Chapter 46: Bad luck (2)

Chapter 46: Bad luck (2)

"You want me to catch chickens?" Annalise asked in disbelief as she stared at the tiny creatures already running away from her.

Annalise knew Mavis hated to repeat herself, but she just needed to be clear on the fact that Mavis, for some reason, wanted her to chase after chickens.

"Have you lost your hearing since you were away? I just said you are to catch the chickens and put them away. You are to also collect the eggs that are scattered all over. Since you were away for so long, this is your punishment. Returning a dress to the young master should not have taken so long. I had to get someone else to do your work," Mavis loudly spoke with her hands on her hips.

They were already short on maids since Rafael and the knights had returned earlier, giving her and Edwin no time to hire more maids to deal with the knights, so Annalise’s absence was not welcomed.

Annalise stayed silent since she did return later than she intended to. If not for Delilah wanting her dress and then Rafael wanting to speak with her in private, she would have been on time and wouldn’t be dealing with chickens.

Annalise couldn’t tell Mavis about what happened with Delilah and she didn’t want to share meeting with Rafael, so she would do as Mavis told her since she wanted to prove she could do her work well. However, Annalise couldn’t help hating using that her family had a farm as a story for herself. Then she wouldn’t be running around behind chickens because Mavis thought she was used to it.

Mavis liked that the fact that Annalise did not complain like the others would. Not that their complaints would change anything. In her eyes, she was going easy on Annalise since her first punishment was to have Annalise clean the second floor by herself.

If not for there being a few moments where Annalise got under her skin, Mavis would take her under her wing like Laura and Tanya. Maids who were loyal and do just as she said to listen around to what the guests were saying and then repeat it to her or to get rid of a maid she didn’t like, but could not just fire. In return for their loyalty, there was special treatment and better jobs offered like being picked to serve certain guests.

"I expect that by evening there will be a basket of eggs in front of me to be used for the young master’s breakfast tomorrow and there won’t be any chickens running around," Mavis said and then turned to leave so she could get away from the horrid smell.

"Who is the fool to let out all of these chickens?" Annalise muttered, feeling drained just by looking at them walk around. There were eggs in random spots. Some with no chicken nearby and some she could see under chickens.

Annalise dropped the basket in her right hand. Before she could collect the eggs, she needed to put away the chickens, which would fight her when she tried to pick up the eggs. She could already feel the feathers from the chickens flapping their wings against her. "Listen up!"

Rafael, who happened to be on the training grounds, looked around when he heard a woman giving an order he was about to give to the men. A contest was coming up, and since King Tobias might be paying a visit, he wanted the knights to be ready to show off the power of the Callahan knights.

Rafael lazily swung his sword up and down for the knights to mimic. Across from the training ground, he saw many chickens out of their coop and Annalise, of all people, standing among them. It had been at least an hour since he spoke to her in private.

"What the hell is she doing?" Rafael muttered. Why was she alone with so many chickens? Did she plan to take one to scare someone? What happened to her promise? He expected her to fail, but not in an hour. "Christian, take over," he said to Christian, who stood with his eyes closed, almost falling asleep while standing.

Rafael dropped his sword onto the ground and walked toward Annalise and the chickens. His arrival would not save her from the chickens, but save the chickens who might get placed to scare someone.

"Anyone who tries to fight me will find themselves being slowly roasted over a fire. I will start that fire right here and eat you, so think twice," Annalise said, pointing her finger to a few who she already knew would be an issue because of the way they kept turning their heads side to side to get a good look at her as they got closer to her.

Rafael stopped in his tracks when he heard what she told the chickens. Though he wanted to know what she was doing here instead of doing her work, he was curious to see what would happen next. Unbeknownst to Rafael, the knights meant to be training were also watching what was happening.

"Since we can all agree that no one here wants to be eaten, we should all stay quiet and let the nice lady capture- I mean escort," Annalise corrected herself when a chicken she was positioning herself to catch, ran away from her. "I will take you back inside, where no wild animals or the dogs here can get you. So, just trust me and don’t attack me, or I will be your worst nightmare. Right there," Annalise said, lunging forward to pick up a chicken.

Annalise managed to grab a wing but had to close her eyes as the chicken cried out and flapped its wings, stirring up dust from the ground. Annalise held on to it despite the fact that something had gotten into her eye. She was not going to let go of it and be back to having no chickens put away.

She listened to the other chickens make a lot of noise as they ran away from her. Now they knew what she was up to, so they would avoid her.

"Wonderful," Annalise muttered as she took the chicken, which deserved to be eaten, back to the chicken coop. Whoever was the fool to let them escape deserved to be dragged out here and rolled around in the mess the chickens created.

Annalise wished she had said something to Mavis about this being too much work for one person. Mavis had to be abusing her power to have a maid deal with chickens. This was not what she signed up to work on. "I should toss her in a fire for making me do this," she muttered. "Yes yes. Fight against me. I’ll be seeing you next to potatoes if you keep this up."

Annalise opened the door of the chicken coop and tossed the chicken inside. "That is what you get for not listening. If only you could talk to tell me who let you all get-"

"So, not even the chickens are safe with you around."

Annalise froze when she heard Rafael’s voice. Did she have bad luck, or was he just following her around to see when she would mess up? Why was he here to see her chasing chickens?
