Chapter 166: Love (4)

Travis watched the little smile that formed on Siena’s lips after hearing there was hope for her and Rafael to fall in love. As long as she was happy and ready to do her part in all of this, he didn’t care. He needed her to stay oblivious about the woman staying with Rafael so he wouldn’t have to hear about Rafael not loving her.

Men had other women all the time. She needed to get used to it and continue to court Rafael, but since she was one to be hooked up on love, he had to keep her in the dark for now. Travis wasn’t in the mood for any more conversations about love.

"I will go into the market after breakfast to get a good look around at the town. It will one day be my home so I wish to see more of it. I might even hear more stories about Rafael. It would be lovely if I could run into him and he doesn’t know that we are to wed. Do you mind if I keep it a secret that I am staying with his uncle?" Siena asked, hoping he would allow it.

She didn’t know much about the Normans’ history with Rafael, but since she had never seen Rafael visit her home town to see his relatives, she could only assume they were not on good terms. If that was true, Rafael might not be happy to see her if he knew right away that she was staying with his uncle.

It was better for the two of them to meet on their own and talk. Siena hoped that there would be some miracle to have her meeting with Rafael today when she was going to the market. It was about time she got to see him face-to-face instead of looking at portraits.

"I can do that," Travis replied. It fell right into the plans for her and Rafael to meet without their future wedding being known.

Travis looked forward to seeing the shock on Rafael’s face when he showed up next to Siena. It would be even more entertaining to see the look on Beatrice’s face with her realising she had fallen right into his trap.

Siena smiled and took the napkin from the table to fold over her dress to get breakfast started. She wanted to leave as soon as possible so she could travel near Rafael’s manor first before going to the market.

"Oh, did you hear that noise in the middle of the night? I came out for a walk and heard someone screaming. I-"

"Some of the men were having a bit of fun amongst themselves last night. You shouldn’t walk around by yourself at night. Get a servant to do what you need. That is what I am paying them for," said Travis.

He picked up his cup of tea to sip on as he thought about the noise she had heard. With nothing better to do, he enjoyed firing arrows at Mack who had long become annoying. The pleas and cries to be taken down for the wall only made him want to kill the man more.

Siena’s room was on the other side of the mansion so he had not thought of being careful to not wake her. It would have been a pain in the ass to deal with her being terrified by what he was doing.

"I see. I will be more mindful from now on. Please enjoy your breakfast," Siena said.

Travis eyed the young woman who was far more obedient than Beatrice. She paid attention to the things he instructed her to do and did not go against what he expected of her. There were a few moments when she opened her mouth and he wanted to tell her to shut up, but he could tolerate her.

Siena silently ate her breakfast, not saying another word to Travis unless he asked her something. It was still weird to be around him and for him to be her guardian while she was away from her family. She was sometimes walking on eggshells around him, but since they were bound to be family, she was doing her best to get used to him.

Once breakfast was over, Siena immediately requested a carriage and guard for her to venture into the market with. She would have preferred if the guard was someone she knew so she wouldn’t fear them going back to tell Travis what she did today, but she was talented at losing the guards her father placed around her so this one would be no different.

The guard wouldn’t want to tell Travis that he lost her so it would be their little secret. If she could, she would like to run into Beatrice.

"Remember, you are not to place yourself in danger. I’d hate to have to send word to your father that something happened to his beloved daughter. Do not put me in the position to have to come looking for you or get you out of trouble. I have better things to do," Travis said, looking out at the carriage coming in front of the steps where they stood.

"And stay away from the lowly men in this town. Ignore whatever sweet words they try to fill your head with. I do not need history to start repeating itself. Anyone who gets in the way of what I want will find themselves buried alive beneath this mansion when I find them. Understood?"

Siena nodded her head. She was an esteemed guest in Travis’s home because this marriage ensured he had her father’s support for whatever he might need in the future. She knew how important she was to Travis which was why it terrified her how easily he could sometimes threaten her when she came from a family with wealth too.

She did not need to fear Travis since he was neck and neck with her father, but his boldness to say these things to her scared her. Siena would never say it out loud, but she understood why Beatrice ran away from home.

Siena would do it too if she had a brother like Travis who was using her marriage to get what he wanted and she needed to listen to his every word. As someone who believed in love and wanted to experience it, if there was a man willing to truly love her, she would leave with him too. Just look at the life Beatrice lived now despite what everyone said about her falling high from grace.

"I will see you later," Siena said, excusing herself and then walked down the steps. Her maid was quick on her heels.

The carriage door was opened by Solomon for Siena to enter with her maid. He closed it once they were safely inside and gave Travis a look before going out front to ride with the coachman

"My lady-"

"I know," Siena replied, looking out the carriage window at Travis. "Be careful with your words around the guard. He will be reporting everything he sees to Travis. I don’t like the coldness in the air when I am around that man. I was always told to be on my husband’s side and that is what I plan to do. I will let him get me close to Rafael and then cut loose this hold he has on me afterwards."

"I am not his sister nor daughter to be forever a puppet for him," Siena said, smiling at Travis as she waved him goodbye.
