Chapter 694: Chapter 402 Disaster of Evil (Part 2)
The closer they got to the castle, the thicker the Black Fog became. That deep, ominous fog seemed to permeate from the deepest corners of the world, carrying the weight and chill of hell itself, shrouding the sight of everyone.
Here, the sight of anyone was limited to within 20 yards.
Except for Rod.
His Absolute Spiritual Vision could see up to 400 yards away, vastly outdistancing theirs by dozens of times.
Is this what it means to be a Spiritual Visionary?
Jon marveled inwardly.
My Spiritual Vision is also 80, and I’m considered a high-level Spiritual Visionary, so why is my sight only 20 yards?
He also felt relieved, grateful that Rod had stepped forward, otherwise they might have found it difficult just to approach the castle.
"100 yards to go,"
Rod said, "Shall we enter the castle through the breach? The original route is very unsafe, with three Soul-Thirsty Specters roaming around there."
Jon was silent for a few seconds. The original route had been pieced together by scholars from the Royal City based on historical materials and information, but they couldn’t possibly know the distribution of monsters.
The Soul-Thirsty Specters were a very troublesome type of monster, their thirst for souls spreading like a plague, and a ruckus would quickly arise amongst all nearby monsters. Even the Silence Bell didn’t have much effect on them.
"Change the route," Jon said, "Choose the safest route you think is best."
Rod hesitated, "Is that alright?"
Jon responded, "First let’s get inside the castle, then we’ll look for a new route."
"Fine."
The team continued moving forward and soon bypassed the monsters outside the castle, stepping into that huge breach.
Upon the first step, Rod felt a cold chill rise up his spine as if something unknown was watching him.
Jon and the others felt the same.
The petite Misole whispered, "I feel the aura of a curse; this is a cursed land."
With a hoarse voice, Hall said, "Ignore those chaotic delusions. Many times, they are just mental illusions, disorders we create from the pressure of darkness and the erosion of the Black Fog. As long as we overcome them and stride confidently to the source, eliminating everything at its root, we will find that victory is actually easy to achieve."
Jon nodded slightly, "Hall’s got a point. Mental state and psychological factors are one of the major reasons for our diminishing numbers. It is not the monsters that instill fear in us, it’s ourselves."
Rod may not have experienced what they were talking about, but he could imagine that condition. If he didn’t have the Dream Realm, fighting in such an environment would be mentally taxing.
Lily said softly, "I’m not afraid; Lord Theodore will protect me."
Jon almost imperceptibly frowned but said nothing more, except, "First head towards the center of the castle, then we’ll find a way down."
Rod continued to lead the team on.
The breach was quite large, its interior filled with remnants of corpses and rubble, with a jagged and uneven surface as if it had been struck by a meteor.
It seemed Jon had guessed Rod’s thoughts as he said, "Legend has it that this is a remnant from the battle between the Starry Kingdom and the Soul Devouring King. Their Great Star Priest summoned meteors from the Void, breaking the castle’s Spirit defenses, severely injuring the Soul Devouring King, and subsequently sealing it."
Rod asked, "Didn’t they have the power to kill it?"
Jon shook his head, "It shouldn’t be that way. The Starry Kingdom at its peak was very powerful, founded by the legendary King of the Stars. With the blessing of the stars, each king enjoyed an extremely long life, and under the protection of the strongest rulers, new emerging forces in the kingdom grew like grass after Spring rain, one Commander after another stepped into the forefront of the era."
"At their strongest, they drove the Black Fog out of the Dead Soil Continent by themselves and expanded it into the Gray Soil Continent."
Rod furrowed his brows. North of the Dead Ash Mountain Range was the Dead Soil Continent, which in his mind was a land sunken into endless darkness.
And to the south of the Dead Ash Mountain Range was the Gray Soil Continent, which was the region where Trolian resided.
"So that means..."
Jon nodded, "All the traces of the Starry Kingdom we see today are remnants from the time of their expansion, including Star City, Star Town, the Black Forest, and so on."
Rod’s heart sank. Trolian occupied only a tiny corner of the Gray Soil Continent and yet it possessed such formidable strength.
A kingdom that had taken over an entire continent and had the ability to attack another continent, how powerful could it be?
"How did they fall?"
Jon shook his head, "That’s what we want to know the most. The Royal City has always been looking for the reason behind the fall of the Starry Kingdom. Dozens of schools, academies, and hundreds of scholars are involved, but so far, we haven’t found a definitive reason."
Rod asked the Book of Knowledge in his mind, "Do you know?"
The Book of Knowledge gave a negative answer: "In my last fragment of memory, I have an impression of the existence of the Starry Kingdom, but no memory of its downfall. The Starry Kingdom should not have been in decline when the Dream Realm was shattered."
"Can you find out the reason?"
"No, it’s beyond my limit. This is not knowledge," answered the Book of Knowledge.
"Would ’Divine Sense’ work?"
"Better not to use it," warned the Book of Knowledge. "’Divine Sense’ has its limits and given your current position, there’s a high chance you’ll only get a vague hint, and it’s also possible that you won’t get any answers at all. We have only 35 points of divinity left."
