Chapter 195: Knowing when to quit (3)

"Annalise, you seem to be popular today. I should leave so I do not be a bother to your conversation. I will find River and have him keep me company. It is time he remembers that he is here as a guest and not one of the men competing. Excuse me," Beatrice said as she stood up. She kept the red charm in her hand to offer it to Annalise.

"You do not need to leave, Lady Beatrice. I will take my conversation with Logan outside and get back to you. It won’t be long," Annalise said since she had nothing to talk about with Logan for a long time.

"I suppose that would be better than me looking for River all alone. Then, you should take my gift before you go outside. Give it to whomever you think needs it," said Beatrice, handing over the charm to Annalise.

Annalise looked at the charm placed in her hand. From Beatrice, it might cost a bit of money. She had a sword so she was the person who needed one. Or, she could give it to Thomas. He wasn’t a lover of the traditions here, but a gift like this would make him happy.

"Excuse us," Annalise replied, walking toward the entrance where Logan stood. She took him by his arm and dragged him outside.

Upon exiting the tent, Annalise noted how the sky had changed and it gave her a good idea of how long she had been inside. Most of the day had gone by and she missed the opportunity to see who the palace had sent. She wouldn’t be able to meet with Thomas again since he needed to follow the carriage from the palace.

Frustrated because she had missed the fights and the chance to meet with Thomas again, Annalise was not in the mood to deal with Logan.

"When are you going to leave me alone? I’ve heard enough from everyone that you are only like this because you like to engage in a relationship when you return and then when the woman falls for you, you move on. I don’t want you to be stuck on me simply because you like the challenge of me not liking you right away like everyone else. Stop it," Annalise said, folding her arms to stop her fists from going to his face.

"Don’t listen to what the others are saying about me. I do not like you because it is a challenge. I like you because you are unlike any woman I have been around. I have been intrigued by you from the moment I saw you in the bushes. Trust me when I say that I want to be with you," Logan replied.

He sought her out so he could get a charm from her. He received many as he walked around, but getting one from Annalise was on his mind. Logan wanted to get one before Rafael might receive one from her.

Logan saw one on Rafael’s sword after a match and thinking it came from Annalise, he came here to confirm and also get one.

"I have rejected your feelings from the very beginning. I don’t expect you to get over the fact I don’t want to be with you so easily, but to seek me out all of the time and to speak on my behalf, is frustrating. What I think about you will never change," Annalise said, certain of this fact.

There was a higher chance of her liking Rafael than her ever liking Logan. She didn’t know how long Rafael liked her, but he hid it better than Logan, and now that his feelings were revealed, she wasn’t as bothered as when it came to Logan. She had long gotten over the shock from Rafael’s confession.

"I was told that sometimes men think if they continue to pester the woman they care for, feelings might change. That is not the case for me. The way you bother me makes me consider leaving the manor. Or worse," Annalise added, keeping her thoughts about killing him a secret.

She was disregarding Jonah’s advice to let him down hard since she didn’t want to flip Logan in front of all the people around them. His peers, women eyeing him, and the border guards would laugh.

"Please, for the last time, stop trying to court me. It is fun for you, but it is frustrating for me. You are not a terrible person, but my partner is not something you will ever be. Please," Annalise pleaded with him.

Logan reached behind his head to run his fingers through his hair. He knew that she was greatly annoyed by him trying to court her, but as she said, he was hoping that she would slowly start to feel something for him if he continued to court her.

"I should have thought more about how uncomfortable you would be. To hear that you would leave the manor because of me isn’t good to hear. I didn’t notice that I was bothering you that much. I can’t stop liking you, but I won’t bother you anymore. I’m hoping that doesn’t mean I have to avoid you when I see you in the manor. The knights and maids spend a lot of time together," Logan said.

If he couldn’t be her partner, while he got over his feelings, he would like to be her friend.

"It depends on what you say or do when you see me. The moment you try to flirt with me or do something I do not like, I will walk to Mavis and complain about it. I am willing to be your friend, but give me a few days so I can get over how annoying I think you are and a few other thoughts I need to get rid of," Annalise muttered, referring to her thoughts of killing him.

She already had a spot at the back of the manor picked out to bury him. Now that spot would have to be saved for Christian.

"I know that I have to work on getting over my feelings for you, but who is the charm for?" Logan asked, unable to take his eyes off it. He had seen Beatrice give it to Annalise and most likely it was for Rafael, but with him having to stop courting her, the charm would be a nice gift. "It will be a good parting gift for my feelings."

Annalise squeezed the charm in her right hand. She wanted it for herself, but if it would be something Logan could keep to be reminded of this moment and her being done with him courting her, she could give it away. "You won’t take this from me and think that it means I have feelings for you, right? You are not that delusional, right?"

"I promise to stop trying to court you, Annalise. I have been looking forward to getting one from you and I want to treasure this as the end of what might be my first love. You don’t need to-"

"Here," Annalise said, handing him the charm.

Beatrice most likely wanted it to be given to Rafael and Annalise was not going to do that after all that she spoke about with Rafael today. Before the kiss she shared with him and his confession, she would have given it to him since he didn’t walk around with any charms. Now, her giving Rafael a charm would mean so much more.

"Where is Rafael? It is about time I serve him something to eat unless he already had food," Annalise said, looking around for the giant.

Most of the people she saw earlier had left and those that remained were packing up their things to go home. The competition seemed to be over, but Rafael was nowhere in sight.

"He’s speaking to the town guards. It seems two guards have gone missing and Rafael is placed as a suspect," Logan answered.

’Oh no,’ Annalise panicked.
