Chapter 52: Chapter 41 Encounter Danger
With a loud bang,
Reslin took the monster’s heavy strike on his back, then quickly spun around and chopped at its head with his sword.
This monstrosity was covered in disgusting tumors, its brown, massive body resembled an enlarged tumor, its head was like a festering sore embedded within the tumor, and its limbs akin to hypertrophic tissue sprouting from the tumor.
Reslin’s strike split open one of the tumors on its head, sending yellow-green pus splattering everywhere.
A moment later, a huge fist formed from white fog flew in from the side and knocked it over.
Egger leaped forward, his small stature wrapped in thick white fog, with three streams of fog extending from him—two at the back, quickly moving Rod and Karamon, adjusting the team’s position.
One in the front, which after knocking the monster over, swiftly bound it.
"It’s a Filthy Corpse!"
Rod suddenly shouted.
"Type, Cursed. Soul Trait is Pollution Spray, threat assessment, medium. Reslin, don’t touch the proliferated tissue it sprays, you’ll get cursed!"
Reslin was about to step forward for another strike but, upon hearing the warning, hesitated and immediately leaped back.
Sure enough, the next moment, the monster erupted with yellow-green pus from all over its body, staining the filthy ground the same sickening color.
Reslin called out, "Good reminder!" Spiritual Energy surged towards his back, and he turned to unleash a torrent of steel needles toward the repulsive creature.
The Filthy Corpse roared continuously as the needles pierced through its tumors, more brown viscous fluid mixed with yellow-green pus flowed out, and the darkness melting inside its body began to fade, weakening its Spiritual Power.
But it was tightly bound by the white fog, struggling in vain.
Egger shouted, "Reslin! Now’s your chance! Don’t miss it!"
Karamon was at the rear, his hands pressed together, a strong white light emanating from him. Rod clearly saw a bond of Spiritual Energy connect him to Reslin.
Reslin’s Spiritual Energy became exceedingly bright.
"Perhaps this is the ability of ’Spiritual Power Resonance’."
Rod thought.
He remembered clearly that Karamon, like him, belonged to the Starfire Series, possessing two important Fire Spark abilities, "Spiritual Power Resonance" and "Water Healing," with a Spiritual Power Level of four, and his Tactical Position was rear support.
Clearly, his task was to use Spiritual Power Resonance and Water Healing to assist his teammates in the front.
Spiritual Power Resonance could restore or strengthen his teammates’ Spiritual Power, while Water Healing treated injured teammates, truly a perfect support.
Egger’s Soul Trait was white smoke, capable of releasing many streams of white fog that could attack or control enemies, move or protect teammates—certainly very suitable for the "mid-control" position.
As for Reslin, there was even less need to say.
Apart from lacking a bit in damage capability, this was simply a perfect squad, just like the old battle-priest-warrior trinity.
Thinking this, Rod gained an even clearer understanding of the meaning behind Tactical Positions.
It was about arranging one’s abilities in combat to achieve maximum effectiveness.
And he himself was quite suited for the position of rear scout.
Not only could he provide early warnings, but the capabilities of the Eye of the Soul far exceeded his knowledge.
Just now, when he focused all his attention on the monster, he clearly sensed some kind of information contained within its Soul Waveform.
Upon closer inspection, a line of text suddenly appeared on its soul.
Filthy Corpse.
Type: Cursed.
Threat Assessment: Medium.
Soul Trait: Pollution Spray.
Danger: Proliferative tissue carries a curse.
Without a doubt, this wasn’t the result of Spiritual Vision but definitely an ability of the Eye of the Soul.
Rod immediately remembered the earlier question from Reslin and relayed all the information on the spot.
The effect was immediate, with Reslin being on guard, he dodged every spray and took advantage of the gaps to slash viciously at its head with his sword.
With each successful cut, the Filthy Corpse’s soul shuddered, and the Soul Waveform at the struck area showed a burst of disruption.
The Spiritual Energy circulating within the monster’s body was visibly weakening.
But Egger’s white smoke was also fading.
It was about to break free.
No!
He absolutely could not allow any monster to threaten the safety of his teammates’ lives!
Seizing the moment, Rod lifted his Spirit Gun, pre-charged with Spiritual Energy, and upon a disruption in the Filthy Corpse’s Soul Waveform, resolutely infused the final surge of Spiritual Energy.
Bang!
