The Last King Of Darkness
Chapter 239 - 173: Dream Fragment

Chapter 239: Chapter 173: Dream Fragment

In this land shrouded in darkness, amidst such bleak and dismal devastation, a dazzling star shone brightly.

Many fleeing survivors saw the lighthouse that was incredibly bright in the night sky.

Its light was so radiant that it dispelled the gloomy atmosphere.

Many wept, many shed tears, and many rekindled hope in despair, as the fierce flames attracted a large number of monsters from the region, making their journey home less treacherous. The bright beam of light dispelled the bone-deep corruption and pointed them in the right direction.

Countless displays of humanity washed over them, and the precious Flower of Humanity flickered in some eyes, but Rod paid them no heed, focusing intently on operating the reflector and accurately projecting the power of the fire onto teams in need of assistance.

The light drove away the darkness, scared off the monsters, and purified the spreading infection.

Thousands were saved.

Three clock hours later, the fire inevitably dimmed, and the distance of the light beam projected by the reflector shortened to within ten miles.

Six clock hours later, the fire was weak, and the reflector’s light beam could not reach beyond three thousand yards. The Black Fog had already engulfed up to a hundred yards of the lighthouse, and though many monsters below had dispersed, a portion still attacked the structure.

A few monsters tried climbing the lighthouse to extinguish the detestable fire, but the scent emitted by the blue marrow ash caused them extreme aversion, and none made it to the top.

Seven clock hours later, the fire went out.

Only thick ashes remained in the fire basin.

Those were the embers of the fire and also of the warriors.

Rod collected these embers and decided to bury them in the Dream Realm, to let them witness his growth.

I will never let you down.

Rod looked into the distance, feeling as if a fire was pulsing within his chest.

The Black Fog had already enveloped the lighthouse. The monsters, uninterested in the lifeless dead, had mostly scattered, with only a few lingering nearby.

Inside the lighthouse, lamps containing the residual light were placed, and the severely injured were properly settled. The entrance at the top of the lighthouse was sealed, a call for help had been sent, and there were special ventilation holes inside. The stored supplies were enough to sustain them for a long time, and they could definitely hold out until rescue arrived.

The throng of refugees had long since disappeared. The downfall of Laisuo City had been so abrupt that the peak number of survivors reached the lighthouse region for only a short duration, concentrated in those few clock hours, and then there were no more.

Anyone who did not make it had perished in the darkness.

A deeper Black Fog came rushing at him, with fine black dust tumbling within the mist. The true darkness had breached Laisuo City, spreading to the inner defensive lines, and this vast area had been swallowed up, becoming a playground for monsters to run amok.

Rod’s body radiated a faint red glow, the Red Tear Stone, which could partially resist the corruption of the Black Fog and was useful for fighting in environments without light.

He knew it was time to leave now since a fire warrior would only bring danger to the survivors inside the tower.

The majority of the wandering monsters nearby were Black Death Beasts with high defensive power and thick Spiritual Energy. Sealing Spirit Bullets couldn’t inflict effective damage, and it was difficult for Rod to kill them alone.

Using the "Sixth Layer Melody" was pointless, as they were merely Mature Level monsters, not special ones with a "Source."

Both the "Sixth Layer Melody" and the "Awakening" were last resorts, not to be used until the right moment.

Perhaps I could take a look near Laisuo City. Maybe I’ll encounter a special monster?

With the Resurrection Stone, Rod was not afraid of danger; his only fear was not finding his target.

Rod jumped down from the lighthouse and ran in the direction from which the refugees had come.

With the aid of the Eye of the Soul, Rod avoided many dangers and quickly left the lighthouse area.

Along the way, he saw a large number of bodies lying on the road, some killed by monsters, others corrupted and dead due to the Black Fog.

After being attacked by one of the resurrected corpses, Rod knew that these bodies had to be cremated. The Black Fog had taken residence within them, and they would soon all turn into Living Corpses.

Everything alive, or once alive, would be eroded and corrupted by the Black Fog, eventually turning into indescribable things.

But Rod had no means of lighting a fire, and natural flames could not ignite in the darkness.

This task had to be left to the armies from the Royal City.

Rod could only try to stay further from the main roads and kill all the Living Corpses he encountered.

These once-human monsters would turn to ash when killed, just like monsters. Perhaps, this is the dividing line between humans and monsters—humans are natural existences of life, while monsters are twisted congealments; once the foundation supporting their existence disappeared, they would turn to dust.

The souls obtained from them varied greatly depending on the level of body corruption; some were large or small fragments of the soul, some were "Living Corpse’s Soul," and very rarely one would be the soul of a specific person.

Is this a difference in the level of corruption? Rod wondered.

The stronger one was in life, the slower the corruption? The weaker the strength, the deeper the erosion, the more it tended towards uniformity?

Does corruption erase their unique marks and transform them into cursed life uniformly? Is that it?

Rod pondered as he continued to walk,

The closer to Laisuo City, the denser the bodies became, radiating out and present on every path.

Rod also noticed that the combat power of the Living Corpses varied greatly; some were just dust on the battlefield, while others had reached Mature Level, High Rank.
