The Knight's Mysterious Maid
Chapter 71: Not drunk (1)

Chapter 71: Not drunk (1)

Annalise was not prepared for the awkwardness that soon fell on her and Rafael the moment they stopped talking. There was a good reason why you should not be casually speaking to the person who paid you.

Rafael had made a detour to get a bottle of wine from the kitchen and to Annalise’s surprise, he took up two glasses. She wasn’t serious about drinking with him and she didn’t think he would have taken her seriously since what maid and employer would drink together?

Rafael led Annalise to a door that opened to a balcony. From here, they could look out and see the bonfire the knight and maid still present had made. If you looked on forward, you could see the lights coming from the festival in town.

"I still think that you were sneaking up to the second floor for another reason," Rafael said as he sat down on the balcony wall.

Annalise smiled, trying to appear as innocent as she could. She thought the story of looking for a maid to spend time with had worked but of course, Rafael was not easy to fool. She had a feeling that her being a woman and a mere maid helped him thought that she wasn’t sneaking around because of him.

"Is there someone you were looking to scare? After you promised you would put an end to that?" Rafael asked. He placed a glass in front of Annalise and then began to open the bottle of wine he personally picked out.

"I promise you that I was not going there to scare anyone-"

"The wide eye look when you saw that I was there tells me otherwise," Rafael said, still suspicious of her going up to the second floor.

Annalise bit her tongue.

"I will fire you if you do it again," Rafael said. His words of him being strict applied to everyone.

"Am I allowed to speak freely?" Annalise asked since there was something on her mind now that he spoke of being fired.

Rafael peered at Annalise. "Isn’t that what you have been doing all now?"

"Kind of. Did the maid you see me with yesterday speak of the snake or anything else before then?" Annalise wanted to know if it was Rafael who Aria went to.

Rafael began to fill Annalise’s glass. "Is she your friend?"

"She was," Annalise answered, leaving it at that since Rafael did not need to know that it was because of his mother that she and Aria were no longer friends. She was not here to gossip about her ruined friendships.

"She did approach me after my dinner with my friends. You are not to come to me with baseless assumptions. If there is anyone to claim you have a relationship with. It is Logan," Rafael said.

Annalise almost choked on her spit as she tried to think of the relationship she had with Logan. Was Rafael blind, or was Logan going around saying there was something between them? If it was the latter, he should prepare to be introduced to her fist. "I don’t even consider myself to be his friend. I try to avoid him as much as I can. No offense," she added, since this was Rafael’s friend and knight they were talking about.

Rafael found the chance of Logan having a relationship with Annalise to be low, but Logan was quite the charmer. He could pull off the unexpected. Rafael wasn’t fond of the relationship happening since it meant he had to be around a woman who loved scaring others for a long time. Logan would always be part of his life, which meant he would be around Logan’s wife many times.

Rafael didn’t see a blossoming relationship between Annalise and Logan since this was not the first time Logan saw a pretty woman and became infatuated with her. Logan had a habit of liking it when women turned down his advances, and once they finally returned his feelings, he would lose interest.

"Your words did not anger me. I would love it if my knights and maids would stay away from each other so life would not become complicated. I am the one who has to deal with you being distracted and complaints from Mavis," Rafael said.

"You have nothing to worry about when it comes to me. I am not here looking for a relationship. I am just here to work," Annalise promised.

Annalise picked up the glass of wine Rafael had prepared for her. If anyone were to see them now, more rumors would start about something being between them, but luckily, with Rafael’s warning, nothing could be said out loud.

Something in the back of her mind was screaming not to drink the wine since she could become drunk if she had too much, and Rafael was meant to be the one becoming drunk, but Annalise could not help her curiosity about the taste of the wine. She did not have the opportunity since she arrived to taste their wine.

’How different was it from what they drank to have a good time back at home?’ She wondered.

Ignoring the voice of reason in her head, Annalise brought the glass to her lips and sipped away the wine in one go. Her eyes widened at the sweet taste as she licked her lips to get every drop.

Rafael had not been able to drink since he had halted when Annalise drank her share in one go, and then she resembled a child who had just eaten the sweet candy at the festival for the very first time. "More?" He asked, holding out the bottle to pour more for her.

Annalise gladly welcomed more of it. She knew this was probably the stupidest thing she had ever done, but she enjoyed the taste. It was no wonder they kept these bottles locked away so the servants or their guests could not get their hands on them. There was a slightly better taste to what she had drank at home.

"You should drink it slowly," Rafael advised her since she might choke from how fast she was drinking it.

"Right." Annalise nodded her head in agreement. "I do not want to be drunk in front of my employer."

Rafael stopped once more, just as the glass touched his lips. He turned the label of the bottle to face him so that he could read it and make sure he had picked the right one. There was no alcohol in this bottle. He saw it as more of a juice that came in a fancy bottle than a good wine.

He would only drink wine with guests, the knights, or Edwin if he was in the mood. Rafael wasn’t trying to get Annalise drunk while she was alone with him. Some would already question why they were alone together, but he needed the company at the moment to stop thinking about war.

Rafael thought of telling her there was no way she could get drunk, but then he was curious about how she would act while thinking she might be drunk. There was hardly a dull moment with her, and if he kept silent for a moment, he would find himself entertained.