The Heavy Strike mode of Raven unleashed the most destructive True Silver Bullet, which hit the monster’s head directly.
The high-energy True Silver Bullets pierced through its outer defense and exploded inside its body.
Boom!
The entire upper half of the Soul of Filthy Corpse burst open, spraying yellow-green and dark brown viscous matter all over the place, with its rotten organs shattered on the ground.
In Rod’s eyes, the enormous shadow had been ripped into pieces, and the black Spiritual Energy scattered across the sky like ashes blown by a gale, disappearing into the Void without a trace.
A thicker black line rose from the monster’s body and flew into him, with a row of clearer text surfacing in the depths of his eyes.
[Small Piece of Soul]
Not bad.
A surge of joy filled Rod’s heart.
It’s no wonder I am who I am; all those years of practicing my Skill weren’t for nothing. The fact that no classmate is willing to team up with me for gaming is proof enough.
Even though a Small Piece of Soul doesn’t sound very impressive, it’s certainly better than a soul that’s like dust.
That was a profitable encounter.
His teammates also praised him:
"That was a Weakness Strike. Well done."
"Your observation skills are really sharp."
Karamon even began to harbor some doubts, "Are you fooling us? Are you actually super strong?"
"No," Rod immediately denied, "I am weak, and very cautious and careful. I always prefer to be steady and not rash. Don’t act recklessly; I won’t be able to keep up."
Karamon looked at him skeptically, "I don’t see where you’re being cautious and careful..."
Egger dispelled the white smoke surrounding him, his short stature hitting the muddy ground and instantly revealing his true height.
He said happily, "That was such a satisfying fight; clearly, there was a reason why they assigned you to our team."
Reslin glanced at the rapidly evaporating remains, the black ash hardly noticeable in the dark sewer.
There was a hint of doubt in his voice.
"This is a monster-type. Why would it appear on the surface level of the Royal City Sewer?"
Rod curiously asked, "What’s a monster-type?"
His attitude was properly set. Since I’ve lost my memory and don’t know anything, what’s there to fear from asking?
Karamon looked at him suspiciously but still explained, "Spiritual Power operates in a Static State, enhancing physical capabilities, mainly engaging in close combat with physical strikes... You must be tricking me, right? Over eighty percent of the Cursed are monster-types."
"What about the other twenty percent?"
"Demons, of course. Their Spiritual Power operates normally, using both physical and Spiritual Energy in combat."
"Is there anyone who fights with just Spiritual Energy?"
"That’s generally a Spiritual Body, like an Evil Spirit or Ancient Relics and such."
"Does that have anything to do with the sewer?"
"It does," this time it was Reslin’s grave voice. He squatted on the ground, closely examining the surroundings.
"The Royal City is protected by Holy Fire; usually, it’s just monsters that are born directly from the Black Fog. Demons typically need a contaminating source, but those have long been cleared away. They shouldn’t appear on the surface level of the sewer, and the environment here isn’t suitable for them either."
He stood up, his tone becoming serious, "Something is not right. We better retreat for now."
Karamon was a bit stunned, "Retreat? We’re not looking for the Corrosive Material anymore? It should be nearby."
Rod looked up, the black current flowing towards the deeper parts of the sewer, but still not showing the phenomenon of the Corrosive Material they spoke of, indicating it was at a considerable distance from them.
"It’s not nearby; it’s quite far."
Reslin nodded, "Let’s retreat first, not stop looking. We will continue once we get support."
Karamon was a bit annoyed, "You’re always so cautious, what’s there to be afraid of..."
Before he could finish, Rod’s vision was filled with dozens of shadows rushing towards them at an incredibly fast pace, each with undulating Soul Waveforms indicating they were Ungraded or higher level monsters.
Not just that.
Rod’s pupils suddenly constricted as he spotted a different Soul Waveform among them, its monotonous profile like that of a monster, but dramatically oscillating back and forth.
This was Mature Level!
It was the specifically shaped monster that Mo’er had talked about, fully formed within the Black Fog, also the most dangerous and the greatest cause of human casualties!
"Run!"
Rod urgently shouted,
"There’s a Mature Level monster coming!"
But no one moved. Rod insisted, "Run! There’s not just one; there are many..."
He hadn’t finished speaking when he also saw it—the pathway behind them emptied of its glittering stones, replaced by a thick, almost sentient darkness.
