Chapter 89: First day (2)

Annalise took a deep breath to prepare for what awaited her on the other side of the door. Her first day as Rafael’s maid was already off to a weird start, but it could get better from here once she got used to him. She was still curious if he thought she was an intruder earlier.

’I need to make noise next time,’ Annalise noted. Rafael would continue to be suspicious if she was light on her feet each time. She could not believe that the skill she had perfected would have to stop.

Annalise opened the bathroom door, hoping Rafael was wearing a shirt this time. She did not want to be constantly averting her gaze from him so pervert could become a nickname for her again.

Annalise exited the bathroom and left the door open for Rafael, who sat on his bed. He was looking out the window before she came out, but now that she was out, he turned his attention to her. "Your bath is ready. You should use it now while the water is warm. Is there anything else I can do for you?"

"Did Mavis tell you why you got this job? Why I suddenly decided to have a maid by my side?" Rafael asked. He wanted her to know from the start that Delilah was looking to do something to her, and that was why she had to stay close to him until he dealt with it.

"She mentioned Delilah being after me. Over the dress, or is there something else I do not know about?" Annalise asked since Delilah would have to be bored if she was going to plan something that had Rafael so worried that he had to take her as his maid.

Delilah wanted her dress, but she stopped her, and now it was time to get over what happened. Annalise had stopped thinking about it from that day until now. If she knew Delilah was going to be so angry, she would have just sent Laura back with no dress.

"It is about the dress and something more," Rafael answered.

"I see. Well, thank you for wanting to keep me safe," Annalise said. She wasn’t worried about what Delilah would try to do, but since she had other things to focus on, she would let Rafael take care of this. It was because of him that Delilah was acting as she did. That and the fact that Delilah was childish.

Rafael stood up from his bed to go to the bathroom before the water turned cold. "You don’t seem worried when you should be. Delilah alone is harmless, but if she uses her family name, she is a threat."

"Since you know her so well and it feels like she has always been this obsessed over you, why did you allow her to keep coming around? You could have saved yourself from having to protect me. Sorry," Annalise apologised for speaking so casually

"I am not the king," Rafael said, walking by Annalise. "I don’t mind all of you speaking freely to me. I simply do not like when you come to me to talk about your little feuds and lecture me as if you are my mother."

"Mavis says we must be careful with how we speak to you. You are not the king, but you are still Rafael Callahan. Your name is known throughout the kingdom and beyond it," said Annalise.

"Beyond it? Have you been outside the kingdom to know that is true?" Rafael asked, holding the bathroom door open.

"I am just following what the rumours say," Annalise lied. His name had reached her home, and they did not consider themselves to be part of the kingdom. Everyone had heard the Callahan name more than once.

"There are plenty of rumours about me, and many of them are not true. Now that you are my maid, try not to listen to them. Sit anywhere you like and rest your feet until I am finished," Rafael said and then he closed the door.

Annalise sighed in relief now that he was finally gone. She looked at his bed but knew if Mavis were to walk in and see her sitting on it, she would never hear the end of it. Annalise decided to use one of the chairs at the small table in her room. She chose the one that allowed her to look out at the gates.

"Two more days until I can see Thomas," she muttered.

Thomas would never believe that she was now Rafael’s personal maid. Thomas would worry about her being alone with Rafael first, and then he would start coming up with ideas to kill Rafael and get her out of there quickly.

Annalise would surprise him with the fact that she was not planning on killing Rafael anytime soon. There was still so much to learn about this war from this side, including the secrets Rafael used to train his men. Then there was the king’s upcoming visit.

’Why hasn’t anyone been talking about the king?’ Annalise now realised.

She had not been in the market to hear what the people there were saying, and the maids had not brought up the king once. Shouldn’t the town be excited that the king would make a long trip to this town? Was she missing something?

Annalise continued to look out the window at the people passing the gates and some of the knights already running around to stay in shape. If she had known that women could be knights, she would not have become a maid. Being a knight would have allowed her to be present when some plans were made.

Annalise was so focused on watching what was happening on the outside that she had not noticed how much time had passed. Not until the bathroom door opened.

Annalise looked away from the window and got to her feet quickly.

"You can go outside until I get dressed. Unless-"

"I will step outside," Annalise replied, rushing to the door so she would not see anything she should not. She was going to keep her eyes away from his body so he would not think she was sneaking glances at him.

Annalise opened the door and stepped outside to give Rafael privacy. She closed the door behind her and rested her back on it. "Why does it feel like he is toying with me?" Annalise muttered.

At first, Rafael did not speak much. He would stare at everyone and keep to himself, but now that she was around him more, she noticed that he liked to joke around. More than she would like since she was becoming his entertainment.

Annalise looked down both sides of the halls to make sure no one was there with her. Her being alone presented the opportunity for anyone passing by to speak about how she must be feeling herself right now. Annalise did not like that statement since it made her think of other things.

Her mind then went to Cara, who was not working today because of what happened yesterday after she left with Mavis. Annalise was still uncertain of how it started, but she was told Cara got into a small argument with one of the other maids present, and Mavis punished the two of them by having them not work today, which meant they would lose out on a day of pay.

Annalise guessed Cara’s argument had something to do with her. It was no coincidence that right after she was told she was Rafael’s personal maid, Cara got into a fight.

Annalise appreciated Cara’s loyalty to her. They only knew each other for a little over two weeks, but from the beginning, Cara offered her advice and answered any questions she had about the town or Rafael without ever being annoyed.

’I have to do something to thank her. A dress would do the trick,’ Annalise decided.

"Oh!" Annalise gasped as her body started to fall backwards as the door she was leaning on opened. She reached out to the sides to grab something to hold onto but felt Rafael’s hands on her back and shoulder to stop her from falling. "Thank you," she softly spoke, standing up straight. "I shouldn’t have been leaning on the door."

"You shouldn’t have," Rafael agreed, letting go of her and stepping outside his room.

Annalise stared at him in disbelief. Yes, that was her mistake, but he didn’t have to agree on it. Annalise frowned, regretting her decision to let him live when she found him sitting on the ground with his eyes closed.

"We will be leaving to visit my mother after breakfast. Be at the door as soon as I am finished with breakfast. You are safe while we are still in my home, so you can do whatever you want until it is time to leave. Just don’t get yourself into trouble," Rafael said.

Annalise watched him leave, fixing the sleeves of his shirt as he walked. "How many times must I say that someone else brings trouble to me?"
