The Knight's Mysterious Maid
Chapter 56: Conflict (3)

Chapter 56: Conflict (3)

Annalise mentally prepared herself for what was to come tonight. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she was hoping that she was wrong about something bad happening.

Annalise wanted a peaceful end to the day so that she could then fall onto her bed, cover herself in her new blanket, and go to sleep. It would be an added touch if the rain could fall tonight to make it feel like the nights back at home when she would fall asleep outside.

"Would it kill the two of you to talk and get this over with? The tension is sucking the air out of the room, and I am not good at holding my breath," Cara said, standing beside Annalise since she was alone at the moment. "A nice apology would fix all of this."

"I have nothing to apologise for. It is not my fault that I have been getting good tasks. I don’t want to talk about that now. We should concentrate since Mavis is on a hunt to kill anyone who messes up, and quite frankly, I don’t want to talk about this any other day. It is stupid," Annalise said, leaving Cara’s side

Annalise wished that everyone here understood that they could not do all the duties. Their day would come and when it didn’t, there was no need to get upset. Rafael had not long returned, so there wasn’t much to do yet, but she was certain more duties to give to maids would come in the future.

It wasn’t just her getting good jobs. Annalise heard that there were maids serving young women who came to see Rafael today. They were tasked with keeping those young women away from Rafael. Why was no one angry with those maids like they were with her? Was it really because she was new? Two weeks had gone by already.

Cara followed Annalise. "I am not saying it is you who needs to apologise. You are not the one who suddenly blew up today. I want Aria to realise how she was today and come say something to you. I can’t have the two of you fighting forever. The maids that I like are limited. Who will listen to me talk about the young master or the other knights?" Cara asked.

Annalise picked up two small jugs. One filled with water and the other with what smelled like orange juice. "Please, I beg you. Speak about men and relationships with anyone else. I am of no use to you," she said.

"Stop your chatter and take what you have in your hands out to the table," Mavis spoke loudly over the maids talking and clapped her hands. "Annalise and Cara, you are on drinks, so be careful not to spill anything on their clothes and get what they want as fast as possible. Edwin has picked out the finest drinks, and if you spill even a drop, it will come out of your pocket. As for the rest of you..."

Annalise drowned out the rest of what Mavis was saying since it did not concern her. ’I should come back and convince Jonah to let me try some of this orange juice," she said as she looked at him, standing with his hands on his hips and his favorite wooden spoon in the left hand. Jonah might kill if he were to ever lose it.

"Go now!"

Annalise started to move now that it was time to start serving Rafael and his guests. She walked side by side with Cara, who had to serve drinks along with her.

"So handsome," she heard Cara mutter when they entered the dining room.

Rafal sat at the head of the table with the duke to his right and the guard Annalise saw earlier was to his left. Then there was another man Annalise had not seen today sitting beside the guard. This dinner would be full of distractions for Cara who was meant to be focused not to spill any drink or even water.

Annalise went to stand behind the duke’s guard so she could keep an eye on Rafael and Edgar, while Cara stood behind the duke to keep watch on the two men opposite her. "There is water or orange juice right now, but I can get you anything else you would like from the kitchen" Annalise said, ready to serve them whatever they wanted.

If her father saw her now, he would kill all the men seated at the table and then probably kill her for serving them.

"I have fresh apple juice and red wine," said Cara.

Edgar peered at Annalise, who turned her head to look elsewhere when their eyes met for a second. It was a usual reaction sometimes, so he didn’t pay any mind to it. He turned his attention to Rafael and found himself entertained. Rafael might not have realised it, but he sat with folded arms watching the maid Edgar had looked at a moment ago.

Edgar would never think Rafael to be the type to find an interest in a maid since he had always stated he would never be intimate with his servants, but it seemed that had changed.

"What?" Rafael questioned when he noticed Edgar smiling while staring at him. That was never a good thing.

"Nothing-"

"Edgar!" Beatrice’s voice took over the dining room. Just like Rafael predicted, she found out Edgar was here and came just in time for dinner. "Rafael, how dare you not invite me and your father to this dinner when we don’t get to see Edgar often?"

"This is why you should not stay in the same town as your parents," Edgar whispered. He’d be damned if his mother would just walk into his home without any warning. Luckily, Beatrice was much better to be around than his mother, Priscilla Collins.

"Edgar, still without a ring on your finger, I see," Beatrice said, going straight to Edgar, who was like a second son to her. She always had a special place in her heart for him since he helped to bring Rafael out of his shell when they met at school.

"And I plan to keep it that way for a long time," Edgar replied.

Beatrice wasn’t happy to hear this. "What is wrong with all of you? Have you no intentions of giving your parents grandchildren to play with?"

"I plan on sending my mother a dog to act as her grandchild. She doesn’t like them, but knowing it is scaring her will make me happy," said Edgar.

"Why did I let you stay Rafael’s friend again? Especially after you encouraged him to run away when the two of you were younger? I almost had my husband ready to tear up this kingdom to find him, only to learn you took him to meet the prince. The king is the only one to get married. I don’t know what it would take to convince you two. Do not worry. I am not here to ruin your boys night," Beatrice said, tapping Edgar’s shoulder and then going to Rafael.

Beatrice bent down to give Rafael a hug. "Your father doesn’t want you to know that he brought me here, so he is outside. Don’t tell him that I betrayed him. I only came to see Edgar, but I must be on my way. Goodbye," she said, kissing Rafael’s cheek. She had to make the most of seeing him since he could suddenly leave for weeks. "Annalise!" She waved at the young woman she liked.

Annalise smiled, seeing Beatrice so happy to see her. Beatrice came, took over the room, and now left like she was never here.

"Would you like to switch mothers?" Edgar asked since he could deal with Beatrice better than his mother.

Rafael shook his head. Edgar’s mother took trying to get him married to another level.

Now that Beatrice was gone, there was something Edgar wanted to test out. "I could do with some orange juice. Come stand here between Rafael and me," Edgar said, looking directly at Annalise.

’See! I was standing still!’ Annalise internally screamed as her point was proven.
