The Knight's Mysterious Maid -
Chapter 375: Offer (3)
Chapter 375: Offer (3)
"When are you going to show Annalise the dungeon? She was asking me about it but since you didn’t tell her, I did not share its location. Is there someone down here she wants to meet?" River asked, walking toward the door to enter the dungeon.
"No. She just wants to look around. She sees it as a room to pass the time in. I’m thinking of putting dresses at all the entrances so she turns back," said Rafael.
The dungeon door opened for Rafael and River to walk in to find Olivia. After sitting around talking they realised they had nothing to do since the women were busy. It was becoming too cold outside for them to spar against each other and if they did it inside, Beatrice would scold them for not relaxing.
Rafael looked in the cells at the people he still had here. One he passed was the man Connor sent to snoop around his study and then he reached Olivia who sat in the corner of her cell.
"If you’re here to finally kill me, just do it over with. I don’t want to talk," said Olivia.
She was tired of the filthy place, listening to other people here being tortured and then killed. No one had tried to torture her to find out more about who hired her and for what. She just sat there, listening to what was going on around her, and eating when they decided to bring food.
"I thought someone with a family to take care of would have tried to save herself. There are some problems you have with your family but you still try to sneak money to them, right?" Rafael asked, repeating what he found out about her.
Normally people like her either had no one in their lives so they were free to do these jobs without anyone getting hurt because of them or they distanced themselves from their families so their steps wouldn’t go back to their loved ones. There were a handful of people who enjoyed doing these kinds of jobs for the fun of it.
Olivia looked up at Rafael and noticed that River Callahan was standing beside him. "What do you want from me? I don’t sell my body," she said. She would rather die than stoop that low.
"I’m happily married," River said, frowning because of what she thought they wanted. What would he do with such a young girl who could be his daughter when he had Beatrice?
Olivia turned to Rafael for him to say that he didn’t want to use her body.
Rafael just stared back at Olivia, having nothing to say since it should be obvious that wasn’t what he wanted from her. This was his manor. If he was such a bastard, it would have happened a long time ago. He made sure that the women here were not troubled by the guards who spent all day down here out of sight from anyone.
Rafael looked away from Olivia to Aria who was lying on the cold floor. She was lying so still that he would think she was dead if he didn’t know all that happened to her was getting her fingers broken. There was more time left for her to think over her actions.
"I need to hear you say it," Olivia said, getting to her feet.
"I have a woman I love in my life," Rafael answered.
"That doesn’t stop rich bastards like you from abusing your power. Just kill me and get it over with. My family has nothing to do with my job. It is only me who will die," Olivia said, ready to accept her fate. What else could Rafael be here for?
Rafael brushed off being grouped with whatever pig of a man she had come across in the past. "I will give you freedom and a bit of money if you work with us. If you don’t, you will die as you want, but it will not be a quick death. You did try to take my woman."
Olivia folded her arms. "You are a bastard. Sleeping with your maid like all the others. I knew the rumours of you being a saint weren’t true. I’ve seen what happens in this dungeon. You aren’t like what this town believes you to be."
"You shouldn’t listen to rumours. They are started by people who don’t know me," Rafael replied.
He rarely talked to the people in the town passing around all kinds of gossip about him. He liked to stay in the manor unless he had to leave for work or just to help someone. Unless you came inside the manor or spent a lot of time with him, you knew nothing of his personality.
"When threats are made to my life or the people I care for, am I to stand around like an idiot and not punish you? I should have been killed for trying to take her. For sneaking into my manor with such intentions. I get angry just like everyone else in this world. I never asked any of you to call me a saint," Rafael said, tired of hearing he wasn’t the man other people created in their heads.
Since he was a quiet person, no one thought the worst so when they poked at him and were faced with his anger, they were in for a shock.
"Will you help us?" River asked.
"No. I don’t want to get involved in whatever you are planning to do. I’ve already failed one job and ended up like this. Besides, if you need my help, that means Travis must be winning this battle. Just kill me," Olivia said, tired of this job. She was going to die anyway if she got involved with these two men any further.
"Open the gates," Rafael said.
River stepped back to allow the guard to pass. If he were in the young woman’s position, he would be asking more questions about what the job entailed before turning down a chance at freedom. They would have made sure she got out of town if she helped them.
A guard came toward the cell with keys, looking for the right one to open the door. He found it in less than a minute and unlocked the door for Rafael to enter.
"What are you doing?" Olivia asked, backing away to the other side of the cell to get away from Rafael who came right to her.
"You picked your option. I am killing you," Rafael said, grabbing her neck and pushing her back to the cell before she could run away. The sound of the cell bars shaking woke up those who weren’t aware he was there. "You’re taking up space in my dungeon."
Olivia grimaced from the pain of his hold. It wasn’t like all the cells in the dungeon were full for him to need this one right now. She knew she said to just kill her, but now that he was doing just that, she had a different thought. She didn’t want to die just yet.
Rafael ignored her trying to fight him. Trying her best to claw at his face and chest. He lacked patience these days because he found happiness and wanted to enjoy it in peace. Since Olivia was not going to help him, he had no reason to keep her alive.
"I-I’ll help," Olivia said, changing her mind before he could snap her neck.
"Good," Rafael said, releasing her. "You chose wisely."
Olivia dropped to the floor, trying to catch her breath. She couldn’t believe how easy it would have been for him to kill her. He didn’t give her time to put up a fight and make an escape. "What do you need?" She asked.
