The Last King Of Darkness -
Chapter 369 - 259: Soul Invasion (Second Update)
Chapter 369: Chapter 259: Soul Invasion (Second Update)
Anna, running at full speed, suddenly tensed up.
Just as Rod was bending over to retrieve a javelin from the long bag at her side, he never expected her to come to an abrupt halt, causing him to fly out.
"Anna, what are you doing?"
Anna’s eyes were confused as she turned uncontrollably.
"I...I don’t know, it feels like something is compelling me, telling me not to run anymore."
She suddenly charged at the Ghost Spirit.
"I can’t run away anymore, I have to kill it!"
Rod instantly knew something was wrong and shot her a fierce glare.
The Ghost Spirit instantly turned its head and rushed toward him.
Rod bolted away.
Neither Captain O’Hara nor those who were attacking the Ghost Spirit noticed anything amiss, assuming it was just Rod’s normal maneuver.
Anna quickly joined the group attacking the Ghost Spirit, and her attack power was quite significant among the Low Rank Combatants.
The Ghost Spirit paid her no mind, continuing to charge toward Rod despite the countless long-range Spiritual Energy attacks and the encirclement of combatants.
Although Rod was just able to outrun the Ghost Spirit, the pursuit was consuming too much of his Spiritual Energy. Moreover, without Anna, the accessory agitator, he had to use Soul Harvest even more frequently.
This Ghost Spirit’s Soul Strength was notably higher than the cloaked monster’s, and with Rod already carrying a hefty amount of Void debt, there was a possibility Soul Harvest would fail to take effect and could only be used as a skill to draw aggro.
The consumption spiked dramatically, and Rod’s Spiritual Energy was rapidly depleting.
"Awakening" couldn’t be used now, as it would disrupt his rhythm and make the arrival date of Void Fury as uncertain as a misaligned menstrual cycle.
At this moment, only a fifth of the Ghost Spirit’s Spiritual Energy had been depleted.
The battle continued to rage fiercely.
A large group of people chased after it, hacking away; the long-range Spiritual Energy attacks fell on it like a torrential downpour. Such an impressive scene was extremely rare because the shockwaves from a powerful monster’s battle could wreak havoc on Low Rank Combatants who would not only be ineffective on the front lines but also interfere with the operations of High Rank Combatants.
But Rod’s astonishing abilities turned this formidable beast into a one-sided punching bag.
Though the Low Rank Combatants didn’t inflict much damage, the scrape of thousands all at once was unbearable even for a strong monster.
Rod’s scraping tactic was a resounding success.
Everything had been going smoothly, but the problem was that Anna had suddenly gone berserk and Rod was running out of Spiritual Energy.
After another lap, he clearly felt the powerlessness of depleted Spiritual Energy.
This won’t do.
Rod thought.
I have to use "Awakening."
But he hesitated; the use of "Awakening" was fixed after meticulous calculations, and if he used it now, the rhythm would be thrown off, and his entire plan would need to be altered.
While Rod was anxious and without other options, about to grit his teeth and use it, he suddenly caught a glimpse of Molly and Aro in the distance.
His mind raced, and he shouted, "Molly, hurry and bring Aro here! I’m out of Spiritual Energy!"
Aro clapped and laughed, "Hooray! It’s my turn to take the stage!"
Molly, turning into a wisp of mist, attached to Aro, and with a flash of Spiritual Light, Aro took a step that covered dozens of yards, rushing toward Rod.
Molly extended two long streams of mist, pushing off the ground with a bounce, and Aro’s form shot into Rod’s arms like lightning.
Forthwith, the mist flew from Aro onto Rod, and the effect of Wind Black Silk now worked on him, instantly boosting his speed and easing his burden.
Aro smiled gently, her small hand pressed against Rod’s chest, as her Spiritual Energy began to assimilate to his, flowing into his soul.
Rod felt a surge of warmth flood into him, his parched soul instantly moistened, and he suddenly found strength in his legs, his eyes burning with ferocity.
His Spiritual Energy was restored!
Overjoyed, Rod exclaimed, "Aro, you’re amazing!"
Aro laughed and answered, "See? I’ve got lots more, just say if you want it."
Surprised and delighted, Rod asked, "Aro, what level is your Spiritual Energy?"
Aro proudly held up two fingers.
"Eighth Level Spiritual Energy? Three levels higher than me... Aro, you’re so powerful."
Aro laughed proudly, "Of course! I’m Qingyu’s personal Spiritual Energy replenisher. My Spiritual Energy is unfathomable. Little Rod, you still need to push harder if you want to reach the depths."
Rod smiled and replied, "Then, Sister Aro, I won’t hold back."
As he sprinted madly, he gave the monster fierce glares, and the already wavering Ghost Spirit was firmly grasped by him, turning into nothing more than a spinning target.
Over three thousand combatants, under the command of three captains, took turns in the frenzy of hacking away at the creature.
