Chapter 96: I Wish I Knew
Chapter 96: I Wish I Knew
REAGAN POV
She threw a fucking tomato at me!
I stayed still as the red juicy mess slid down my face, sliding onto the leather vest I was putting on and onto the floor with a soft plop.
Dahlia stood still, a basket in her hands as she glared at me her cheeks flushed red with anger. Her hands clenched into a fists as she drew in deep breath while glaring at me with so much anger and if only looks could kill, I would have been a dead man by now.
But to think she threw a tomato at me, of all things, a fucking tomato?
I slowly reached up to swipe the mess from my face, my fingers coated with pulp and seeds. Exhaling through my nose, "Did you..." I chuckled in disbelief as I stared at her, "Did you actually just..."
"Yes!" Dahlia cut me off, her voice loud over the heavy silence that had now descended on the soliders who were no doubt interested in our interaction. "I did!"
Another chuckle. "And may I ask why the fuck you would do that, wife?"
A wild emotion flashed within her green eyes. "Simply because I hate you!"
Something in my chest contracted—a cruel, unwelcome pull that I ignored. Instead, I let out a low, mirthless laugh. "Oh, sweetness," I breathed, shaking my head. "You don’t throw tomatoes at people you hate. You throw knives."
"Except it’s illegal to kill your husband, so I will settle for this instead!" Dahlia said before she reached inside the basket and pulled out a fruit, an apple.
"Alright, don’t you there_fuck!" My words ended on a growl as the red plump fruit hit me square in the face.
Okay that fucking hurts! "What the fuck is your problem?"
"Hurts doesn’t it?" Dahlia asked with a smile, "Good, you should think of how many shit I have to endure and how I feel!"
Nikolai released a low whistle from behind me. "Damn and we are sure this is a princess? Her choice of words are..."
"Choose your next words carefully!" I cast Nikolai a sideways glance to which I saw him smirk at.
"I was going to say interesting but now, you should probably watch out!"
I turned forward a little too late as she already launched her next attack, I felt another soft splat of another tomato exploding on my face. The juice dripped down my face and I closed my eyes just as I heard Nikolai burst into laughter from behind me and he wasn’t the only one, I heard a few snickers from the guys.
Sighing, I turned to look at Dahlia who looked to be still angry, practically seething with it. Heaving another sigh, I turned to face Dahlia, "I think you are really pushing it this time around, sweetness!"
"Do not fucking call me that!" Dahlia growled as she launched a fruit at me this time around, one I quickly dodged.
Dahlia went crazy after that, she began picking everything she could find in the basket and started throwing it at me, one I began to dodge. Nikolai already went to seek shelter from somewhere in the camp leaving me alone to my fate.
Dahlia wasn’t playing games. Apples, pears, even a bloody loaf of bread—everything was being used as projectiles in her fury. I dodged them one after the other, a smile tugging at my lips in spite of the chaos.
"You do know that you are wasting perfectly good food, right sweetness?" I taunted, dodging a particularly large apple.
Dahlia snarled with rage. "I told you to stop calling me that!" She growled heaving the almost empty basket down before she reached inside and picked out a watermelon with her hands.
Fuck no! "Dahlia..." I called but the evil green eyed witch just smiled at me, "Dahlia no!"
"Oh yeah!" She said with a smile before she raised the watermelon high over her head.
Just before she could throw the watermelon at me, I lunged forward immediately, closing the distance between us in one swift motion, I dodged to the left just as she threw the watermelon at me before I bent down and carried her by the waist, heaving her over my shoulder.
"What the hell do you think you are doing?" Dahlia shrieked at me.
"I warned to stop, didn’t I?" I informed her while securing her tightly around her waist.
Dahlia began to beat my back and for such a small little thing, her punch hurts. But then what do I expect from a woman who was strong enough to take down a kashkil warrior who was three times her size. I didn’t know if I wanted to kiss her or strangle her for being so reckless, but all I do know was that I was so incredibly proud of her even if I wasn’t going to admit and still think it was reckless but there was still the fact that she was trying to beat me to death with her tiny little fist.
