THE Knight's Hidden Princess -
Chapter 99: Not Too Thrilled Knight
Chapter 99: Not Too Thrilled Knight
The next morning I woke up with the sunlight streaming through the flaps of our tents casting a warm golden light across the fabric. I stretched on the bed with a slight yawn and then turned to my side only see that I was the only one in the tent.
The bedroll Reagan laid on the ground had completely disappeared completely, almost like he didn’t sleep in this tent and that the apology he had muttered last night hadn’t happened.
I stared down at my hand on the bed, I could still feel the warmth of Reagan’s hand on mine as he held me throughout the night.
Truth was even though I had told him that I was fine, I actually wasn’t. The nightmare shook me to the very core and Reagan had decided to hold my hand not saying anything and just like that sleep had claimed me.
Now, I woke up with this empty feeling in my chest. Reagan just confused the fuck out of me, there were times where I can’t figure out if he hated me or cared about me!
Yesterday, I got really angry at his hot and cold behavior. One minute he is yes and no, he is in and out, sometimes he wants to stay and sometimes he wants to go, he is giving me a fucking whiplash and it just irritated the fuck out of me and so I lost it.
Okay maybe I might have been a little bit nuts yesterday when I wanted to throw a fucking watermelon at his big head but like I said, I got really angry and apparently he lost it too and then proceeded to traumatized me but he apologized for it but that doesn’t make it okay.
I was still thinking about Reagan when suddenly the tent rustled open and Heather came in carrying a bowl of water.
"Good morning my lady." She greeeted with a wry smile. "How are you feeling today."
Murderous! "Where’s Reagan?"
Heather seemed taken aback by my question because then she arched a brow up at me. "Having breakfast with his men?"
Breakfast with his men? I released a scoff in disbelief. "He tried to kill his wife and he is having breakfast with the men?"
Heather winced a little. "Well if it’s any consolation at all, he feels sorry."
"No, no, it’s no consolation!" I said as I pushed the quilt off me.
"You are awfully cranky this morning my lady." Heather observed as she stared at me.
"Having a near death experience will do that to you!" I mumbled before I stood up from the bed and began to walk away, heading towards the tent.
"My lady, perhaps you might want to rethink going outside!"
"What? You think I’m scared to face him after what happened yesterday?"
"No but it might be best to know that you are not putting on pants!"
And just like that I became aware of myself. I stared down at myself only to realize that what I was wearing was only a white linen shirt.
Fuck! I had almost stepped outside to a different place full of men in nothing but my underwear! I thought to myself before I turned to face Heather who was already passing me a pair of trousers to wear.
"Thank you." I mumbled.
Heather grinned at me, no doubt finding the whole thing amusing. "You are welcome."
Rolling my eyes at her, I hastily word the trouser and tossing my hair backwards, I walked out of the tent.
This was the first time I would get a good look of the camp ground. Tents were erected in neat lines, the camouflage patterns blending with the natural greenness, offering refuge and a sense of security. Each tent was itsown little world, with gear strewn about—backpacks, sleeping bags, and the occasional helmet on the ground. The air was thick with the pungent aroma of pine and damp ground, blended with the faint scent of smoke drifting from a fire ring.
A portable grill hissed in the background, where someone prepared rations, the smell of burnt meat wafting through the air, which made my stomach growl in hunger, a reminder that I needed to eat but right now I was on a mission. I was going to find Reagan and demand we have that talk he’s so scared to have.
Except, I couldn’t find any sign of Reagan but I found his friend, Nikolai who was happily munching away on a piece of chicken.
I decided to approach him instead and immediately Nikolai saw me, he straightened, eyeing me with a wary look in his gaze.
"Have you come to start a food fight with me because let me tell you now we are fresh out of fruits, thanks to a certain someone."
"Where’s Reagan?"
Nikolai gazed up at me with a frown on his face. "You know for a princess, you’ve got pisspoor manners!"
"Try angry and I think we know that being angry isn’t a good look for me."
Nikolai smirked at me, "Well guess we’ll just have to shove you back in the river for you to cool off!"
I blinked at that, swallowing a little bit. He had to be joking right? I thought to myself as I stared at Nikolai who stared at me with a smirk on his face. Before I knew what I was doing, I took a step backwards.
Nikolai must have seen the fear on my face before his smirk dropped and in its place was regret. "Shit, it was a joke." He said quickly, "I don’t mean it, it was a joke but I suppose it was too soon to joke about it, that was stupid of me, I’m sorry."
I stared down at Nikolai, his blue eyes were filled with worry as he stared up at me. I could see the sincerity in his gaze as he stared at me, so I offered him a nod. "It’s alright."
"For what it’s worth, I still think Reagan is an ass for pulling that dumb move on you, I gave him hell!" Nikolai responded and I couldn’t help but smile at that.
Perhaps Nikolai wasn’t so bad and I can be friends with him! "Can I sit with you?"
Nikolai tensed up at my request, his eyes scanned the camp ground before he gazed back up at me. "Um, I guess?"
"Good!" I said before I stared down at the piece of chicken in his plate.
Okay perhaps I should have waited in the tent to be well fed before stepping right outside, I’m starving! I also don’t seem to recall eating anything yesterday!
Nikolai followed my line of sight before he raised his plate towards me, "You want it?"
"Oh, but it’s your meal..."
"You are starving, aren’t you?" Nikolai cut me off, "That pissy bastard didn’t think you would wake up hungry huh?"
Mumbling a thanks, I quickly swiped a drum stick and took a hearty bite! I couldn’t help but release a loud moan at the taste that exploded in my mouth! Who knew chicken roasted on a stick in the woods would taste so good? I thought as I took in another bite.
I heard a deep chuckle behind me and I saw Nikolai looking at me with a smile on his face. "You are an usual one, aren’t you?"
"Depends on who you ask." I said with a shrug before I continued to eat.
Nikolai hummed in response, "I suppose I haven’t thanked you yet." He said looking at me, "For saving our asses!" Nikolai added when I arched a brow up at him.
"Oh you are welcome." I said with a genuine smile.
Nikolai nodded his head before he turned away. A comfortable silence settled between both of us. I continued to eat while appreciating the taste silently but Nikolai suddenly spoke.
"You know he’s not as bad as you think." He said and I turned to look at him, "And you are also pretty decent for the devil’s spawn."
Frowning, I turned to stare at him. "You really just say the first thing that pop up in your mind?"
"Yup!" Nikolai answered as he leaned backwards, "But honestly, I think you guys would make one hell of a power couple if only he can just pull his head out of his ass and you quit throwing tomatoes at him!" Nikolai said, giving me a pointed look.
I rolled my eyes at him as I reached for a cup of water. "You enjoyed the fight, didn’t you?"
"Oh definitely and I wasn’t the only one, it’s not everyday you get to see the hellhound of Iravia have his ass handed to him!" Nikolai said and I smiled into my cup already deciding that I like Nikolai.
"And what do you think you are doing?"
Nikolai and turned at the mention of the deep voice and right behind was is the hellhound of Iravia and he didn’t look too thrilled!
