Chapter 102: Wild (4)
"It does not matter. As long as you know to ignore Nigel’s words. Any time you come across him, avoid him right away. He will try talking to you about working here."
"He could never convince me to work for him. Not when I dislike him and this is the first time I have ever met him. That type of work is not for me. I am not good at pretending to smile, and I do not enjoy being touched freely in the places I have seen couples in there touch each other," Annalise answered.
She wanted to avoid a situation where she ended up with a lack of clothing with anyone from this side. Thomas’s heart would hurt if he were to see her inside this place. He was the annoying older brother that she did not need. His dramatic ways would have him covering her eyes and mouth as he dragged her out.
"And it is not a place you can find something to scare off the customers with other than yourself," Rafael said, starting to walk in the direction they came from in the carriage. He had enough of the town and was ready to go back to his safe space, which was home.
"I am not a scary-looking person," Annalise argued. She had the appearance of a gentle, loving woman and only when you upset her did she turn scary. ’Like a spider,’ Annalise thought
"I didn’t say that you were a scary-looking person. You are a beautiful woman, but as I said, you are different. Your inability to be walked over would scare the men in Nigel’s business. They like women who listen to their words and do as they say without any complaints," said Rafael.
"Funny. The way everyone describes marriage, it is not only Nigel’s business that wants women to be that way. I do not understand why young women are so eager to marry when they will just be doing as their husband says. It is better to explore the kingdom than be stuck in one town, trying your hardest not to be judged by people who have their own secrets they wish not to be judged by," Annalise said, watching the women walk around, chatting with each other.
"I take it that you have no intention of getting married," Rafael said, looking to his left at Annalise. She would be the first woman to share his sentiments about not being eager to marry.
"One day I have to. It is out of the question that I cannot get married, but there is a lot that I want to do before I settle down with someone. I have questions about the world and do things that others will find me crazy for doing. Once I have satisfied my curiosity, I will think about marriage. It would be good if my husband were to be like me. Preferring to move around than be at home," she added.
"That is why you came to another town to find work? To see how different the town is?" Rafael questioned. If not for his parents being here, he would not be in this town. He would move the knights to someplace quiet where there was more space to shelter more of them.
Rafael would switch places with her and move to the small town where her family owned the farm. This life of being grouped with socialites did not suit him. When he accepted the title of a knight from the king, he did not think anyone would be bothered to keep up with his life.
The times had changed from when people paid hardly any attention to the knights, but now they spent many hours talking about them. The title of knight became more valuable because of how much time was spent near the king and the wealth that was divided amongst the knights after they took over lands.
Most of the findings went to the palace to celebrate the victory, and Rafael would keep enough behind to pay the knights for their work defending the kingdom. There were men in the palace who argued against Rafael sharing out whatever valuables he found. They wanted it sent to the palace so they could take what they wanted and leave a little for the knights.
Rafael’s simple solution to their complaints, as he sat at a table in the palace with them, was to kill him. He placed his sword on the table to give them a chance to attack, but none of the old bastards stood up. Laughter filled the room, coming from Edgar’s direction, while Tobias sighed. Since then, Rafael has earned himself a few enemies.
Those men criticised each decision he made, but none of them wanted to leave the safety of the palace and join him when the time came to fight.
"Yes. I have always been curious about this town and Lockwood. If I have time, I would like to travel there to see what it is like. See the palace and see the king for once. I hope to see him in person one day," Annalise said, hoping this would have him answer when the king was coming to this town.
Rafael didn’t understand why anyone would be eager to see Tobias. He had known the king for years and didn’t want to see him so soon. Tobias looked like a good king from afar, but when he was in front of you, he was a pain in the ass.
"Do not get your hopes up about the king. He is not how he looks," said Rafael.
"You can say that because you have seen him many times, but I have not seen him once. My curiosity will not go away until I have seen him. I must see if the rumours are true and decide for myself what he is like. I do not want to rely on the words of other people. So far, most of the things I’ve heard about you have been wrong. I am glad to have not believed them and seen what you are-"
"You keep being sarcastic by calling me a hero, as it bothers you when the town says it. So you have, in fact, listened to their words, believed them, and spoken of them from time to time. It is not a title that I go around claiming to be, but I don’t see why it is wrong for me to be called a hero and why you disliked that I tried to help you with Connor," Rafael said, staring down at her as he awaited the answer.
Annalise wasn’t going to say that hearing him be called a hero for killing people like her angered her, so she replied, Well, then I am no different from everyone else when it comes to judging. I will try to do it less. Oh," she stopped to look at a man dipping an apple in something he held over a flame.
Rafael slowed down to join her in watching the treat be made. Her eyes lit up like she was seeing it for the first time. "He is dipping it in melted sugar. A good way to ruin a fruit. Would you like to try one?"