"Gods damn it to hells woman, will you stop struggling?"
"Put me the fuck down and maybe I will!" Dahlia retorted and my response was a resounding smack on her cute round ass.
That seemed to have kept her quiet, safe for the sharp intake of breath which she drew from between her teeth. Her whole body braced against my shoulder, fingers folding into the back of my shirt.
Oh... now that was interesting.
I grinned.
"What’s wrong, sweetness?" I drawled, gripping her waist a little bit tighter. "Cat got your tongue?"
"You—" She struggled out a word, her voice a little too breathless for her own good, "Just put me down you insufferable bastard!"
I drew in a sigh, "Yeah, I think you need to cool off!" I said as I neared my destination.
"What the fuck does that mean?" Dahlia asked and then her head turned to the side and I know she could hear the rushing of the river that I now stood in front of.
"Re...Reagan?" She called and I could hear the slight tremble in her tone, "Reagan, what’s going on? What are you doing?"
Ignoring her, I tightened my grip around her waist and took a step closer to the riverbank, a smile creeping on my face.
"Reagan, don’t you dare!" She warned as I took another, "Reagan don’t you fucking dare!" She yelled again as she tried to struggle.
"Perhaps this water will cool your fiery spirit!" I said with a smile.
"Reagan, no please, I can’t swim!" She blurted out but it was already too late, I already threw her in the river.
Just before she hit the water I saw something like plain white fear on her face before she hit the river.
Was she serious? I asked as I stood at the bank of the river.
For a second, I honestly thought she was messing with me — another devious little trick to get to me.
Then she dove underwater.
And she didn’t come back up.
"Fuck," I swore under my breath, my smile gone as the water roiled where she went under.
I waited there for her to resurface with that wicked pouty mouth of hers, ready to curse me out. But the seconds dragged on too long, and the way the water settled had something cutting cold and sharp through my chest.
"Dahlia?" I called out.
Nothing.
Fuck.
"Come on Dahlia this isn’t funny!" I yelled as I scanned the surface of the water but I couldn’t get any response.
Fuck, does this mean? Oh for fuck’s sake! I cursed before I immediately dived into the water.
The cold hit me like a slap, but I plunged deeper, ignoring the cold as I swam, my legs straining against the current. My heart beat wildly in my chest as I explored the murky water, my fear clawing its way up my throat the longer I couldn’t find her and just when I was about to turn I finally saw her.
Her hair flowed wildly about her underwater, her eyes widened with panic as she thrashed against the current and if it wasn’t a dire situation, I probably would have laughed at how ridiculous she looked.
Releasing strings of muffled curses, I swam towards her, grabbing her by the waist gently before I swam upwards, taking us out to the surface.
Dahlia sucked in air, her fingers sinking into my shoulders as she hugged me around the neck, her nails sinking into my skin.
"I’ve got you," I growled, wrapping one arm around her waist and pushing us towards the riverbank.
She trembled against me, her breathing ragged and uneven, her face pressed into the crook of my neck.
Immediately I brought us both ashore, Dahlia shuffled backwards away from me breathing heavily.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?" Dahlia yelled as she held her trembling hands close to her, "I told you, I told you I couldn’t swim and yet, yet you threw me in there? You never listen to me, you never listen to me! Why don’t you ever listen to me! Why don’t you ever listen to me!" Dahlia yelled over and over till her noise attracted some people from camp.
Just like that, I watched a girl who had been brave enough to ride across the kingdom without an entourage become reduced to nothing but a hysterical mess.
Heather suddenly appeared, pushing past the soldiers gathered. "My lady!" She gasped and Dahlia turned and started wailing.
Grabbing a scarf, Heather rushed forward and used it to wrap her face before she pulled her out of the water. Shooting me a look, Heather wrapped her arms around Dahlia who was still trembling before she walked her away.
Nikolai stared at their retreating forms before he turned to stare back at me from where I still stood at the bank of the river.
"Just what the fuck is wrong with you?" He asked with a look of disbelief on his face.
I wish I knew man, I wish I did!
