Chapter 378: A change in the manor (3)

"What are you looking at Edwin? Oh, watching them act like children at this age," Mavis said after joining him at a window to look down at the training yard. "They are creating a mess out there."

"They are having fun. When was the last time you saw the manor so lively?" Edwin asked.

The training yard which not long had knights training left and right now had knights running around throwing snow thanks to Annalise who threw a snowball at Rafael and then at knights walking by.

"I had a few doubts initially, but she’s brought a good change to the manor. The young master is more relaxed these days and takes more breaks. I hope the manor gets more lively as the days go on. With the lady having some guests," said Edwin, hoping Annalise would make more friends to invite to the manor for parties.

Mavis thought differently from Edwin. "I still think she will bring trouble when she has to meet with some of his peers. So far it is fine because she hasn’t been introduced to the town as the lady of the manor. How long do you think it will take before a wedding? They are sleeping together."

"That is none of our concern. We only need to do our work and help them with what they need. How long are you going to pretend that you didn’t take a liking to her? I overheard you telling the maids not to speak ill of her or they will have to deal with you," Edwin said, looking away from the window to Mavis. She looked flustered like she didn’t want anyone to know about it.

Mavis avoided Edwin’s gaze and continued to watch Annalise running around in the snow with Rafael not far behind her creating balls for her to throw at knights. "She’s the lady now. It is my job to stop the maids from talking down on her. She has a lot to learn. Have you found out who the men walking around the manor are? They don’t look like they could be her family."

"I’ve heard them be called guards. It could be possible he hired guards for her, but why would he when there are plenty of knights? Their speech reminds me of Annalise’s first days here. When it is time for us to know, we will. Don’t go snooping around to ruin the peace in the manor. It’s so pleasant these days that I worry something is about to go wrong," said Edwin.

Working for the knights for as long as he did, Edwin knew that this peace was bound to be disturbed whether they liked it or not. Especially with Travis coming around now. There was also so much he had to inform Rafael about what happened during his time away. Like Connor returning to the town to see his father and making a fuss.

"If I don’t snoop, I am not prepared to handle future problems we might have. I’m worried but I am giving her a chance. She has asked that we start over. I’m just a little curious about who she is since her story about her family doesn’t match up these days. I’m really curious about the men following her," Mavis said, inspecting the men shielding Annalise from having snow thrown at her.

Edwin was also a little confused because he faintly remembered Thomas as Annalise’s brother when he came to the manor one day asking if she had returned from the trip. Now he wasn’t introduced as her brother but as a guard. There seemed to be a lot Rafael and Annalise had to keep secret.

"As long as Rafael is aware, I won’t be curious to snoop. He’s brought her and her companions here so he must trust them. He would never allow anyone dangerous here. Have your girls cleaned the window?" Edwin asked, wiping the window glass with his finger. "There is dust. You might want to tell them how to clean a window again."

Mavis stepped forward to take a closer look at the window. "There isn’t any dust."

"Must I show you where to find spectacles? You should clean before someone sees it," Edwin said, walking away to leave a fuming Mavis alone.

Rather than watching the others play from the second floor, he wanted to go outside to do it. It looked like Rafael was laughing while he played with Annalise so Edwin wanted to hear it.

As Edwin walked outside, he was stopped by something coming at his face and hitting him right on his mouth.

"Rafael!" Annalise gasped, pointing to Rafael as the culprit.

"I’m only making the balls for you. You threw it," said Rafael.

"You traitor," Annalise muttered. "I’m sorry, Edwin. I was throwing them wherever I spotted someone and didn’t realise that it was you."

Edwin wiped the snow from his face. "It is fine, Lady Annalise. I must say that you have to have a strong arm for it to be thrown so hard."

"Thank you," Annalise said, enjoying the compliment.

"Don’t compliment her, Edwin. She will throw it harder. Is there a problem at the gates?" Rafael asked, using the moment of Annalise staying still to fit her coat. A few buttons had come undone from her running around.

"No," Edwin answered, shaking his head. "I just wanted to see you play up close."

"Good. You can see me taking out all the knights with snow. More balls Rafael," Annalise said, ready to hit more knights. This was making her want to throw rocks at an enemy since she was so good at aiming.

Rafael placed a snowball in her hand for her to throw. He was nothing but a mere tool making weapons for her to throw. He couldn’t properly remember how Annalise had gotten him or the knights to take part in throwing around snow. What he took note of was how his knights and Annalise’s guards had quickly become comfortable around each other.

It took one snowball to hit someone from the other side and at first who was hit was grumpy, but now they were playfully throwing at each other. It was starting to look like a battlefield with how serious they were taking hitting each other and then there was Annalise who didn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

Rafael was getting close to picking her up over his shoulder and carrying her back inside.

"Edwin-" Rafael stopped as he was hit at the back of his head. The cold feeling he got gave away that he was hit by snow.

"Oh," Annalise covered her mouth to hide her laughter. She looked in the direction the snowball came from and found Michael standing next to Christian. She hoped that it was Christian who threw it so Rafael could hit him with snow. "Rafael, you need to play the game and throw one back. I’m sure it was Christian."

"What did I ever do to you?" Christian asked because of her setting him up to be killed by Rafael. It was painful to play with Annalise. If Rafael joined, Christian would give up and go back inside.

"That fact you have forgotten upsets me. Let’s leave it as you are very annoying. I will start making the balls for you Rafael," Annalise said, snooping down to gather snow. "Here!" She exclaimed, standing up with the freshly made snowball in her hand.

’Oh dear,’ Edwin thought, stepping back to get away from what was about to come. Now standing by the window to watch them seemed like a better idea.
