Chapter 216: Chapter 158 The Golden Shining Valkyrie
When Rod returned to the hidden base, he discovered that Soron, the instructor of the "Top Class," was no longer there. In his place, training the students, was the golden-shining Valkyrie, Teresa.
This spirited Miss seemed to command some authority among the group of elites. Even some of the more unruly guys followed her instructions, dragging a rubber resistance band three yards thick while standing on sliding discs.
"Big Bear, there’s something wrong with the way you’re exerting force. How many times have I told you, don’t over-invert your ankles, it will reduce the support for the inner longitudinal arch, thereby decreasing torque and explosive power. When your Spiritual Energy of Enhancement exceeds fifty thousand moments, the ground’s counteractive force absorption will decrease, and you don’t want to take a step only to snap your half foot off, do you?"
"Hawkeye, put some more effort into it, pull the resistance band to twenty yards! Not a yard less."
"Sister Jessica, you can’t execute the arm movement like that, you’ll hit your own chest..."
Clad in golden helm and red armor, Teresa patrolled the upper training field, correcting every minute detail in their movements like an instructor.
Students, regardless of gender, were all engaged in strength training.
Everyone was drenched in sweat, but no one had any complaints. Physical fitness was extremely important; a physique too frail could not bear the burden of powerful Spiritual Energy.
When Rod stepped into the training field, Teresa spotted him immediately.
"Little Rod, you’re back. Before he left, Instructor Soron specially arranged your training regimen. Come on over."
Having long been known as the "Valkyrie," Teresa had fiery red hair, a clean and fair complexion, delicate eyebrows, a petite nose, cherry-like lips, and eyes as clear blue as crystal. She looked quite charming when she smiled, but Rod knew she was actually the strongest in close physical combat in the entire "Top Class."
She was always the one to pair with Instructor Soron during combat demonstrations, and their furious and rapid offense and defense made Rod’s head spin as he ran laps nearby.
She was also the only acquaintance in this "Top Class" that Rod could actually talk to.
Of course, it wasn’t that they deliberately isolated Rod; it was just that Rod himself was very busy. He had to train, study the dream realm, and learn languages with Professor Bins; he simply had no spare time, let alone join them on their missions.
And the only chance for interaction during combat training found Rod completely out of their league, doing basic training every day and having no topics for conversation with those undergoing advanced training, which made exchanging ideas impossible.
It was only Teresa, because Soron had given her the responsibility of supervising Rod’s classes, who got to know him a bit better.
"Today, it’s Sister Teresa who’s training us," Rod said, exhaling a sigh of relief. He had promised Soron to make up for the classes he missed and was feeling uneasy about it. He hadn’t expected Soron to be absent.
"Maybe it could be a bit easier now."
But he celebrated too soon.
Unexpectedly, Teresa didn’t show any favour to him as an acquaintance and trained him ruthlessly.
"Your leg! Are you not afraid of clamping your third leg off using Spiritual Energy like that?"
"I’ve said it many times, sense the invisible connection between Spiritual Energy and consciousness, and control the formation and release of power."
"Put more strength into it, that’s too weak! My five-year-old sister can hit harder than you."
Teresa was very strict during training, completely opposite to her usual gentle and polite image.
Rod never imagined he would one day miss the presence of Soron, even though he had a lot of physical contact with Miss Teresa. But the Valkyrie wore her armor year-round, cold and hard, not enticing at all.
However, tough as the training was, he gritted his teeth and completed it meticulously.
Teresa said with approval, "Your willpower is good, worthy of being the ’Black Glutton.’"
Damn it, I must change this nickname.
Others are the golden-shining Valkyrie, why should I be stuck with ’Black Glutton’?
And always somehow tied to the sewers to boot.
After the training ended, Rod, with a near-fainting will, distributed the special products he brought back from Green Grass Town to everyone.
It’s important to build good relationships with fellow trainees; you never know when you might have to partner up with them in the future. When the time comes and Rod shouts, "Don’t kill, I’m coming!" they might remember the gift he gave today, hesitate for a moment, and that gift would not have been in vain.
The plan was very successful, and Rod’s small gifts won him some favor.
"Ah, I love Green Grass tea the most."
"This blue-flowered vine is really pretty."
"Genuine turnip seed oil, so fragrant, thank you, Little Mister Rod."
There were thirty-three students in the Top Class, with twelve currently out on missions. Rod handed those twelve gifts to Teresa to give to them on his behalf.
Teresa gladly accepted and informed him of his training tasks for the next few days.
To Rod’s surprise, not only was Instructor Soron absent, but so were theory teacher Chucher and Soul Master Priscilla.
Teresa told him that they had gone back to fulfill their duties.
Most of Jinworth Academy’s teachers held part-time positions, and even the full-time ones would rotate into the battlefield.
Soron was a high-ranking Knight of the Knight Order, Teacher Chucher was the Guardian of the First Defense Zone, and Teacher Priscilla was a combat nun of the Holy Church.
They would come to teach during their recovery periods, both to instruct students and to restore their Spiritual Energy.
As soon as their recovery was complete, they would return to their respective posts until their next rest period.
Hearing this, an idea suddenly struck Rod.
Couldn’t I do the same?
Return to the secret base to study and learn during my Spiritual Energy recovery period and immediately carry out missions with the Hunter Group when the recovery’s done.
An opportunity for growth and learning without missing a beat.
Ha ha ha, that’s what you call playing it smart.
Rod immediately shared his idea with Teresa.
Teresa smiled and said, "Well, how about this: You stay at the base for three days, and if you can complete all the training, I’ll grant you three days of leave."
"What if I manage to keep it up?"
"Then I’ll keep granting it."
"Fine, it’s a deal, and Valkyries can’t go back on their word."
Teresa gently patted his shoulder, her smile soft and eyes curving into crescents, making her look particularly adorable.
"Do your best, Little Rod. Six days’ worth of lessons in three days is going to be quite the pressure."
"Humph, don’t worry, I’m definitely going to complete it," Rod said confidently.
If it came down to it, he could forgo sleep, as he had the Dream Rocking Chair which allowed him to quickly recover from fatigue and replenish his energy.
"Also, Teresa, stop calling me ’little.’ I’m going to grow up quickly, not just in age and height, but in strength and skill."
Teresa, who was about to leave, turned around, her smile somewhat obscure in the light coming in from the side.
"Then it’s settled, grow up fast. Jessica and the others are waiting for you to come to their rescue, Big Brother Rod."
With a soft chuckle, she left the training ground.
