Chapter 94: [Bonus Chapter] Family (1)

Rafael knew to move with caution and was prepared for any sly tricks his uncle might have. He expected his uncle would try to go after his weaknesses which would only be his mother. His father could take care of himself and Rafael would bet his manor that his father was already dealing with his relatives.

"This town was always sort of peaceful. I don’t need my brother, mother, or father to ruin it for any of us. Still, I can’t help but wonder if my mother has finally decided to stop following my father’s lead and see her grandchild. She disappointed me with some of the things she said over the years, but I have loved her dearly in the past," said Beatrice.

"Would you like to take a trip to visit a friend out of town?" River asked, taking a glass a maid placed on the table to start pouring Beatrice something to drink. With her gone, she would be out of reach from her brother visiting her when he came to see Rafael.

"That means you are looking to fight my family and you want me out of the way. I have done enough running away from them. I am no longer young and afraid of them. If I run, I have to leave the two of you to deal with it and I do not want that. Besides, neither of you knows my family better than I do. I know many of their secrets that should still be valuable today. The two of you must promise me that you will not do anything behind my back. Promise," Beatrice said, staring down Rafael first.

Beatrice lost her patience with Rafael looking away from her. "Look at me, Rafael!" She raised her voice. This was no time for them to be ignoring her.

Beatrice didn’t care that there was the present and former commander of knights sitting beside her. When they were at home with her, they were just her husband and son.

River reached out his right foot to step on Rafael’s shoe.

Rafael sighed, giving in to what his parents wanted and turned to face his mother. "I promise," he said.

"Good," Beatrice smiled, turning to River who nodded his head without any complaints. "We fight as a family and you will hear my voice for many days if you go behind my back. Now, no more talking about my family. They are not here yet, but they are already ruining my day. You need to drink and eat something," she said, pushing the glass of juice River poured for her to give to Rafael.

"I already had-"

"You can’t be telling Annalise to eat when you do not want to eat or did you only have Charles bring food so Annalise could eat? You are making it really hard for me to believe you, son," Beatrice said, picking up a slice of apple to eat. "Eat something before I call her outside."

"Do you focus on my life because your life with my father is boring?" Rafael asked, seeing that as the only reason she could be so interested. She was starting to be like Edgar’s mother. Too invested in who he would marry and his relationships with women.

"Life with me is never boring," River answered, giving Beatrice a look.

Rafael closed his eyes, feeling ready to leave. He did not want to witness them showing each other love.

"Do not act like we are disgusting you," Beatrice said, playfully hitting Rafael’s shoulder. "One day you will understand what I have been telling you for years. Now, eat. I can’t have you visit me and not eat something. Are you free to stay for dinner? It wasn’t long ago your father and I were thinking about inviting you over and me cooking."

It was Rafael’s turn to give his father a look that said he needed to get his wife to change her mind.

Beatrice’s mouth fell open for a moment, but she quickly closed it to not be unladylike. "I cannot believe the two of you want to act like you did not enjoy my cooking. You survived, didn’t you?"

"There are plenty of people who survive by roasting meat over the fire and not caring about the taste. To survive, you must stomach the taste. Devouring it does not mean we like it. It means we are desperate," Rafael explained.

River coughed to hide his laughter. He couldn’t be honest about the cooking, but Rafael was always here to state the truth.

"Watch it, River. Rafael gets to leave and sleep in his bed tonight, while you might find yourself standing outside your own without a pillow. I will not waste my precious time cooking for either one of you when you do not appreciate it," Beatrice said, angrily placing the apple in her mouth.

She had spent many days learning to cook for nothing. It was not her fault that for the first years of her life, she had been pampered, and then she suddenly had to learn to take care of not only herself but a son and a husband.

"We appreciate it when you do both," Rafael said, trying to touch his mother’s hand, but she pulled it away from him. "If you want to cook, you can," he added to cheer her up. When that time came, he would drink something strong to mask the taste.

"You have not eaten what I have cooked in a long time to know how much better it has become. Your father just jokes about it to upset me, but it is truly better. I will also bake for us. Oh, I forgot cooking could be this exciting," Beatrice said, excited to start planning the dinner. "Since Annalise is your maid, it would only be fair to invite her to this dinner. Rumours won’t spread since we will be the only ones there."

"Maids talk," Rafael reminded his mother. Not all maids were loyal to their employers and kept what they saw to themselves. They liked to talk and they were fired when caught. There were a few cases where servants were killed for trying to get money from their employers in exchange for keeping their mouths shut.

"Then I will send them home before you arrive and we will serve ourselves. I always have a way, Rafael. Let me know when you are not busy worrying about the kingdom and I will invite you over. It must be quick before you need to up and leave again. Eat quickly so Annalise isn’t left alone for so long," Beatrice said, shifting her body to try looking through the glass door to see Annalise.

It had to be boring to sit around at a table alone while everyone else was outside. Now that they were finished speaking about her family, she wanted to speak with Annalise about Delilah to let her know that nothing was going to happen to her.

Then Beatrice wanted to show off the work she and River did in the garden. Soon they could decrease the money they spent on vegetables at the market. There were a few that were already ripe, so Rafael or Annalise could take them. They could not deny it, saying that it didn’t taste good since it wasn’t something she cooked.
