Chapter 188: Hot and bothered (1)
Rafael wasn’t the slightest bit thrilled to see the young woman standing before him once again. She was somehow picked to honour him with her charm since he had won his match. There had to be someone behind her who was pulling the strings to get her close to him.
Rafael had not seen her before and he did not want to see much more of her. He didn’t have to guess why she was approaching him. Another young lady looking to marry him.
Not wanting to ruin the contest with his sour mood when it had become a bit of a tradition for a lady to be picked and bring the winner a gift, he allowed her to tie her charm to his sword, right under where Annalise’s ribbon was tied.
He was a bit impatient to see what had caused Annalise to yell and then storm off. From little glances, he could see that she was standing with Giselle. The last he saw the two of them together, he did not like the way Giselle had grabbed Annalise.
"You seem to have somewhere to go. Forgive me for my trembling fingers. I can’t seem to tie it right," Siena apologised.
She was normally more composed by this, but standing before him made her nervous. She was close to him in order to tie the charm on his sword.
"Let me do it," Rafael said, touching her hand to make her stop.
"It is the lady who needs to tie it on. I am almost finished. You were as good as I had heard. I told you that I am not from this town. I enjoy seeing games like this and I have been waiting so long to see your knights. I was hoping to see your father since I have heard so many stories about him. Will he be here today? I have brought a gift for him," Siena said, letting go of the charm now that it was tied.
"Getting close to my father won’t make me court you. Excuse me," Rafael said, stepping to the side to be out of her way. He had to get to Annalise to find out what trouble she found herself in.
"Your father is a great knight. You are also well-known around the kingdom. I did not approach you and spoke of your father to make you court me. I am already engaged. See," Siena showed her hand where there was a ring present.
It was the ring she prepared as an emergency in case Rafael pushed her away for trying to court him. The Normans had already prepared the ring for her engagement and she had seen it, but Siena did not want it.
With the feud between Rafael and his uncle, she knew not to accept that ring. She would allow Rafael to pick one out to give to her. For now, she wore a ring that she brought.
"I apologise if I made you uncomfortable and gave you the idea that I wanted to court you. I really have heard the stories about you and your father and with my short time in town, I wanted to meet the men from those stories. Excuse me," Siena said, curtsying and then she took her leave.
Kayla followed Siena and like her lady thought, she looked forward to Rafael coming to Siena to apologise. However, when she looked over her shoulder, Rafael was not around. "My lady, he is not coming after you," she said in a panic.
Siena smiled as she knew he wouldn’t come to her just yet. She liked how he did what he wanted. If only she could trade places with him even if it was just a single day. "Do not worry about it. At least he will think that I am engaged so I am not looking to court him."
"He is going toward a lady and that rude maid. I’m afraid he might have a lover," Kayla said.
"His uncle is placing him in a marriage he has no idea about so it wouldn’t be surprising he already has a lover. If that is the case, I must change my plans. Get him to help me break off this marriage. I cannot do it on my own so we must work together without letting my father know. It will be fine. I can feel you worrying behind there," Siena said to cheer up Kayla.
Even though she said this, Siena was worried. She was in Travis’s care while she was here so she feared what the twisted man would do if he learned that she had ruined his plans. He already thought low of his sister. What would he do to her who did not share blood with him?
Siena briefly glanced at where Rafael walked to the maid and woman. If he did have a lover, Siena hoped Rafael would keep her out of sight from Travis. Travis wasn’t going to let anyone ruin this marriage.
Meanwhile, Giselle repeatedly tapped Annalise’s hand as they looked on at Rafael approaching them. For a second, Giselle thought he was coming to her, but then her memory of him turning her down shattered that thought. He had to be coming to Annalise.
Annalise straightened herself like she would when her father was coming to her and she thought he would scold her. Rafael took off his helmet now that he was far off the field and did not need it.
"Why did you scream?" Rafael asked, ignoring Giselle who stepped to him and went straight to Annalise.
Annalise didn’t want to answer his question since it was because of him that she screamed. She had thoughts about his body and now he stood before her slightly covered in sweat. She got a small whiff of his scent thanks to the wind blowing from the direction he stood.
Annalise turned to the side to look away from him. She needed a tree to bang her head against to solve this problem. ’One, two, three,’ she counted as she imagined hitting her head against a tree.
Rafael didn’t know what to make of Annalise nodding her head while not looking at him or Giselle. He learned not to try to make too much sense of the things she did. "Annalise," he said and saw her flinch at her name. "Giselle, give us a moment alone."
"Okay."
"Did something happen? Why aren’t you looking my way when you were the one to speak of me avoiding you? Is this revenge? Annalise," he called once more, but this time, he tried to touch her only to have her flinch and step away from him. "Are we back to not touching you? Did I scare you because of what happened during my match? I didn’t think you could see from wherever you went."
"I did not get to see your match and I am not scared of you so please do not think that. I just think it is better that I look over here than at you. There is a beautiful tree over there with some kind of fruit. It is red-"
"Those are apples. Look at me, Annalise. Before I think you found yourself in trouble and you are hiding it from me," Rafael said.
"I didn’t find myself in trouble and I would rather not look at you right now. I want to paint a portrait of that tree in my mind," Annalise replied, taking a step back from him.
"Do you find it hard to look at me because there is no denying that I am a man who suits your taste? It is alright if my appearance right now makes you feel bothered-"
Annalise silenced his words by covering his mouth with her right hand. "Don’t joke around right now."
Rafael removed her hand so she could hear him clearly. "I am quite serious with what I am telling you," he replied.
