Chapter 179: If I wanted you (1)
"Stay? Is that proper?" Annalise asked, looking at the door that wasn’t locked.
At this time of the day, she wasn’t certain if it was better locked or unlocked. Both would have anyone suspecting something.
"If you are afraid someone might walk in, the door can be locked. If being seen is what scares you, I am the only one who stays on this floor. Edwin will give it one last inspection before he goes to bed, but he does not enter my bedroom. You are free to go if you are uncomfortable," Rafael said, taking the cup from her hands.
He didn’t expect her to stay alone with him in his bedroom. He now regretted saying that single word as Annalise quietly left his side. He sighed and brought the cup to his lips to taste the tea, but before he could get a good sip of it, he heard the door lock.
"That should help calm my nerves about Mavis walking in," Annalise said as she walked back to be by Rafael’s side. "Did you taste the tea?"
"You are not afraid to be here with me?" Rafael asked.
"No, but when you ask that I do get a little bit concerned. Should I be?" Annalise questioned, taking a seat to his right so she could look out the window.
"No," Rafael replied.
"Then it is fine. If you try something to make me uncomfortable, you will find yourself experiencing a kick that might rid you of any chance to have children. A kick that will have you tingling in that area for a week. Be mindful," Annalise warned him.
Rafael smiled and then sipped on the tea to stop himself from laughing. He had a good memory of her beating on Connor to know her words had no lie in them. "I have no intention of making you feel uncomfortable. Ever," he promised.
"I know. I wouldn’t have stayed if I didn’t know that. You are nothing like Connor and those men who spoke nasty things when they were here. You are kind. So kind that it bothers me sometimes," Annalise said, looking out at the view from his bedroom. She would rather go on the balcony to look out at the town. "You have a beautiful view."
"I do," Rafael replied, staring at the young woman he could not understand. His father was right that he was screwed with his feelings. He thought they would have gone away by now but they were still here and growing every day.
Annalise felt Rafael’s gaze on her and asked, "Why are you watching me so intently? Is it because I am beautiful?"
"Yes, you are," Rafael replied, stirring the tea that was surprisingly good.
Annalise turned to face Rafael who might not have heard what she asked because of his response. "W-What?" Annalise stuttered. She tapped her mouth with her right hand to make it act right after stuttering.
"You asked if you are beautiful and I said yes. Was there something wrong with my answer? Did you want me to say no?"
"No, I just..." Annalise trailed off, thrown off by his answer. "I was just joking."
"And I answered honestly. What was so wrong with my answer? Do you not think you are beautiful?" Rafael asked, hoping that was not the case. Not when she affected him this much.
"I know that I am beautiful, I just did not expect you to say it," Annalise mumbled, subconciously touching her hair she had pinned up.
Rafael noticed the small action and with this, he confirmed that she was worried about her hair. It wasn’t the first time he noticed her picking at her hair like she didn’t like it. "Your hair is also beautiful," he added.
He turned his attention out the window to avoid seeing her expression now. Rafael tapped his finger on the table to calm his thoughts. Perhaps it wasn’t a good idea to invite her to his bedroom so late. Recently, one of his dreams was different and it involved Annalise. He had to get out of bed and soak himself in water.
It wasn’t decent of him to have such dreams about the woman who worked as his maid. Not when he didn’t want his feelings to get out of hand and make her uncomfortable.
He then had the thought of firing her so he could pursue her, but then the thought of her rejecting him and not wanting to return to a good job because his feelings worried her.
After a long moment of silence fell on them, Rafael turned to Annalise and found her still staring at him as if in shock.
"What?" He asked.
"You are... strange," Annalise concluded, resting back in her chair. She found it hard to breathe at the moment so she pressed her right hand to her chest to help.
"Because I said you are beautiful? Should I have lied to you? You are ugly. There," he said, smiling along with Annalise.
Annalise shook her head at his way of fixing her being stunned by his compliment. She didn’t think he would say she was beautiful because the people on this side went straight to describing her as wild. She guessed he only saw her beauty now because he had no idea who she was.
It would change if he knew so she shouldn’t be fooled by his words.
"Do you doubt my words?" Rafael inquired as he placed the cup on the table. "I suppose you wouldn’t know good beauty because your taste in men is horrible."
"It is not! You only say that because I said I am not interested in any of your knights. I have good taste in men. Your knights are just good for looking at-"
"And what about me?" Rafael interjected. He was curious about what she thought of him. "You are blushing."
"No, I am not," Annalise replied, shaking her head. She was not the type to blush over a simple question.
Rafael inspected her cheeks which did look flushed even in the dark room. "You are. Are you embarrassed to answer my question? I will not judge or tease you if I am a man you see as someone you would court."
"But I can’t court you so I don’t think about it. Once again, please do not be offended by the words of a maid," Annalise said.
Before his ego might be wounded she said, "You are a handsome man. Annoying at times, but you are pleasant to be around. You are kind and you have the same interests in swords as I do. If I could, I might have courted you and have you."
"Have me?" Rafael replied, intrigued by this. She spoke so confidently that he wanted to see how exactly she could have him if she wanted him. "You are aware that I do not let just anyone into my life."
Annalise smiled. When will everyone realise she was not just anyone? "You’ve let women casually walk into your home. All I would have needed to do was get close to you. It might look like I do not have much experience with men, but that is not the case. I understand how to make you forget to think with your head."
She used it to her advantage to kill the two border guards. If there was no war and she wanted Rafael, she just might have had him. She was confident in her ways to know he would be under her control.
"I’m intrigued," Rafael said, wanting to see more of this side of her. "How exactly would you have been able to have me?"
