Chapter 177: The woman in the manor (2)

"I still cannot believe I have gotten a job working in the manor of Rafael Callahan. My mother did not believe me when I told her the head maid told me to come today," said Olivia.

"It is not hard to find work here if you approach Rafael. Tell him you are in desperate need of work and he would tell you to come to his manor. That is how a few of the servants found work here. There was once a time he had more servants than he needed, but since they were in need of money and had nowhere else to work, he kept them," Heidi said, falling in love with him all over again.

"It must be his humble beginnings that make him so kind. No one would want to lose so much money to keep servants they do not need. I am yet to see him up close. I wish I could have served him dinner," Olivia said, touching her heated cheeks.

Annalise felt bad for Olivia who had no idea what Rafael was really like. Being close to him wasn’t as good as she thought. Who wanted to be around someone who liked to bring up someone being a pervert so many times?

Then Rafael’s kindness made her sick. She was supposed to hate everything about him, but how was she supposed to hate a man who was kind to everyone around him? Kind to her to be offering his food and buying her treats. She wanted it to stop and for him to start being cruel. Then she could have something to hate.

Annalise turned to face the wall, wanting to hit her head against it to fix her thoughts. She was still haunted by Rafael appearing in her mind when she had been underwater. If he started to appear in her dreams, she was going to take a knife and march right up to his room.

"Has there been any talk about him getting married? Everyone is looking forward to his wedding since the king and nobles might come to the manor. I hope I am lucky to be here to serve the king. I hear he might marry Delilah-"

A loud snort coming from Annalise interrupted Olivia. Annalise waved her hand to apologise since her mouth did not want to work. If she opened it, she would end up laughing. Hearing that Rafael might marry Delilah was hilarious.

"Don’t mind her. She’s not the right person to talk to about relationships and getting married. Also, when it comes to dresses, she is boring," Heidi said, stepping in front of Annalise to hide her laughter from Olivia so she wouldn’t feel bad. "I doubt Rafael will be getting married soon, but if he does, it might not be Delilah. They always seemed like siblings."

"Then, does he have another woman here in the manor?" Olivia asked, wanting more information so she could do her job and get out of there quickly. Travis was a good customer and she did not want to disappoint him.

Heidi could only smile as Annalise’s laughter became louder. "There isn’t a woman here. He is too busy with the knights to spend time with a woman. And the only times he leaves the manor are to visit his parents or do work. That is why Annalise is laughing," she explained, reaching behind her back to pull on Annalise’s dress to make her stop.

"But, I saw him in the market for the small festival. He was walking with a woman. Everyone is talking about it."

Annalise’s eyes widened and she nearly choked on her saliva. She patted her chest and coughed to make herself better.

"Rafael at the festival," Heidi muttered, trying to think back to him leaving. "Annalise, you went with him to the festival, right? Did he spend time with a woman? I didn’t get to see you that night and in the morning, he was served breakfast in bed."

’I am that woman!’ Annalise screamed in her mind. The only other woman he spoke to was a young woman named Grace.

"He did stop to speak to a woman, but I don’t know much about her," Annalise answered. She pushed herself off the wall and walked up to the kitchen since the line was moving faster.

"People say he was with a lady they had not seen before and then the two of them disappeared-"

"It is not good to gossip about his relationships. He had given us a warning to stop gossiping about him and women. Maybe the head maid forgot to tell me about it. Mavis has a lot of the maids keeping watch for her so you should be careful about what you say in front of others," Annalise advised Olivia.

Annalise wanted this conversation to go away so it wouldn’t be brought up how she fell into a hole on top of Rafael because he wanted to protect her from the fall. She would also like to hide the fact that it was her who Rafael spent money on to buy candy. Why couldn’t other people see something happening and not speak about it?

"The line is moving," Annalise said, walking ahead to leave the two behind.

"Since when is she the responsible one? Did becoming his maid change her? I’m proud."

Olivia watched the two women go on without her. Just as she suspected, Rafael’s maid had the answer she was looking for. Since Annalise was there that night, she must have seen Rafael meeting with a woman. While the servants were away enjoying themselves, Rafael must have brought the woman here.

The maid taking care of Rafael had to know what he did that night. Olivia rolled her eyes, annoyed by how long this would take to get out the information from Annalise. Of all the times for maids to stop gossiping, why was it at such an important time for her?

Olivia followed the two of them so they could continue their conversation about Rafael. If she couldn’t get what she wanted out of Annalise, the other maid seemed like the type to gossip.

Annalise entered the kitchen, ready to just eat and not think about Rafael. It was hard to do considering she was in his manor, but just for one second, she would like to go without hearing Rafael’s name.

Annalise took her plate from one of the maids helping out in the kitchen and went to cups filled with water or juice for them to take one from. Beside that table was one full of rum and alcohol brought up from storage for the knights to use out since Rafael had no other use for it.

"Did you take my advice to get rid of that man?"

"No Jonah," Annalise sighed. She was in luck to not see Logan for the rest of the day, but it meant she could not do as she planned to get rid of his feelings forever. "I will do it tomorrow if I see him. Thank you for the food."

"Annalise, I need to make sure we both understand what I meant-"

"Can I come to use the kitchen later to boil tea?" Annalise asked and then bit her lip, wanting to take back asking this. "For Rafael not for me. I wasn’t asked to, but I think he needs it. I only need a pot and the leaves for tea," she softly spoke.

Each word leaving her mouth made her scream why in her head. Why was she doing this when she could just go to bed? Why? Why? Why?

"Since it is for him, you can. I will put on a pot of water to start warming up before you come back. Go on and eat," Jonah shooed her away.
