the young girl Eve landed, she blew new bubbles, enveloping everyone.
The scent at the tip of their nose suddenly became fresh, and Rod felt much better. He gave Eve a grateful smile, but she ignored him.
"The Plague Demon is here. First Level combat readiness," Roger said.
A faint Spiritual Energy glow emanated from everyone. Keith and two City Defense Army combatants proceeded in the lead, with Roger a step behind, and all the rest surrounded Bach and Rod.
Their pace was slow; their feet sunk into the thick, rotten matter, with visibility extremely low.
Suddenly, Rod’s vision revealed a huge Spiritual Body. It lay quietly in the center of the boundless darkness, like a dead jellyfish.
Then, several lines of text appeared above the Spiritual Body.
The Sufferer of Ausway
Type: Evil Spirit
Threat: Fatal
Soul Trait: Mist Spirit, Plague Soul
Danger: Conceived in hatred and loathing, strangled by the umbilical cord of plague, her instinct returns all suffered agonies to the world. Her presence brings forth plagues, her wails strip away the sanity of all living beings.
----
After reading, Rod immediately shouted, "I see it! Over there, about... uh, three hundred yards away."
"What?"
Everyone turned their heads.
Disbelievingly, Roger asked, "Three hundred yards? You can see a quiescent monster that far?"
Keith also frowned:
"Once the monster enters a dormant state, all its Spiritual Energy ceases to operate, and its soul enters a void-like state, almost completely unaware of the outside world. In Spiritual Vision, it’s as though it has disappeared, and can only be observed with the naked eye."
Rod didn’t know how to explain, but it couldn’t be an illusion; once Spiritual Vision was activated, the Eye of the Soul had entered a fully operational state and had never been wrong.
But he also knew he was too young, lacking in experience, and even Keith, who had witnessed him achieve full Spiritual Vision, was skeptical, which said a lot.
It was like when a patient encounters a young doctor; at this time, a strong sense of confidence is needed to influence them.
"It’s just three hundred yards away!"
Rod said with certainty.
"I am a full-fledged Spiritual Visionary, I can see everything."
"Its true soul name is the Sufferer of Ausway, its Soul Traits are Mist Spirit and Plague Soul, and the greatest threats to us are the plague and its wailing."
"Let’s get in position, Bach, build up your power and hit it hard, then we all rush in and blow it up."
"Do as I say, and it’s as good as dead, I’m telling you."
"Let’s go."
Instantly, everyone felt a surge of blood boiling within, as if things were really just as Rod had said.
Bach took the lead in the direction Rod had indicated, with strong Spiritual Energy gathering in his hands. The pure white moonlight unfolded in his hands, forming a Giant Bow as if liquid moonlight stretched into a Giant Arrow, and the intense wave of Spiritual Energy even created an invisible hurricane around him.
Keith let out a strange cry and followed.
"Let’s go."
As the Captain, Roger quickly said, deciding to believe in that moment too, but still had to fulfill the role of Captain.
Roger swiftly arranged everyone’s positions and more detailed tactics according to the direction Rod pointed.
"Rush in and blow it up" was just a general phrase; in reality, it couldn’t be executed that simply.
The team’s morale, which had been low due to arguing, returned, and everyone felt confident again.
A combatant whispered, "Is this what a full-fledged Spiritual Visionary looks like?"
The tone was full of either marvel or joy.
In Rod’s eyes, rows of tiny text appeared again.
Bach’s confidence +7
Keith’s confidence +7
Shi Dong’s confidence +6
Eve’s confidence +11
...
Humanity +8
So gaining humanity like this is also a new pathway; it’s yet another means to accumulate humanity.
Since his spirit was able to resonate with the Obelisk, Rod didn’t need to enter the Dream Realm to see the Obelisk’s information, which was one of the results of his recent research into the Dream Realm.
After creating "Guardian of Darkness," his Humanity had reached 261 points, far exceeding the required threshold.
Just a few words spoken had earned him another 8 points.
At this rate, his Humanity would soon explode again.
Aside from being a material, does it have any other use?
Rod secretly decided to find a new use for Humanity in the Book of Knowledge once he got back.
Soon, everyone was in position and ready.
Bach’s Moon Bow had become exaggerated to an extreme; when he pulled the bowstring, it was as if a Full Moon appeared, and when he shot the Moon Arrow, it seemed as though the entire night sky had been released with it.
The Giant Arrow, like solidified moonlight, traced a dazzling trajectory as it shot into the darkness pointed out by Rod.
The boundless darkness swallowed it in an instant, and deathly silence pressed upon everyone’s eardrums.
A combatant couldn’t help but whisper, "Was it mistaken?"
Bach calmly said, "No."
He raised his hand, drawing a second arrow, like an archer who already knew the outcome.
The next moment, a violent explosion occurred.
Boom!
An infinite number of moonlights burst forth, the splendid moonlight illuminating the dark Abyss, bringing light to the perennially sunless depths beneath the Royal City.
For the first time, everyone could see this space clearly.
It was like an abandoned pool, vast and broad, with unidentifiable black, cotton-like matter hanging from the bluish stone walls, and the ground was covered in what seemed like lifeless, rotted flesh.
And in the center was a huge tomb built from rotting flesh, which had been blown apart, leaving only remnants.
A monster made of rotting flesh, umbilical cords, and swollen baby heads stood up; it was about ten meters tall, ominously yellow-green, and covered in damage.
The injury caused by Bach’s Giant Arrow was the most severe, destroying half of its body.
Intense green clouds sprayed out from it.
Roger shouted, "Eve, anti-poison bubble!"
"Keith, Shi Dong, go tie it down! Don’t let it release its Phantom!"
Two figures encased in blue bubbles charged into the poison fog.
"Mid-position support, disrupt its attacks, cover Bach!"
"Rear-position defense, go protect Rod."
He swiftly issued a series of commands, then raised his hand, and a firefly soared into the sky, quickly ascending and exploding into a huge orange Fireball.
The light rapidly illuminated the nearby battlefield and made everyone basked in its glow feel spiritually comfortable and their Spiritual Energy more active.
Roger revealed a slight smile.
The situation was highly favorable.
