The Knight's Mysterious Maid -
Chapter 65: The problem (2)
Chapter 65: The problem (2)
Annalise went her separate way from Heidi when she was finished hanging out her sheets. She walked with her basket full of rocks to drop off in her bedroom before going to clean a room on the second floor.
Annalise didn’t understand why there was so much to clean when Rafael didn’t have a guest spending the night or visiting for long, other than the duke or his mother. Still, she would rather do that than clean the messy rooms belonging to the knights.
Walking down the other side of the hallway Annalise walked, Aria abruptly stood wide eye at Annalise calmly walking around. After she told Mavis the maids were down by the river playing around with knights and Rafael, she expected they would all get in trouble. She was most eager about Annalise getting in trouble, but it didn’t seem like anything happened.
Aria stood still as Annalise continued to make her way down the hall while looking out the windows instead of at her. Aria thought Annalise was going to ignore her, but to her surprise, Annalise stopped right beside her with her eyes never leaving the windows.
"It was you, wasn’t it?" Annalise asked. The moment she saw Aria looked as if she saw a ghost, she had an inkling Aria might have sent Mavis down by the river.
"I did not send Mavis," Aria defended herself.
Annalise smiled as she looked away from the window. She was just assuming that it was Aria’s doing and Aria exposed herself right away. "I didn’t say anything about Mavis. You should have been my friend a little longer, Aria. I would have taught you some tricks. Like how not to expose yourself so quickly or how to execute a plan you come up with."
Aria bit her lip, wanting to slap her mouth for speaking so quickly. Annalise had always been intimidating and it caused her to speak without thinking.
"You say that I had you fooled, but you certainly fooled me. When I befriended you, I didn’t think you could be this person. To be so jealous that you would look to get others in trouble along with me," Annalise said.
Aria mustered up all her courage and said, "Yes, I sent her to the river. Do not be angry with me-"
"Oh, I am not angry with you," Annalise truthfully spoke. "They knew the risk of staying down there so long. If I had stayed there and was found by Mavis, that would be my own fault. You don’t anger me, Aria. You amuse me. I have not been so entertained for a while. Continue," she said, cheering Aria on.
Aria disliked this taunting attitude Annalise had. Constantly viewing her as a failure. "Do you think what you are doing will get you to stay here longer? Sooner or later, Rafael will pick a wife. You will not be able to flirt with him to get what you want."
Annalise tightened her hold on the basket in an effort to resist what her mind told her to do. It involved Aria’s tongue and a sharp blade. Thomas should give her a pat on the back for how well she controlled her desires. It wasn’t easy, but she had managed not to kill anyone yet.
Aria took a step back when Annalise’s gaze changed. She gulped and oddly found that it hurt when she did.
"You, why is it so hard for you to think someone else is better than you without assuming that they are using their body? I have not heard such assumptions from Laura of all people, but you who think because you lack in your appearance compared to others-"
"I am not insecure," Aria denied Annalise’s claim. Her hands trembled out of anger, and she wanted to do nothing more than hit Annalise with one of her fists to shut her up.
"You are insecure. You keep commenting that I use my looks when I have not. You are making everything about looks, and since you believe you lack in appearance, you must point to me as someone flirting with our employer and look to have me fired so you might have a chance to shine. You’ve made slick comments about Cara when she spoke of dressing up, and I thought then you were joking with me because you hated talking about dresses, but you weren’t,’ Annalise realised.
"I just feel that if it were Cara getting better jobs in place of me, you would be pointing your finger and saying she used her body to get ahead. It is annoying to hear you claim that I have any sort of relationship with Rafael when I have no interest in him. You are a beautiful woman, Aria," Annalise complimented, meaning every word.
She saw the looks Aria received from men, but Aria would claim those looks were not for her.
"You rival many of the women here with your looks, but just like you, we are not all using them to get better jobs. We are doing honest work, and you cannot just assume and keep repeating that there is something between me and Rafael. It will spread and people will believe it. How would you feel if I started making claims that there was something with you and Rafael even though there wasn’t?" Annalise asked.
What Aria was saying without any proof would have the young ladies who wanted Rafael coming after Annalise or giving Annalise a title amongst the maids or anyone else who heard it.
Aria didn’t respond since she did not want to make Annalise right.
"I would have respected you a tiny bit if you had answered, and I must give you a warning to not let that hand you have balled up go above your waist. I don’t take too kindly to being hit," Annalise said. She knew that Aria was itching to hit her because Aria’s hand shook and she looked like she wanted to take a step closer to her.
"I have been in trouble more than I have been given good jobs. Stop reading too much into what you do not know and trying to get me fired. There will be more maids soon. Get used to the fact that you will not always be picked. You should worry about the other girls finding out you sent Mavis to the river. Depending on my mood, I just might tell since you are running your mouth a lot lately," Annalise said, giving Aria a quick smile before walking off.
Before Annalise could leave her side, Aria reached out and pulled on the basket, causing it to fall and the rocks inside to scatter.
Annalise didn’t react to what Aria did. Instead, she looked down the hallway. "You know, recently I have had this bad luck where every step I take, the young master happens to be there. It looks like that is finally paying off."
Aria looked down the hall and realised they were not alone. It felt like her heart had dropped when she saw Rafael looking down at the rocks on the floor as he approached them.
Rafael looked up from the rocks that decorated the floor, to Annalise, who stood still as she watched him. She was calm, unlike the maid beside her. The very same maid who had annoyed him last night.
