Chapter 80: Love Is A Weakness
REAGAN POV
Two guards each flanked me by my sides, their heavy boots echoed against the marble floors of the grand hall as we made our way towards the manor’s east wing where I knew my mother was staying.
As I walked, the emotions inside me fought for supremacy with anger against regret at the same time. Every word Heather had said embedded into my mind like blades which pierced my pride to deeper and more painful depths. I couldn’t believe what I had just heard and I wasn’t willing to listen it but then everything made sense.
Dahlia looking pale, frail, almost sick! Hells, thinking about it made me sick. To think that she would go through this extent made my stomach churn. Looking at Dahlia, seeing her once bright and spirited self reduced to nothing but the shadow I had confronted earlier made me angry with myself. I couldn’t believe that I had been too blind, too consumed by my anger and bitterness to notice it!
I clenched my fists tightly as we got closer to the east wing. The distant low level of voices reached my ears and I could tell my mother was inside. The guards who stood guard at the door tensed at the sight of me coming towards them, their faces unyielding.
"Sire!" One of them greeted with a firm nod.
"Open the door!" I demanded, my voice cold and unwavering.
Without hesitation, the guards immediately did as I had asked, opening the door and I stepped inside where I found my mother seated gracefully by the window. A calm atmosphere surrounded her while her fingers delicately touched the rim of her tea cup which rested on a small nearby table. Sunlight from the window exposed her facial features making her seem heavenly if only I didn’t know any better.
Her gaze shifted to me as I entered, and a warm smile appeared on her face, her dark eyes lighting up the way they always did whenever she saw me. "Ah, my son!" She said rising up from her seat to come and huge me while giving me a peck on the cheek, something I didn’t like but she still always goes ahead and do it and I always let her since it brings her comfort.
My mother pulled away from me, a small frowning settled on her face when she saw how I gazed at her. "You look troubled son, are you okay?" She asked me her voice filled with concern.
Instead of answering my gaze flicked to the maids that were in the room with her. Four of them stood in various corners of the room, their heads bowed, hands clasped respectfully in front of them. I stared at them noticing they fit the description Heather gave, this must be the maids who had doled out the punishment.
Without any other word, I turned to my side to where I knew the guards were busy waiting. "Grab them and throw them in the dungeon."
The guards answered without any question and moved to grab the maids who were looking confused than ever and struggled when the guards grabbed them. My mother turned to look at me, her frown deepening as she stared at me.
"What is the meaning of this?" My mother asked but I gave her no explanation.
The maids struggled as they were being dragged off towards the door, their voices rising in confused protest as they called for my mother to save them but she didn’t say anything at all, instead her expression hardened as she stood rooted to the spot.
I narrowed my eyes thinking she ought to intervene with the way the maids yelled and called out for her but instead her lips pressed into a thin line, her face betraying nothing but cold indifference.
The moment the maids were out of the door, my mother turned to look at me. Anger burning in her gaze as she glared at me, "And may I ask what this is about?"
I stared at her, "May I ask why the king’s head of servant was doing in my house?"
My mother tried to conceal her emotions but I saw the way her eyes flickered with the briefest hint of surprise before she slipped back her cold mask on her face. "Nothing, she was just visiting."
A scoff escaped my lips as I stared at her mother, did she think after all these years I wouldn’t know when she was telling me lies or the truth? That I wouldn’t know her schemes? I thought to myself before I turned away, "Then you can count this as me just visiting!" I said and began to walk out of the door.
"So she told you what I did to her then?" My mother’s voice halted my movements.
"Didn’t need to, I was bound to find out sooner or later!" I was just sad that I found out about it too late to stop it! I thought to myself before I turned around to stare at my mother, "How could you do something like that to her?"
My mother scoffed at me, "Come now Reagan don’t tell me you’ve come to care for the poor girl, this was bound to happen sooner later. I just made sure she gets to have a taste of the same pain I experienced for years!" She said without any remorse.
I stared at my mother, "And you do not think you went too far with it? She could have died!"
"Wow, so you are really starting to care about her?"
"For fuck’s sake I care about you!" I yelled at her, "What do you think happens to us when the king learns that his daughter has died?"
My mother rolled her eyes, "Please, if the king truly cared about her he would have married her off to someone better. He knew what she would be getting into the moment he married her off to you!"
Clenching my hands tightly, I stared at my mother. "Whatever it may be, I’ve come to tell you to stay away from her. Do not touch her or tell any of your spawns to again!"
My mother raised her head up to stare at me with surprise on her face. "This truly bothers you?" She asked staring at me as if trying to figure me out, "Tell me the truth Reagan, do you care for the girl?"
"No!" I answered without missing a beat, "But no one gets to touch her or hurt her, if anyone will hurt her or even make her cry, it will be me and no one else. We have a plan, so I suggest you stick to it and not complicate things for me."
My mother narrowed her gaze at me, "Ohm don’t worry, I know all about the plan and I intend to stick to it but the question is will you?" She asked, her eyes searching mine for answers that I didn’t dare to reveal.
"Be careful mother or it’s not only the king you will be answering to!" I said after a while before turning on my heel and heading toward the door. My shoulders were tense, my hands curled into fists at my sides as I walked away. The sound of her voice stopped me just before I reached the threshold.
"Just remember," She called after me, her tone laced with venom, "love makes you weak. And weakness has no place in this family."
I paused for a minute, my hand hovering on the door then I turned to look at her, "Of course mother, how could I ever forget?" I asked calmly and before she could say anything else, I opened the door and stepped outside while her words lingered in the air and echoed in my mind as I walked away.
