Chapter 68: Together (1)
"It doesn’t seem like nothing. Were you picking up rocks when we were down by the river? You have a strange hobby, but the new rock does add a bit of color to your desk. The other rock looks boring," Logan said, looking at the larger of the two. It was just there, adding nothing to the table, yet Rafael would have anyone’s head if they moved it.
"What more is there that you need to tell or ask me, Logan?" Rafael asked.
"There are many things I want to tell you, but first, is it true that we are going to be sent to the border? It’s a terribly long journey, and then those cocky bastards there never want to admit that they needed our help. I say let those barbarians wipe them out first, and then we come in with the clean up," said Logan. The knights never got along with the guards at the border.
"Do not let anyone here hear you say that. They are still on our side since we fight to protect this kingdom. As of right now, there has been no message for the knights to march out, and with all the new men who have joined us, we are not ready to leave. Unless the situation is dire, I am not leading all of you to the border," Rafael answered, tapping his fingers on his desk, as there was still an issue.
"We might need to leave to protect the king. The Hensons are causing trouble. Grant Henson seems to want his granddaughter to be taken as the king’s woman since the kingdom has no heir right now. They control a large portion of the king’s army. Should they make a move, we must march out right away. Have a letter sent to the young Henson brothers. I want to know if they are all on Grant’s side," Rafael said.
Should the king ever need to fight against Grant, it would be a bloody situation. It was a fight the kingdom did not need when their focus should have been on the border.
"The queen needs to have an heir, and then the old man would shut up. We’ve been without a prince for too long. It is surprising that people have not yet started complaining. I am aware the king loves the queen, but he might have to make the difficult decision to have another woman."
As much as Tobias annoyed Rafael, he didn’t want it to come to another woman being the one to birth the next king instead of the queen herself. The queen and king had already dealt with enough in the early days of their relationship.
"You are lucky," Logan said, falling down onto one of Rafael’s couches and spreading his body out to get comfortable enough to sleep. "When you marry, you don’t have so much responsibility to have a child right away. Other than the fact that we expect you to raise the next commander of the Callahan knights. Your grandfather, father, you, and then your son. It will be a great legacy."
"Do not hold your breath that the next commander of the Callahan knights will be my son. I didn’t become a knight to carry on what my father started. I did it because it is what I enjoy. Have a son and I will make him the commander if he is good enough," Rafael proposed. He didn’t earn this title because of his father. He had to work for it. If he were to ever have a son, this title would never be guaranteed.
Rafael was one to believe you needed to be worthy of the title you had. There were many nobles he thought should lose their titles.
Logan liked the sound of that. "All I need now is the woman who will have my sons. I have one in mind, but she’s playing hard to get."
Rafael looked up from the drawer he had opened. He narrowed his eyes at Logan, who was grinning like a fool more than he normally did. "Please tell me you are not talking about the maid named Annalise."
"Who else? I have been working hard to get close to her, but she’s turning down my advances. I like the challenge. It will be fun to see her eat her words when we are together," Logan said, smiling as he imagined how embarrassed she would be to look back on how she tried to avoid him now.
Rafael didn’t understand how Logan could think of her possibly having a son for him when he had not known Annalise for long. Did he really want a woman who might put a snake in your bed when you pissed her off?
Logan wasn’t much of a snake lover, nor was he fond of insects. There were many complaints from Logan when they would pick any spot to rest for the night when they were away from home.
"You have not known her for long. I wouldn’t go planning to have a child with her when you know nothing about her," Rafael advised Logan.
"I know enough. She’s pretty, her personality is something, and seeing her get angry when I call her by her nickname is funny. It’s no different than all of those young women who wish to marry you but know nothing about you. They see a handsome face, a good title, and money. It is enough for them to see themselves spending the rest of their lives with you. I am like that with Annalise," Logan said, sitting up as he thought of going to pester Annalise.
"Then you are a fool," Rafael muttered. He wasn’t an expert when it came to love, but falling for someone you just met without knowing much about them was the start of a disaster.
The women who were looking to court him fell in love with his image, not the person he truly was. There was more to him than his looks and the few conversations he had with someone. Rafael wasn’t fond of meeting someone two or three times and then claiming to be in love.
Men and women all over the kingdom would get married to each other after a few meetings because they were so caught up in the thrill of finding a partner. Then, once the vows were said, they finally learned about each other now that they had to spend countless hours together. The facade they put up to court each other melted since they could not keep up with pretending.
Rafael saw many people confused about where they went wrong with their marriages. Regardless of what anyone said about his father stealing his mother away from the man she was meant to marry, they were two people who slowly got to know each other and fell in love. His mother had given up her pampered life to be with his father, who had no wealth or title at the time.
"And you are also grumpy. I prefer when you are silent. When you speak, you ruin everyone’s happy thoughts. I am patiently waiting for you to be a fool in love," Logan said.
"Don’t hold your breath," Rafael muttered as he balled up another letter from his mother’s family. Another foolish invitation for him to meet them. He hoped his mother had not started to receive any. Her brother and parents had tormented and degraded her enough when she chose to marry below her status.
Before going to the border or going to help the king, Rafael was ready to march his men to his mother’s side of the family and slaughter all of them.
