Chapter 691: Chapter 401: The Calamity of Evil (Part 1)

Rod was startled. What had happened?

The battle at Storm Pass had just begun—it couldn’t possibly be failing already, could it?

Anna said, "There must have been some emergency. I’ll take you there."

Rod shook his head. "I’ll go by myself. You take Mephit and Kashan back to the base. If I don’t return and you encounter danger, take them back to the Rock Lighthouse."

In this team, he was the sole core; his departure would collapse the team’s structure. The monsters they could usually kill easily could annihilate them in a moment, so Anna had to be there— if not to fight, then at least to flee.

Though Anna was reluctant to admit it, she knew Rod was right.

All three fell silent. Rod waved his hand and turned, running toward the Seventh Station.

The black fog was thick, but he had the Eye of the Soul and a good sense of direction, so he quickly found the base.

Like the Third Station, the Seventh Station was just a flicker of flame, illuminating a twenty-yard radius, like a small oasis in the endless black fog.

At that moment, the oasis was packed with people.

Each person wore a hall robe with a double flame symbol on the collar, carried a lantern at their waist, and wore a brooch with a red tear stone on their chest—all Second Level Combatants engaged in battle.

They formed a circle, at the center of which stood Jon, Guardian and King Candidate, with a woman in a Guardian Robe by his side, her age indiscernible.

Rod quickly recalled her name from memory—Guardian Lily, the woman who controlled the eternal Chaos Fire, with whom he had fought during the Abyss Giant Snake campaign.

As Rod stepped into the range of the firelight, Jon immediately said, "Good, everyone’s here. The situation is urgent, so I’ll keep it brief."

"The great eye of the White Tower, while observing the Star Phase, foresaw a great omen of disaster. Mistress Meredith, the Master of White Tower, used Holy Spirit Divination to pinpoint the source of the crisis."

"The Soul Devouring King’s castle."

The inside of the ring of firelight fell silent; everyone remained quiet. Those who had become Second Level Combatants had survived countless crises and disasters, having faced death numerous times, and were well-seasoned veterans (Rod being the exception).

Maintaining composure in the face of crisis was a fundamental quality.

Rod, too, remained silent. Though not as experienced as the others, he had faced many things that no one here had.

Jon continued, "The Soul Devouring King is an ancient evil spirit, a latent threat since the establishment of Trolian. This powerful King Level Monster has been dormant for thousands of years, its exact timeline unverifiable. According to notes compiled by the Academy of History, it originated from the sage Ares in the previous Epoch, and it didn’t go dormant willingly but was sealed during the most prosperous era of the Starry Kingdom."

"We do not know why the Starry Kingdom did not destroy it, nor why they failed to raze the evil spirit’s castle. Since the fall of the Starry Kingdom, the Soul Devouring King’s castle has once again fallen silent, until now."

Jon paused, then continued speaking.

"Some strange disturbance has occurred within the Soul Devouring King’s castle, the Starry Kingdom’s sealing is dissipating and failing, and the ancient evil spirit’s Spiritual Energy is awakening."

Jon’s voice grew heavy.

"Unfortunately, at this critical moment, it is difficult for Royal City to spare Special Level Combatants to address this crisis, and we are not suited to initiate a King Level battle at this time. Hence, the Royal City has decided that our Western Front will dispatch personnel to form an elite combat team to head to the castle of the Soul Devouring King and reconstruct the sealing."

He extended his hand, holding a pure white rune in his palm.

"This is a Starry Rune urgently forged by Mistress Meredith, the Master of White Tower. Our mission is to locate the sealing point and replace the old and ineffective seal with this rune."

"Therefore, I need a teammate skilled in runes and sealing, a teammate with strong Spiritual Vision and high resistance to pollution and corrosion, and a teammate with the ability to conceal and transfer or remove curses and abnormal states," Jon explained as he looked around solemnly.

"Please be aware, this is a highly dangerous mission. Follow your own intuition to decide if it’s suitable or if there are signs of danger."

"This is also why I have gathered you all here."

As soon as he finished speaking, a tall man stepped forward.

His temples were peppered with white, his face weathered, and a long scar ran across his cheek, leaving him with only his left eye.

"I, Hall from Mushroom City, Soul Trait: Seal of the Sky, Characteristic Level 9, Spiritual Power Level ten, Strength 3600 grand ticks, specialize in the vanguard role, nickname Scalpel."

Jon nodded. "Which station?"

"Eleven."

"Alright. Combatants from the Tenth and Twelfth Stations, you two are also responsible for guarding this station."

Two voices from the crowd responded simultaneously, "Yes!"

As the voices settled, another woman walked out.

She appeared delicate and frail, with fine features, short stature, and a soft, light voice.

"I am Misole from Thousand Lake Town, Soul Trait: Receptor Transfer, Characteristic Level 8, Spiritual Power Level ten, Strength 4000 grand ticks, specialize in the back position."

Jon nodded, "Which station?"

"Sixteen."

"No problem!" Two crisp responses came from the crowd before Jon could speak, "I’ve got this."

"One last spot," Jon waited a few seconds, looked around, and saw no one step forward.
