THE Knight's Hidden Princess
Chapter 82: Stubborn Princess

Chapter 82: Stubborn Princess

"My lady, are you sure about this?" Heather asked me.

I stared at myself in the mirror as I nodded my head in agreement. The simple dress reached my ankles and denied any hint of nobility yet it presented me a pragmatic appearance suitable for any practical situation. Although it was unusual to put on such an unadorned outfit I felt strangely at ease wearing it. The simple outfit lacked big jewels and a restrictive corset which allowed me free breathing while absence of detailed embroidery did not burden me down. Just me, as I was.

"For the last time Heather, yes, I am sure!" I answered brushing away invincible lint from my dress, "You have no idea how long I’ve waited for this." I said with a smile.

Heather heaved out a sigh, cocking her hips out as she pointed the hair brush she was holding at me. "I know that, believe me I do but I also know that you could get into a lot of trouble for this!"

My eyes met Heather’s through the mirror, "You really need to learn how to relax Heather, come on it’s fine!"

Heather adamant as ever shook her head stubbornly as she dropped the hair brush she was holding on the vanity. "It’s not about relaxing, my lady. Sire clearly told you he doesn’t want you doing that business, if he finds out there will be consequences."

"He won’t." I assured her before I turned to look at her, "And also, since when do you get to back out of business like this? Few weeks ago, you would have begged me not to listen but now it seems all you want to do is listen to what he says."

Heather cleared her throat as she looked away from me. "Well things have been tense between you two lately, the last thing I want is for you to get into more trouble with him." She mumbled before she glanced back up at me, "Sir Reagan informed you not to do any of the black knight’s business again."

"And I am not." I answered, "I am just a princess going to see what’s going on in her beloved kingdom."

Scoffing Heather rolled her eyes, "Yeah, somehow I think that is even worse."

"Just trust me Heather, things will be okay." I assured her reaching for her hands but Heather still seemed reluctant.

Sighing, she gazed at me. "You always say that and for a while things may be but somehow they end spiraling out of control."

"That may be true but I just have a feeling this time around it will be different, you know?" I say as I squeezed her hands, "Trust me Heather, I’m not doing this to be reckless or anything, I just need to know the people are okay? I need to see things for myself!"

Heather’s gaze narrowed, "And you think you won’t get recognized? You are the princess for crying out loud and I wasn’t planning on telling you this, but the people do not love you, they hate you!"

"Hate is a strong word don’t you think?" I mumbled under my breath causing Heather to give me a look.

I wasn’t oblivious to the people’s feelings towards me. Just as they blamed my father for their misfortune, they blamed me too. Not just me though, all the noble born but the royal family share the bigger part in the hate and I couldn’t blame them for it.

"Besides, I am putting on this disguise, no one would recognize me."

Heather rolled her eyes, "Please, you might be wearing the plainest of clothing but anyone can tell with the way you carry yourself that you are not peasant born."

"Hmm, do you think smudging ashes on my face and digging my fingernails in the dirt will help?"

"My lady!" Heather called with an exasperated look on her face.

I chuckled as I stared at her, "Okay fine, fine, but I still need to do this!" I informed her, my voice turned serious as I continued, "I know it may be risky but this is the only chance that I will ever get. Reagan is away and Marina couldn’t care less about what it is I do, so I need to do this Marina, I need to know they are fine!"

Heather stared at me as if contemplating each word I said. I could see it the moment she lost the battle because she heaved out a resigned sigh. "Fine!" She hugged out a resigned sigh while I squealed in excitement.

But Heather wasn’t done yet, "Just know that the moment things goes sideways, we are coming back straight home!"

A triumphant grin spread on my face but I quickly masked it with a more somber expression, trying not to show my excitement but with the way Heather sighed and rolled her eyes at me, I knew I was failing. "Thank you Heather, I mean it!"

Heather leveled me with a pointed glare, "Just remember what I said, alright?" She said then walked off and yanked a shawl from the wardrobe which she uses to wrap my head.

Smiling, I let her do what she wanted even though I knew there was no use for a shawl but objecting would only cause Heather to fret even more and it was something I couldn’t afford.

"Alright, now we are ready!" Heather said and then with a deep breath she opened the door.

We were just about to step out when suddenly I noticed something there was a guard posted right in front of my entrance. The sight was so surprising, Heather and I immediately came to a halt.

"And who are you?" I couldn’t help but ask.

The guard, a young boy no more than sixteen, stiffened at the sound of our voice. He stared at us with a mixture of nervousness and determination.

"Eddie Grimwell my lady!" The boy said as he straightened his armor that looked too big for him, "I am your new guard as of today my lady." He said softly and I could detect a hint of uncertainty in his tone.

Heather eyed the boy up and down, her brows "New guard? Since when?" She demanded and the boy’s next word shocked me to the core.

"I was assigned here this morning by sir Reagan, under strict orders to watch my lady, protect her and then report everything to him after!" He said puffing his chest out but he soon shrank back when he met my gaze, "Although I’m pretty sure I shouldn’t have said the last part!"

"You think?" Heather threw at him but I just stood rooted to the spot feeling confused and anger at his audacity, Reagan’s audacity!
