Chapter 44: No more games (2)
"The dress was given to you. There is no reason why Delilah should have it when she is capable of buying her own. I knew her well, so I know how she can be when it comes to me, unfortunately. It doesn’t mean that I agree with you scaring my guests, but she will learn not to desire something that does not belong to her. No more insects or snakes must be picked up to scare my servants or guests," said Rafael.
It was not the way to retaliate when someone troubled you. He had let go of the issue of the snake in the room when he believed it was here, but now that it happened again with beetles, he could not ignore it. There was no telling what she would pick next to scare someone with.
Rafael said that, but Annalise wondered why he was smiling at the dress. He seemed entertained by what had happened to Delilah, but he was trying to seem like he was not.
"Can I speak freely?" Analise requested since she wanted to know the reason for his smile.
"You can," Rafael replied, looking at her.
"You say that, but you are staring at the dress like you are about to laugh," said Annalise.
"I am reminded of a childhood friend who once placed a spider for a teacher he knew was afraid of them to find. It was the perfect distraction for us to run away from school. He might find your games to be funny, but I have to stop them. I cannot have you continue to do this though others are troubling you. Let it end with Delila. I have many guests who pass through here and I agree their personalities are something, but you cannot do this. They would have your head," Rafael warned.
"I would not do this to any other guest. The snake was me," Annalise finally admitted. There was no point denying it now. "Some of the other maids placed worms and insects on my bed because I became your mother’s maid. I hoped the snake would warn them that I am not in for their games. I know not that try that with any of your other guests since we represent the Callahans and my actions affect you."
"And Delilah?" Rafael inquired.
"She tried to take the dress before I entered your study, and then she paid the other maid you saw at the front door to sneak into my room to take it. I was lucky to be there when the maid came and thought of ruining the dress to end others wanting to have it, but I decided to place a few beetles to show why you should never steal. I will go to the butler next time," Annalise promised. She could no longer use this trick anymore or she would be fired.
Annalise found herself lucky that he had not spoken of firing her right now.
"Weren’t you afraid that she would tell her father? Surely you must know he is not a simple man."
"Everyone cares about their reputation. I thought Delilah would not reveal that she went so far as to steal a dress from a mere maid and even if she did, her parents would not react to keep it secret," Annalise replied.
During her time here, Annalise learned how people with status cherished their reputations. Even people with nothing much to their names worried about it. There was a distance between those with money and servants. The wealthy would never want to be known for taking something from those they viewed beneath them. It was a strange world in Annalise’s opinion.
Rafael was impressed by how much she had thought through the outcomes of her actions. He did not think Delilah would tell her father since she was caught with the dress. It would have been a different story if he had not left his study in time to see that Delilah had the dress. Delilah would not have admitted to taking the dress or paying a maid.
Annalise could not do this to any more of his guests or servants, but he did enjoy the fact that Delilah would now think twice about trying to steal something.
Rafael placed the dirty dress on the table he sat on. "As much as you have been causing trouble, I have been causing trouble for you. With Connor and now with Delilah who did this because of her feelings for me."
Annalise would have bet a finger that Rafael wasn’t aware of Delilah’s feelings. She wondered how long he had known and how long Delilah had been acting like this for him to be so lenient with how she had scared Delilah.
’What is it about him that is making these women crazy? He is handsome,’ Annalise had no issue admitting. ’But he is not worth acting crazy because another woman was given a dress.’
"Is there something I said that upsets you?" Rafael asked since she was looking at him like he had spoken another language. She stared at him like he was a piece of art she could not understand why anyone would bother to buy.
"No," Annalise answered.
"I like to forget about the status of those who step on my estate whether they be the king or a noble. When they are wrong, they should be punished accordingly. You did that with Delilah. I will not scold you or punish you as I said. I simply ask that you do not pick up anything to scare anyone else. I will have Mavis speak with all the maids about these games they play," said Rafael.
The maids or knights could have issues with each other, but Rafael wasn’t here for dirt being placed in someone’s bed or snakes placed in a room. It was childish, and sooner or later, he had to deal with it when he was already busy.
"I promise I will stay clear of snakes and bugs. I can even offer my help to get rid of the snakes. I know where a few of them are. Why are you laughing?" Annalise asked, taken aback by his body shaking from his laughter. She was being serious about knowing where there were snakes. The knights had not checked that area.
"You are something," Rafael said, clearing his throat after he was finished laughing. The last thing he expected her to say was that she would help get rid of the snakes. There was no other maid he could think of to offer help in getting rid of the snakes. He had witnessed many of the knights who had no issue taking life, being scared of the snakes.
"Is helping to get rid of the snakes your only way of ensuring you will not take them up in the future?" Rafael mused. He found himself entertained by her. For a moment, he understood why his mother had taken a liking to her so quickly.
"No," Annalise shook her head. "I can control myself."
"I see. There is no need for you to aid in finding them. The knights will do one last look over the estate, but if you come across any, feel free to tell Edwin. He will inform the knights. I am going to keep a close eye on you, Annalise. I still believe that your days here are numbered, but I look forward to being surprised," said Rafael.
