The Last King Of Darkness -
Chapter 107 - 81 King of the Sewers
Chapter 107: Chapter 81 King of the Sewers
In the following days, Rod spent his time in the sewers.
He purposely came to the Iron Cross District in the Outer City District and settled down in a tavern there.
In the Royal City, each district had at least one square, a tavern, and a church, serving as gathering places for the public.
And the tavern was the only place that offered accommodation.
This tavern was located near the Defense Department of the Iron Cross District; its Defense Chief, Big Scarface, was an acquaintance of Rod’s.
Big Scarface had a very good impression of Rod and planned to look for various monster hunting opportunities with him.
Additionally, he was quite familiar with the sewers of the Iron Cross District, which were also quite far from the sewers of the Inner City District, so the terrifying spider swarms would not come here.
Big Scarface welcomed Rod’s arrival and was very indignant about Rod’s experiences.
After completing the Plague Demon hunting mission, he specifically submitted a commendation report upwards, but instead of the expected praise, he received a huge reprimand and a punishment.
The Internal Affairs Court believed he had inappropriately hired someone without combat qualifications to participate in a dangerous hunting mission, violating military laws and showing dereliction of duty.
The Royal City’s Military War Department had no choice but to issue him a verbal warning and cancelled the additional reward.
Big Scarface and his good friend Keith were so angry that they felt like exploding.
The two stormed into the Military War Department, flipping tables, and nearly fought with the Judge who had come to conduct the war conference.
But even so, this did not change the established fact.
Defense Chief Muso promised to give them an explanation and asked them to go back first.
Big Scarface could only return to the Defense Department of the Iron Cross District in a rage.
The recent defense tasks were extremely heavy; even though the academy students assigned to his department were all those who stayed on campus, the defense situation was still stretched thin. He had already been called for emergency deployment nine times in a row yet still managed to have twenty students seriously injured, with one suffering irreversible damage.
Big Scarface had filed hundreds of reports requesting additional personnel, all to no avail.
The Royal City was nowhere insufficient of people.
Many Defenders, Guardians, and Fire Guardians had gone to support the front lines, so the main defense force in the Royal City now consisted of tens of thousands of students and teachers from Jinworth Academy.
As the weather worsened, the monsters’ activity increased, and the pressure on defense sharply rose. News of injuries and casualties among teachers and students came from everywhere, and Doomsday believers also began to stir, poisoning, extinguishing lights, and snuffing out fires among other endlessly emerging problems.
In the Iron Cross District, there was some kind of disturbance in the sewers which, unknown to all, kept pushing monsters up from the depths, forcing the Outer City District’s Defense Department to form an elite battle group to come and clear the sewers.
It was because of this operation that the follow-up Plague Demon hunting mission came about.
The only consolation was that, in the end, there were no casualties among the personnel or residents.
Afterward, according to the joint investigation by the Jinwoosi Society and the Ash Diggers School, it was believed that some deep-level disturbance in the Spirit Realm startled the balance in the dark depths, leading to changes in the originally stable monster groups. The squeezed-out monsters had no choice but to move to new locations.
This led to a large number of monsters coming to the upper levels.
As to why such a disturbance in the Spirit Realm occurred, scholars had no consensus and could only assume it was some kind of accidental event.
Although the elite battle group cleared a large part of the sewer district, the balance disturbance did not end, and some sporadic monsters continued to appear.
Scholars believed that the disturbance might last one to two months before finding a new equilibrium and settling down again.
For this reason, the defense of the sewers became a heavy burden, weighing down on Big Scarface and causing him a lot of stress.
At this time, Rod’s arrival felt to him like the appearance of an angel from legends.
Big Scarface smiled so wide that the scars on his face seemed to split open, and he wished he could hug Rod and kiss him fiercely.
Of course, Rod refused.
He told Big Scarface that he had become a covert operative for special students (reserve), obtained combat qualifications, and could participate in defense combat.
But Big Scarface didn’t care about that at all.
Even if Rod had nothing, he was determined to welcome him.
What were a few punishments compared to the lives of warriors and the safety of residents?
What did it matter if he lost his position? He could still hunt monsters with the Hunter Group.
Therefore, he listed all the sewer defense tasks as open missions, hiring the freelance combatant Rod to complete them.
In this way, each task completed could accumulate merits and honors for Rod, which would greatly benefit him in future when promoting to a higher Combat Level, electing for High Rank positions, and accessing rare resources, among others.
He originally wanted to pair Rod with some combat personnel, but the manpower in the Iron Cross District was too tight. Everyone with a bit of fighting ability had gone into combat. All logistics, medical, supply, miscellaneous, and clerical tasks were undertaken by ordinary people.
In the entire Defense Department, only Big Scarface was a combatant; he was the last card to play when any patrol team member encountered a problem that even the Guardians couldn’t solve.
He was the last hope in case of danger for frontline personnel.
He could only be stationed at the Defense Department and was unable to go elsewhere.
However, to his great surprise, a few days later, Rod managed to complete all the tasks in the Iron Cross District’s sewers and provided a large amount of ash, Monster Ash, and mission footage as evidence according to the regulations.
Big Scarface was so amazed that the big scar on his face nearly fell off.
