The Knight's Mysterious Maid -
Chapter 155: New side (1)
Chapter 155: New side (1)
Tanya was hoping Rafael would keep her around so she would not have to return to doing her normal duties so soon. She looked at Annalise who had the easiest job in the manor aside from the head maid and butler.
She was yet to understand how Annalise got this job and why Mavis was suddenly helping Annalise to be better.
"I have to take back the drinks and glasses your guests used," Tanya said, pointing at the empty glasses on the small table. She would love to stay behind to tidy up the study and show him just how much better it would be to have her as his maid.
Tanya had years’ worth of experience as a maid compared to Annalise. It only made sense that Annalise would be replaced with her or she would join Annalise to take care of Rafael. It wasn’t uncommon to have more than one personal maid.
"Remove them quickly. I will be back shortly," Rafael said, leaving the two alone so he could check the three men had left his home without causing trouble.
Tanya kept her head down until Rafael left his study. "That was unnecessarily short," she sighed, throwing the cloth she carried around onto the table. "Why did they have to talk about the border?"
"They are border guards. You should expect to hear about the border at some point with them around. We should clear this table and put it away-"
"You want me to help you put away this big table?" Tanya questioned, thinking Annalise had lost her mind. "That is too heavy."
Annalise thought the table looked like it would be light. It was a simple small table Edwin brought into the room himself so the drinks they were bringing could be placed on.
The only other table in the room was Rafael’s desk. She didn’t see why he did not have another room to entertain guests instead of bringing them somewhere he liked to be alone.
"You have not tried lifting it to see if it is heavy. I will lift on my own when we are finished," Annalise decided.
"You can stop now," Tanya said, folding her arms as she watched Annalise pick up the glass of juice she poured for Rafael. "You are already his maid so you don’t have to try too hard now."
"That’s odd. I thought I was doing my job as a maid. Silly me forgot I was to act like the lady of the house and not lift a finger. Tomorrow I will start to act that way," Annalise replied.
"I don’t like you," Tanya muttered.
"Believe me, the feeling is mutual, and you didn’t make it hard for me to guess that you don’t like me. After the last time we spoke, I thought you would have been smart to be silent now. You know, with your involvement in stealing my dress-"
"You are not to bring that up!" Tanya exclaimed, looking at the door to make sure Rafael was not there to hear them.
"I don’t know when Mavis died and made you the head maid for you to think I have to do as you say. I don’t see why you keep looking at the door when he already knows what Delilah paid you to do. That’s why you should think before accepting a job from a silly girl. Still, I would have stolen that dress perfectly," Annalise said, nodding her head as she pictured her plan.
"But I am not really one to steal a dress. It is boring."
"You are so strange. As strange as Rafael getting upset that the border guards were speaking about those barbarians. We should call them what they are. Hey! Have you heard-"
"We aren’t friends for the two of us to be gossiping together and we’re working right now. Also, you shouldn’t call the people from the border barbarians. I hear they don’t like that and might haunt those who say that word. I’d hate to see you haunted. Now if you don’t mind, let’s work in silence," Annalise finished with a smile.
"If that were true, everyone in town would be haunted. Rafael stopped the guards from speaking about barbarians and now you want to act like you care about those people. Why should we care for people who will treat us badly if they were to win the war?"
"I’m tired of seeing people I care for leave to fight this war. Just kill them already. If Rafael were to join the men at the border, this war would be over. I’m sure of it," Tanya said.
Annalise ignored Tanya and picked up her tray. What Tanya said confirmed her thoughts that she should kill Rafael if he thought of offering help to the border guards. At the moment, it didn’t seem like it would come to that since Rafael appeared adamant about not having his knights leave to be at the border.
Now Annalise could not help but be curious about why Rafael’s knights had never come to the border since his father was the last commander. From what her father told her, he had only fought the Callahan knights once. River put down his sword as commander years later and Rafael took his place.
Annalise looked at the door, knowing Rafael was returning to the study so she stood back with her tray in her hands while Tanya was yet to clean up her side.
Rafael returned to the study and looked at Tanya who moved quickly to pick up the glasses and bottles. He waited for her to finish and then passed him before closing the door so he would have a moment alone with Annalise.
"You seem to have had a lot on your mind a moment ago," Rafael said.
"Being a woman, that was a difficult conversation to listen to, but I am fine," Annalise replied. If she shared what was really on her mind, he might have her thrown into a cell and locked away forever because murder was the only thing on her mind right now.
"The border guards are not all that bad, but most can be a pain in the ass. My knights and the border guards don’t get along. I have a bad history with the man in charge of the border guards. There will be more border guards showing up so try to bear with them. You are bound to run into them in town," Rafael explained.
"Can I ask you a question? Well two questions," Annalise added because she already asked him one question.
"Go ahead. It is only the two of us here," Rafael replied, curious about what was really on her mind.
"Why did you stop them from speaking about the people at the border? It isn’t much different from all the bad things everyone in town says. They are people you might one day have to kill to protect this kingdom, so why?" Annalise asked. It bothered her that she could not understand his motive for stopping the disgusting things that were said.
"My father raised me to not think of them as barbarians or savages and the king did not order the men at the border to take advantage of women. They are to get the leader to agree to follow the crown. I’d prefer to avoid harming women and children. I am already haunted enough by the men I have killed," Rafael replied.