Everyone was thrilled; even Mr. Big Stick, the defense master, abandoned building walls and charged forward to swing his club at the monster.
"Dammit, Star Town is full of weird shit, I’m done with this."
Uplifted by the Wind Black Silk, Rod was light as a swallow. To avoid any extra consumption, he even ran wildly with Aloe in his arms.
Whenever his Spiritual Energy was about to run out, he would shout out loud.
"Aloe, quick, replenish my magic!"
Aloe would then place her slender hand on his chest, injecting something scorching into his soul, making it go from dry to moist.
Rod was overjoyed.
Turns out Aloe was even more useful than he’d thought. If he’d known this, he would have asked Miss Qingyu for Aloe earlier to replenish his magic exclusively for him.
Meanwhile, in the distant Black Fog.
Krama and Amoli, the two Chief Judges, had begun to question their lives already.
As Third Level Combatants, although they were the lowest rank among High Rank Combatants, they had been through quite a few Strong Level battles.
Which of those battles wasn’t a matter of life and death, incredibly intense?
Which didn’t require full tactical planning, meticulous preparation?
And which didn’t see the most powerful giving it their all?
But what in the world was happening with the scenario before them?
Thousands of Low Rank Combatants were haphazardly hacking at the monster as if it were a pig for slaughter rather than a terrifying creature.
A man was running ahead with a woman in his arms.
Their touchy-feely behavior was downright like flirting as if what was chasing them wasn’t a filthy Ghost Spirit, but rather something like an inflatable doll.
There were even more people watching the excitement from a distance, cheering non-stop as if the scene unfolding before them was merely a thrilling performance.
Krama’s world view was shattered; he couldn’t accept what he was seeing and decided to use the Law of Magic again.
This was a characteristic unique to the Chief Judge, or rather, one had to possess this characteristic to become a Chief Judge.
The "Law Binder" could use an ability called "Decree," forcefully ordering the target to act according to its rules.
But Amoli stopped him.
"Be careful, Rod is not like the others. Directly using a Decree on him will definitely be detected."
"Then what do we do? At this rate, the Ghost Spirit could very well be worn to death. Fighting within the range of the fire is too disadvantageous for it."
Amoli said coldly, "We could use the Frenzy Decree on the monster. The unclean Ghost Spirit has the abilities of Soul Invasion and Instant Death Curse. Its instinct stops it from using these two skills on enemies much weaker than itself, but if we force it into a berserk state, it is possible that it might override its instincts."
Krama suddenly realized, "Right, we could use the Decree on the monster. We’re just trying to help them, after all."
The two of them laughed, raising their right hands, fingers spread, aiming at the unclean Ghost Spirit.
"I solemnly swear my loyalty, I shall faithfully execute the duties of the Chief Judge, and strive to eliminate all enemies who trample on the King’s Decrees."
"Decree: Frenzy!"
—
As Rod, draped with a beauty, and holding another in his arms, was happily running away, suddenly, the unclean Ghost Spirit turned red all over, and a powerful wave of Spiritual Energy burst forth like a tide, blowing away the surrounding Combatants.
Its speed increased sharply, startling Rod.
Rod hurriedly accelerated too. The boost from the Wind Black Silk greatly increased his speed. If it weren’t for the fact that the garments looked too perverted on a man, he definitely wouldn’t have given it to Molly.
The unclean Ghost Spirit, meanwhile, being repressed by both Fire Day and Guardian Fire, not only failed to catch up with Rod in its berserk state but also suffered greater damage. Flames rapidly consumed the Ghost Spirit, and thick black smoke billowed out like a smoky chimney.
Rod laughed, "The monster’s gone mad."
Aloe was somewhat puzzled, "Why did the Ghost Spirit suddenly go berserk? Are its instincts in disorder? But we haven’t used any soul-type strikes."
Molly, however, keenly sensed something was amiss: "Something’s not quite right. There were unusual actions from Anna before, too. It could be man-made."
Aloe covered her small mouth, her big eyes twinkling, "Are you saying there are Doomsday believers?"
"Not necessarily," Molly said solemnly, "but there’s definitely someone targeting us in the shadows. This entire attack has been abnormal from the start. Rod, hurry and kill the monster to avoid further unexpected complications."
Rod knew that whenever Molly was truly nervous, she’d call him by his name, indicating there indeed might be someone sabotaging them in the dark.
But all he could do now was try to stabilize the situation as much as possible.
The next moment, the Ghost Spirit suddenly came to a halt.
Its body began to swell, and its Spiritual Energy seethed to extremes.
A scout shouted, "Eleventh Level Spiritual Power Wave pattern! Spread out, it’s about to launch a high-intensity attack!"
"No!"
Molly’s voice suddenly became shrill.
"Swarm it! It’s an unclean Ghost Spirit, a monster formed from Soul Fragments of the fallen, the cursed, the undying!"
"It’s going to invade Rod’s soul!"
