Chapter 461: Chapter 299 Historical Thickness_2
But he did not interrupt the scholar again, instead noting this question in his heart and planning to ask the Book of Knowledge’s spirit after its recovery.
Amides continued, "According to some clues we have gathered from historical ruins, we infer that during a certain period in the middle of the Second Epoch, the Black Fog appeared."
"There is a significant gap in this part of history, and many truths have been obliterated. We only know the outcome."
"Gods fell one after another, either vanishing entirely or being eroded by the Black Fog and degenerating into monsters. Divine Cities were annihilated, and humans were defeated utterly."
The room fell into silence, the breathing of those present seemingly held in suspense, leaving only the aged voice of Amides.
"The records of the history that followed are abundant. We found descriptions of that era in many ruins. They were filled with pain and despair, with pessimism about the future and fear of mankind’s impending doom. Even after thousands of years, we can still vividly feel it."
"It was at this time that the Initial Fire was ignited."
"We are not sure of the precise date of the Primordial Fire’s birth. It seems to have existed at the start of the Second Epoch, but it’s also possible that the fire’s source was the demise of the gods. Many theories exist, but the true history has been sealed within the river of time, the remaining clues too ancient to trace. We can only reconstruct what happened in that era through our imagination."
"People ignited the Primordial Fire and built the first Fire King City of mankind."
A pause from Amides, before he finally uttered that name.
"The Blessed Holy City, the sacred heart of Ameliakas’ Loren City."
"Its emergence brought hope. The light of fire dispelled the Black Fog, eradicated the monsters, and gave humanity a chance to breathe."
"From then on, the Epoch of Gods ended, and humans entered the Fire Epoch."
Amides’ expression changed from one of grief to one of uplifted spirits.
"Once Loren City stabilized, the remnants of mankind gathered together. Human strength grew again, and with mastery over fire, a new profession system, the Fire Holders, was born."
"The people cleared the monsters around Loren City and expanded this human settlement ever larger."
"For reasons unknown, the Black Fog also weakened during this period. Human expeditions traveled farther and regained control of vast territories."
"But without fire, humans could not survive for long. Once they left, monsters would re-emerge from the Black Fog."
"After some time, people learned to separate the Holy Fire Seed from the Primordial Fire, and thus they traveled across the land to ignite Holy Fires and establish more Fire King Cities."
"But even this could not satisfy the burgeoning needs of mankind. They mastered the method of using the power of Holy Fire to create Guardian Fires."
"Thus, fire spread rapidly across the earth, like the most magnificent starry sky on the clearest summer night."
"Countless Human Kingdoms were established, and humans became unprecedentedly strong. During their most glorious era, the light of fire shone in all directions. The earth was covered with cities of man, and brave warriors hunted down demons in the Black Fog. The Black Fog was relegated to distant and remote regions and a small part of the continent."
"Everyone believed that they would eventually conquer the nightmares of this world and welcome a bright future."
The tone of Amides grew heavy once again.
"It was then that catastrophe struck."
"Where it came from, why it arrived, we still do not understand to this day. This period is the most lost to history. We can almost only find destroyed relics, extinguished Holy Fires, fallen Royal Cities, and human warriors turned into monsters."
"Only towards its end do we find some traces of history again."
"The survivors called this period the Great Extinction. It is shunned in all ancient literature. We only know that Royal Cities fell one by one, Holy Fires went out in succession, and the heroes of mankind, once seen as hope, perished one after another. Darkness once again enveloped the land."
"We consider the fall of the Starry Kingdom closest to us as the end of the Fire Epoch."
"When their capital, the night of Starry Sky, Tasnia’s Starry Sky City, was breached by indescribable monsters fifteen hundred years ago, the dark age began."
Amides said in a low tone.
"What happened at the start of this age is unknown, but according to the records in Trolian Royal City, it is said that the last human hero, Trolian, took away the last Holy Fire Seed and re-ignited it within our Royal City, gathering the remnants of mankind and establishing a kingdom that endures to this day."
"In honor of this great hero, we named this kingdom Trolian."
"From that moment, the Tesrivian Calendar began and, till this date, has lasted 1325 years."
The venue was quiet, and no one spoke.
Everyone felt the immense weight of this history, and the heavy sense of it rendered everyone breathless.
Rod felt it most acutely. There had been times when he almost thought he was invincible, as if every Ancient God was nothing more than a trifle to be vanquished with a single strike.
If even Ancient Gods were so fragile, was there anything stronger than them?
Yet, in the history recounted today, Rod’s feelings were stronger than anyone else’s because he knew something that no one else did.
The Book of Knowledge had once told him that the Dream Realm had had more than one master in the past, each of whom was the strongest of their era.
In the torrent of history, however, they seemed to have hardly made a splash.
And how could he, who only had a fragmentary Dream Realm and had ignited just a small part of the stars, possibly be invincible?
Amides fell silent for a minute before continuing.
"During this period, we have also experienced two major discontinuities and lost a vast amount of historical information, which is something we deeply regret."
There was great sorrow in Amides’ tone, and the expressions of the audience mirrored it.
"If this historical information were intact, we would unravel many unknown secrets, understand the historical truth behind the major discontinuities, and perhaps find the reasons for such terrifying disasters, so as to avoid them in the future."
The great scholar Oberon nodded slightly.
"Yes, that’s why, at my suggestion, we call the two major discontinuities that happened nine hundred and four hundred years ago the Great Extinctions—to remind us that the pressure of survival constantly weighs on our minds, and we must not be blinded by temporary victories."
The great scholar Delan said, "We place great importance on history. We intricately record the details of every event in the Great Book Library and preserve them carefully so that our descendants hundreds of years from now can consult them."
Amides nodded gently.
"Nothing is more important than history."
He repeated that sentence.
"When we know the past, we can understand the future."
After a pause, Amides continued, "Despite the two discontinuities, the history of Trolian is relatively clear. In these past one thousand plus years, we have also had our moments of glory. Currently, the ruins and towns we have expanded into and occupied have all been previously conquered."
"Of course, except for Star Town, which was only spared by Trolian six hundred years ago due to its location, it indeed is the first place we’ve occupied that was never conquered before."
"We have taken a step that our ancestors never did, and the man who made this great achievement is right before our eyes."
All eyes turned to Rod, filled with intense warmth.
Rod managed a strained smile.
Amides’ expression became solemn.
"Our path has been so tortuous, like the past humans who have been strong and weak, but ultimately will rise again. I firmly believe we will uncover all the secrets, let the light shine on more of the land, make humanity more prosperous, and find the path to the legendary ultimate light."
Everyone began clapping together, and a fervent spirit was rekindled in the venue.
Rod clapped vigorously as well, to dispel the lingering heaviness.
When the applause subsided, Rod suddenly thought of a question and asked,
"Your Excellency Amides, are we really the last Fire King City? From your narration, I didn’t hear that any other Fire King City had survived."
Amides answered with a smile, "That is the biggest controversy among us. Some believe that the world has been destroyed, and we are the last survivors."
"Yet, there are also those who believe that in some unknown distant place, there are still Fire King Cities that have survived."
